This is a great question, that unfortunately I have no credible answers for.

I posted my first incest story here, without realizing all the popularity surrounding this genre.

I'm sure there are some authors that are motivated by scores/views, and start writing about incest even though it is not their forte, or even something that turns them on?

Really, I find many of the incest stories on this site could easily just be straight sex stories, with a quick change of names/characters. I do appreciate the incest stories that have a proper plotline, with motivations of characters that acknowledges the complexities of these kinds of relationships... but often those are far and few between.

As for why people are reading them? Maybe because its the last forbidden taboo? I have no idea... but I am always surprised by how popular they are...

Hey FD...I think at least part of the reason is that not a lot of story sites allow incest stories...I post my stuff on eleven sites and I can only think of four that actually allow incest stories...
Of those four, one is relatively new and doesn't get a lot of visits,
So, incest fans don't have a lot of places to go...
Different sites have different rules which affect the viewership...the fact that Lush allows incest stories and also has a relatively lax 16 years old and over policy can make for a popular combination...
Later,
Alan.

I agree with miss dancing_doll.
Incest is the last taboo, as far as I'm concerned. I guess I always have; , whips, an chains, anime, and many other type's of sexuall reading material. But; Incest is by far my most arousing fantasy!
Dancing_Doll wrote the most erotic,,so far, with many close seconds from this site.
I love this site( almost as much as I'd love to do my sister)

This is just a question/observation. Your stories get a lot of views and votes, substantially above the other categories.

A semantic quibble: The appeal of incest stories seems universal, not something drummed up by authors. There are many theories for this popularity, but as a writer, I've noticed one truism: The closer the relationship, the more views and votes.

I think it because inside everyone, and i mean everyone, there is a thrill of the taboo, does not have to be incest but there is that thrill of the unknown, the forbidden, the thigns that society says you shouldn't do. So people find these stories a turn on, even though if ever confronted with it they would never do it. But still, it is a turn on to them because of the fantasy the risk of such a thing.

I find incest stories fascinating because they describe something so totally outside of the realms of possibility for me. Having said that I will only read stories that involve consenting adults but I'm a romantic at heart afer all. I think that authors of incest stories have a valid and valuable contribution to make to the whole genre of erotica. They deserve our support.

I have an incest story posted on here and I was surprised at how many votes it got. I like the taboo/unknown/controversial so may the category thrive.

As I was being raised by my biological parents, they neglected engaging in specific discussions of human sexuality with me. They seemed, (as I recalled later) to desire allowing their children to learn of sexual intricacies from our peers.

I received some very general instructions from them, from my maternal grandparents and from one aunt, my Mother's younger sister. Things like this: "You and your cousin Sharon, put your swimming clothes on, in different rooms, starting today!" Or, "Your cousin received a doll, you received a bb gun...boys and girls are different, just take our word for it." Very scant references to sexuality were ever uttered.

I was quite ignorant as to what other children were referencing as 'The Birds and The Bees'. I remember now, that for a long time, I thought my friends were making shit up - and they may well have been. Perhaps their parents too, avoided discussions with them, and what my peers were yakking about, were rumors they had heard from older cousins or siblings?

The older I aged, the more I realized that my parents thought the topic was apparently too uncomfortable to them, to discuss with their own children, so...by their own inaction or personal levels of discomfort, their avoidance created a taboo situation for myself and my younger brothers.

I have no idea what form of conversation may have occurred between my parents, concerning the topic of sex education for their children. I have no clues to this day, as I've never directly asked either of them to fill me in on what they were or were not thinking.

"Did you speak to your son(s) about, you know...that?"

"Of course I did, don't worry about it, honey."

Who the fuck knows what was said, I sure as hell don't.

I never asked my Father nor my Mother about anything concerning sex.

Neither of them ever took me off to a corner of a room, or out to an Uncle's farm for the visual tour and explanation of animal behavior while overlooking the cattle lot. I never saw puppy's nor kitten's actually being born.

They just magically appeared suckling upon the momma cat or the pointer bitch, the next morning when I woke up and inspected the animal in question.

I did see dogs fornicating on occasion, but in my innocence, at the time...I can only recall thinking: "What in the hell are those dogs, doing to one another?"

There were a few National Geographic-type television shows during the 1970's which my parents allowed me to watch, which dealt 'the mysteries of life', etc... I suppose they thought their son was comprehending everything 100%. And in that era of television, there was absolutely zero actual information disclosed on the air. The FCC had rules they enforced with extreme vigor, back then.

Personally speaking, and this is probably a direct reflection upon the naiveté of my upbringing, I never cared enough to ask about sexual matters until my seventeenth year on this planet. By which time, it was nearly too fucking late, to absorb what I was being told by older boys/younger men, to me. What I learned was what I read in books by Desmond Morris, obtained not at the high school library (god forbid!) but found in the bookshelves of my own parent's home.

Because my parents studiously avoided doing so, I avoided broaching the subject with them. Ignorance contributed greatly to the situation.

I only remember being told, before I entered my teen years, "Boys and girls don't take baths nor showers together!"

That was the extent of my Birds-and-the-Bees discussion. How whack...is that?

And to further explain...I grew up in a very rural area of the middle of America, during the 1960's and 1970's. I went to an extremely small, population-wise, grade school and then high school.

I, and 300 other children, over a 50 square mile are, were very sheltered. Three channels of television - maybe - on a good day. No FM stereo radio to speak of, until 1976. The Vietnam war wasn't even discussed in-depth, as the ramifications of it raging on, implied that the older boys of that generations area, might be sucked into it. That was the main concern for most parents in that day and age.

Vietnam was the pornography which my parents feared the most.

Sex occurring between their offspring or nieces and nephews? Not even a concern, they could control that.

I write about incest because I like it and want to tell the stories. You would be surprised at just how many incest authors are telling their own personal story, just changing the names, just like mine. I personally see nothing wrong with an incestuous relationship, as long as there is no force of any kind and the participants are of legal consenting age.

Incest is one of the most popularly read and written genres.

Incest is one of the last taboos there is. It is society that made it unacceptable, but it exists and thrives world wide. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if a lot of people right here on lush are friends with somebody involved, but they will never, ever admit it or let it be known due to the stigma.

If you actually stop and really look at incest stories, just think for a minute... and remove the "relationship" status and anything that would point to a close relationship, like brother/sister...etc... and you have a regular erotic story, just like others written here on lush.

Also, just to give a little more credibility to the validity of the incest genre...

Incestuous relationships were really idealized by the Romantic Poets (especially the sibling relationship) and featured quite prominently as the focus of many of the poems that are now part of the "Great Canon of Literature". Two examples are Lord Byron's Manfred (1817) and Shelley's Laon and Cythna (1818)

After Freud came along, and started talking about incestuous desires and repressions, it started to factor into Victorian society as well.

In more recent decades, one very famous author, VC Andrews, wrote many series of novels aimed at the teenage market that explored every kind of incest possible. Before the Twilight generation, this was what your kids were reading and passing around in the classroom! After her death, the ghost-writer continued on in her tradition and built a virtual literary empire based on incestuous novels for teenage consumption! Everyone read VC Andrews.. trust me... it was like part of a 'coming of age rite' once you turned 13... LOL

It's nothing new and its certainly found its place as a literary genre (outside of erotic) that spans back many centuries...

Incest is as old as the human race.

Quite possibly the oldest form of sexual relations, on the planet.

Literally, figuratively, and as a matter of species perpetuity.

I have to agree with schzae_dayvow, Piquet and cpcrlsean, the idea of incest is so taboo it is fun to read and write about. For me, it opens up a whole new fantasy world which has never been explored. I guess some are writing about their own experiences and others may write about their inner most desires. I write purely fictional stories from imagination.

Speaking of the cuff here, incestuous relationships were quite popular hundreds of years ago. It was once believed that royalty shall not mix with the peasants, therefore, continuing the bloodline within the family to ensure its purity. There are lots of rumors on why incest is good or bad, and whatever you believe is entirely up to you, but I believe it comes down to genetics. The royal families eventually had to branch out due to dominant genes, some good and some bad, taking over the blood lines. In regards to IQ level, this is good. In regards to a medicinal issues, this is bad (or could be). Having never experience incest myself, and not having the opportunity, it is interesting to me. In a lustful way it grabs my attentions, but also curiosity of the mental challenges it carries. I dont think many people consider that when thinking of incest or reading a story regarding it. Most guys think "oh sure I'll have sex with my sister". But, think about the weight that act carries? It's quite difficult from what I've read just in the stories posted here on LUSH. Nonetheless, incest is desired by many, but few think about what happens afterwords and the situations the brother/sister, mother/son, father/daughter, etc...must endure. In my own opinion, its intriguing and sexy, yet very complicated.

I have published stories in the Incest category, but I am not actually interested in Incest. What I DO find funny is that there is a huge intersection (pun intended) between incest stories and stories that involve well-endowed men and women (which IS my interest.)

I have a few theories about why that may be, but I won't bore you all with them here.

I think Incest is the most popular because it is the most taboo thing we eroticise that does not neccesarily involve non-consent. The only things more Taboo than incest, Bestiality, Rape, and Necrophillia all involve some element of non-consent (or no possible consent) between participants.

Is that right? One learns something everyday.
Maybe it is because Lush is not seen as a BDSM site. Incest seems to be, as it as been already put, the last taboo. I would add to that the last taboo in the" vanilla lifestyle". In the chocolate BDSM world incest is seen as rather tame.

My belief is that many more people have experianced some form of incest than is generally known. These things tend to be the deepest of family secrets, so secret that even other family members don't know about it, and I am speaking from experiance here. I envy a woman like doll that has been able to be open about her experiances and has had the chance to come to terms with it. Anyway, I think it's that hidden desire to try it or to do it again that drives the subject.

Non-BDSM - vanilla, sweet, sometimes cloying, predictable.
BDSM - chocolate, rich, warm, surpising, addictive

I agree with everything that has been said. I will say the strongest drive is the taboo. I guess if it sells, keep repeating it!

Its my personal belief that it is, as others have said, the thrill of the forbidden. Its like (forgive the AWFUL example) when a child is told that they have to clean their room or else they can't go to the amusement park, well maybe the child really doesn't want to clean, and they will test their parents by doing the forbidden and most of the time still getting to do what they want. Just out of the desire to not follow rules or utter laziness.
Incest is something that our society today perceives as disgusting, wrong, horrid. And the fact that the two people, or more, involved in the relationship are choosing to behave as they wish above society and really, metaphorically, shooting 'society' the bird.
When I wrote my story, it was originally because I just wanted to write it. I couldn't find a story on here that truly satisfied my wants for the genre of story, basically more hand in hand with love story/sex (because I'm sappy!), so I wrote one myself. I think I worked on it for a night and then reread it in the morning, submitted it that morning, had it become approved that day, and had over 1,600 views by the time I went to bed. I was absolutely amazed.
I think that the public is secretly fascinated by the subject of incest. That it mentally compels them, arouses them in a different way, just of how completely frowned upon it is. I, personally, am not attracted to any of my family members in that way, but I am hooked on just the idea of incest, of just how raw, and primal it is, in itself.
You can't afford me.

I must answer these questions with more questions.

Is this incest something which is fun to do? I do not know, for I have no siblings and my father is not of this country. My mother would not be up for this, nor would I, I do not think. Although I have fantasized about sexing up my sister, if I had one. Would that not be something?

I write, and indeed read, a lot of Incest stories on Lush, specifically Daddy/Daughter stories... I've never been married, have no children and had a normal relationship with my own parents.

The appeal of incest stories for me, is that you can incorporate several aspects of erotica that have wide appeal. The thrill of the forbidden, an element of reluctance, (from the guilty poppa or the curious but bad-behaving daughter), a genuine element of love, (albeit a forbidden love), the Older Man/Younger Woman scenario, the guilt thing which most of us were brought up with-"Sex is Dirty And Bad" (which it is if you do it right!!!), a faintly masochistic element, an exploration of corruption, an ability to explore taboos that normal life (and most people's moral compass) wouldn't allow them to explore in real life...

I abhor incest in real life. I've only ever come across it once, a friend of mine was repeatedly by her father for many years and it caused her terrible problems... HOWEVER, I can't deny that in the WHOLLY FANTASTICAL REALM in which I write and read these stories are allowing myself and other readers to explore dark corners of a sexual physche that exists in the minds of many....

I have several friends with very young daughters... Every one of them has said at some point that they DREAD the sexual awakening of their daughters and have no idea how they'll react when their little girls eventually bring home a boy with whom the may have an intimate relationship...

This is my response to a question I find both interesting and stimulating. Others will of course have other opinions...

Most of my stories ARE incest, from first through the fifth or so, and I never realized how much attention the genre got until I posted a story that wasn't incestuous. Personally, I like incest for the bond-- how much more love can you for someone who you grew up with or raised? Not only that, but I'd be so comfortable with them, and that's sort of a key component in sex, being comfortable enough to be with them. There's probably readers out there like that.

Another angle would be the taboo. If it isn't either of those two, I have no fucking clue of why it's such a huge genre.

I really enjoyed the posts in this thread, and the variety of points of view. I think the attraction to incest comes from early childhood experiences, long before puberty. I remember listening to my parents make love. Mother was very, let's say, "vocal". I didn't understand what I heard, and didn't think about it much. I never fantasized about my mother. But in my 20s, I had a GF who wanted to roll-play that we were mother/son. As we did, I suddenly remembered those mental audio recordings of mother moaning and wailing in the dark. It was an erotic shock.
Really good incest erotica rarely involves one-nigh-stands or couples who barely know each other. Their familial relationship is almost always deep, close, and temporally extends to the birth of at least one of the partners. By the time you are 16, you know your parents VERY well, and even if unconsciously, you know they have seen you naked, have bathed you, have changed your diapers. Your siblings have either been with you since your birth, or you were there for their birth. Perhaps you changed their diapers, with nary a naughty thought at all. But at some stage, your soul knows that you once shared nakedness and innocent intimacies. Most folks suppress and forget. We few, we lucky few, unlock the gates of memory and revel in the sexual shock and release.
You've been a bad girl! Now take your pajamas off and go to my room!

I agree that a lot of people seem to be interested in the subject due to the fact that it is probably the one great taboo that most sites allow, so people are curious. Beyond the curosity factor the appeal has to come from other areas, such as genuine interest, how well the story is written, and actual experience in the subject which the reader would like to relive through the relation of someone else's story.

Wheter acted upon or not I think that incest thoughts are natural, as we develop our first attatchments are to the people closest to us, our own family members. I do not believe it is appropriate for the adult to approach the child when they are in their adolecent years. The argument had been made that there is no such thing as consensual incest, but I would have to disagree. I believe that it does happen, and probably more than most people think, because as one of those great taboos it is nothing people are going to talk to thier friends and co-workers about.

When I was in my late teens I still had fantasies about my mother, and even occasionally later on, deep into my first marriage I had a few erotic dreams about her.

As for real experience I had an extended, on again/off again, affair with a cousin. We were only related by marriage, but the idea we were doing something the rest of the family would consider so wrong made the sex seem that much hotter.

As for writing I have a short story that skirts a little on the subject, and a poem about mother/son incest posted. I do have several ideas for other stories where the subject is at the forefront, but I just have not gotten around to wrtiing any of them down.

As a preference I would have to say that it is one of those different strokes for different folks subjects. I have noticed though that there seems to be a broad appeal for such stories, here at lush and on other sites as well.
