I have never used another woman's toys myself, even as a teenager. With that being said, I can understand some women wanting their toys only for themselves, because sex toys by their nature are very personal possessions. I, however, am a bit disappointed by the number of fellow women who think it's gross to share them because it's unsanitary. As long as you clean them with an alcohol based toy cleaner or a mild detergent, you shouldn't be concerned at all with sharing your toys (especially with a lover) over sanitary reasons. I agree. Like I already said, when I was a teen me and my best friend took her moms dildo and tried it. I was merely suggesting that I didn't like the underlying implied connotation that toys should not be shared because of sanitary reasons as long as they're cleaned after use. Maybe I took it the wrong way but when someone says "ewww that is gross", because that is how I would interpret that. I'm not dispelling the fact they're personal items, because they are indeed VERY personal. I know the OP mentioned roomie or friend as far as using others' toys. For that matter, I won't be sharing my toys with anyone who i'm not intimate with. As crazydiamond said, to each his own. We all have the free will to do as we wish, and then either reap the rewards or consequences of our actions.

In the scenario set out by the original question I would have to go through her personal belongings without her knowledge or consent to find her toys in the first place, I would then be using her toys under the same circumstances.
