How come I'm the only one who had to google 'degaustation'?

You're not. Sounds awesome, too. Well except for the maggot. That sucks.

Complain if in a restaurant or if at home.

Unless the use of maggots in soup is one of the chef's specialties, this is an incident born of carelessness. I have been in food service for over 30 years, and am known as a bit of a food sanitation nazi. Pest control practices and care in plating food would prevent this. I would be gagging and unable to continue the meal.

If the owner would have said that to me I would have walked into the dining room, stood up on a chair and said

" Excuse me, Forgive me for interupting your dinner but I found a bug in my soup, and when I politely brought it to the attention of the reataurant owner, he said these things happen and shrugged it off as it was no big deal. Now is this the type of place you want to eat"

And then I would have left without paying!! And if the owner said anything to me I would have replied, "these things happen!"

WOW Nicky ... You would have really done that?

For a smile: at less than $40 per head on a 10 courses dinner, finding a maggot it’s not so bad… I mean c’mon you wanted to find a range free chicken leg in there?

Yes, things happen at home as in a restaurant, but (not lessening the problem) with a hair or a fly which it could happen even at the moment that the plate is laid on the table, I feel that it’s an awful accident. It didn’t just happen with a maggot. Now we have a well-established problem and if it sounds like a duck it is a duck. The kitchen (to remain in culinary words Ha Ha) might have many other kind of ducks. I do not want to hear that it could have come from a vendor.

Regarding "These things happen" comment in Nicola case, I feel that's not acceptable and also rude, yeah the photo of the Nazi cook is fine. They have just killed the two fundamental rules.
1 customer is always right.
2 if customer is ever wrong read rule 1.

Something similar happened to me a few months ago. A server laid my plate and immediately she eyed a long hair in it. I didn’t need to say anything as I watched her reaction and also because the problem had been recognized. That was no need of a scene and thinking that she would just pick up the plate and bring it back to the kitchen. However this was her reaction: Are you OK with that? Exact words. No, you're NOT reading a joke.

I had to answer that I wasn’t OK. That however ended up not to be an indication of how the restaurant conduct itself. After she brought it back, someone also came out, heart fully apologized and brought another plate and later insisted on not bringing the whole check. I was stunned and I felt bad as I wanted to pay at least for the rest.

p.s. I must add, that usually I do not complain much as I have seen what can go on when food is returned to the kitchen.
