One Tumblr user wrote: "Dear Yahoo, Please don’t turn this safe haven into a data mine. Our thoughts are not for sale. We came here because we didn’t want to be found. It was safe here. We could be ourselves. It was the last corner of the internet we could truly call our own. Purchasing this site will kill the core of what it is: the last remaining trace of humanity on the web. If you buy this site, we will leave and find somewhere else to start again. We are not for sale. We cannot be bought."

The next myspace.com failure?

If they try and change it / clean it up, there's going to be all hell break loose. If they don't change it, I can't see the value in it for them, other than for the sake of owning such a "cool" domain in their stable.

I can't see them being happy with that, can you?

No. I can't. This is gonna suck so much. Maybe not right away. It's gonna start small, and then it's all gonna snowball from there. It's only a matter of time.

This headline says everything you need to know about Yahoo, and more importantly, illustrates what Yahoo knows about itself:

Yahoo on Tumblr Acquisition Deal: 'We won't screw it up."

This is what it's come to for Yahoo, your grandmother's email and search engine provider. They know that we all know theyr'e in the straw-grasping business lately, so when they finally buy something of value and relevance, they immediately go into pre-emptive damage control, because they have to.

It speaks volumes that Yahoo didn't have a Tumblr of their own until they fucking bought the interface, yet nobody should be surprised by that fact. And yes, they'll ruin it, because they have the reverse midas touch, with a trail of carcasses to show for it. So enjoy Tumblr while it exists in its current form. Soon it will be bombarded with ads, merged into some half-assed social networking scheme, censored heavily, and eventually die a slow death. And the funny thing is, the demise will be completely unforeseen by its owner/perps when it happens.

The good news is, there's plenty of minds out there inventing the next outpost on the frontier. Tomorrow's Tumblr is just getting its legs under it out there, somewhere.

I noticed today that Flickr has changed totally and a terabyte of free storage given to all. They say the Tumblr won't be changed but I will wait and see on this.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Goodbye Tumblr.

I agree with LadyX.

They've been screwing everything up they've touched for the last decade. Their search engine has been powered by Bing for the last few years, they aren't even using their own search technology anymore.

I'm amazed they haven't gone under already.

Coming soon to tumblr...

Well if they do try and clean it up they'll find they paid a lot of money for very little. If I was in charge of Yahoo! the only change I'd make is to somehow hi-jack the revenue people are making driving traffic to adult websites - it's the only way I can see the place being seriously monetised.

Flickr wasn't going anywhere when they bought that - anyone who could, already owned their DSLR and thought they were a photographer but then the web showed us what it really wanted for photos and gave us instagram. The internet being what it is, if Tumblr does go tits up, it won't be long until something newer and better comes along.

Yahoo! always seem like they've missed the boat but thanks to Pipes I can forgive them quite a bit - I can't imagine how much extra work I'd have had to do over the last decade without that piece of kit.

Warning: The opinions above are those of an anonymous individual on the internet. They are opinions, unless they're facts. They may be ill-informed, out of touch with reality or just plain stupid. They may contain traces of irony. If reading these opinions causes you to be become outraged or you start displaying the symptoms of outrage, stop reading them immediately. If symptoms persist, consult a psychiatrist.

Why not read some stories instead

I just hope they don't go all "Disney" on Me and make Me close down My tumblr blogs - I'll be PISSED! But we'll see. I wrote them today to try and get a straight answer on this...waiting to see what they say.

The old "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" phrase is one Yahoo have not heard. I read somewhere only a few days ago that 'Tumblr' is going to crack down on the porn images uploaded. I think it was on a Tumblr post for reblog so may not be accurate at all however the timing seems apt. The Yahoo purchase would have been well and truly a done deal by the time I saw that post. I'm not sure how they would police the type of pics posted though, there are so many uploaded each day. Personally I'm going to start saving my most treasured pics.

I read somewhere(think it was Wall Street Journal or something) that Yahoo had a new CEO that was now a purchase spree in an attempt to make the revenue go up for once. Apparantly she was a bit more sensible than previous ones, since she saw what was a necessity to make money. I don't use it that much, but I do believe that there might be "hope in a hanging snore" in this matter.

Ok I heard back from the tumblr staff. Here is the conversation:

Master Jonathan:
I have heard the news and I saw what you wrote about it on My Dashboard. But your post didn't really answer My most important question. I have a couple adult-orientated sites - one with pictures and one for My erotic stories. Are they going to be allowed to continue or are you guys going to go "Disney" on Me and disallow sites like that. I know that tumblr has a LOT of adult or NSFW blogs - are they going to disappear?
I have in the past had a lot of other websites - personal ones, photo/travel ones, and other types and they have all been shut down because the company was bought out (Yahoo bought out Geocities and messed My site up before) or because they just didn't want to play anymore. I would like a straight answer to whether or not tumblr is going to keep allowing adult blogs. Thank you.

Hello, Thanks for taking the time to write in about Tumblr joining Yahoo -- we'll definitely share your thoughts (and that of the rest of the community) with our team.
We're excited about what the future holds, and though we're still working out the specifics, you can be sure the Tumblr we all love is here to stay. We hope the recent Staff blog post can answer some of your questions in the meantime:

Yahoo was great when the internet was just starting out. It's kind of like AOL. AOL was the training wheels of the internet at the time. Eventually, the training wheels come off. I'm not happy about Yahoo buying out Tumblr and I have a bad feeling about its future. I hope I'm wrong for Tumblr's sake.

In custody.

Yahoo will destroy Tumblr or lose their ass financially on the acquisition.

If I ever buy an internet stock it is with the sole purpose to turnaround and sell quickly (hopefully at an inflated value.)

Bet I could steal him away for a slightly used R2 unit and a vader helmet.

But $50m is small change next to the opportunity being opened up here. The death of myspace didn't end the availability of easy to use home page sites, it just gave rise to userland, blogger and clones and when those went crappy they turned int Wordpress and then we had Facebook.

People buy these Web properties thinking they are a money making machine like a record label churning out hit band after hit band. What they actually have is a hit band and most times a one hit wonder.

You are totally right on that one Byron. That's why I see those stocks in such a temporary light. Buy those stocks cheap when you first notice they are going to move up, and be patient, but not too patient. Unload them when the price is high. Then you've made a tidy profit and got out before you have to eat a big loss.

Yeah, if only I had put $1000 in bitcoin when they were $0.02 each.

Would have made $5 million at current prices.

Of course when bitcoins were $0.02 each there weren't enough to buy $1000 worth.

So, with the impending yahoo takeover, I have been taking the precaution of backing up my archive, to where yet, I do not know. It looks like Mayer is smart enough to know that Tumblr is about 1/2 adult content - but I have to admit I would be pretty bummed if ads started popping up everywhere.

But it looks like the rumors that Yahoo would be banning adult content is false. For now at least.

I felt bereft when I heard the rumors, betrayed when I saw the news. Now I feel like abandoning the place, but I met so many great people via the tag-system that I'm hesitant. Yahoo, I know your number and you'll lose me if you piss me off.

I still don't forgive Yahoo for what it did to Delicious. They turned what used to be one of the best free social bookmarking services on the 'Net into a major clusterfuck. To make matters worse, the users told Delicious time and time again what would work and what wouldn't. We told them on facebook, we told them on twitter, we told them on Delicious, we told them on Youtube, and yet they still ignored every damn one of us despite how consistent our suggestions were and decided to "upgrade" it anyway.

I had thousands of well organized bookmarks on that site. After Yahoo took it over everything became a right mess and after a few weeks I gave up trying. I haven't used Delicious since.

I'd really hate to see the same thing happen to Tumblr.
