I would imagine a lot do. It's just so easy, and for so many people, such a strong fantasy to have sex in the work place

In my humble opinion, an affair starting at work is called "career suicide".

I have worked very hard for my career and would never jeopardize it for a fuck.

BUT .... I did met a long-term partner through work, and I quit my job so that there was no conflict of interest.

I tend to say yes, for the simple fact that these are the people you see every day; but, it depends on the industry, too ...
When I worked in aerospace, fraternization between co-workers was strongly discouraged due to the classified nature of a lot of what we were working on, so any affairs that did develop were kept strictly secret
When I was building motor homes, things were much more relaxed and you'd hear about somebody getting caught in the back lot around once a month or so
In nursing homes, there is a lot more smouldering/fringe benefits going on than people think

There seems to be a difference in how affairs/sex with work colleagues affects people from US/Canada, than it does with the UK. In the UK, in my experience anyway, it doesnt affect your career one bit. Why should it? As long as you're not shagging on the photo-copier its not really anyones business what you get up to outside of work. There can be an atmosphere if the relationship goes pear-shaped, but thats about it.

Oh most definitely. There are so many couples where I work that met each other on the job. Some work in the same department while others work throughout the industry in other areas. My current girlfriend and I met while she was doing an internship in my department. I'm sure most of those started off as affairs.

Nothing has happened here that I know about but I'm perpetually reading news articles that suggest work is a common place to start one. I'd be leery of it myself. We're a small operation (20 or so people in my office) and all know each other pretty well so it would be hard to hide, esp. if you were sneaking out for "nooners" or something.

I don't know if it is most but I think a fair amount do start at work. The odds just increase because they are people you spend a good part of the day with. They could also be people you come into contact with through work, like clients for example.

I think we should all try to change this trend by making most affairs start on Lush.

The ones I had were a result of my job, that said it was when I worked in the grocery store. It had to be the easiest place to gain a woman's interest. Most were customers although some were co-workers. Never needed the bar scene.

What does eating you own shit have to do with a work affair?

I think a lot do - but I'm swayed into saying I think more affairs start over the Internet these days.

This phrase means "do not have romantic relationships with any co-workers." Basically, you don't want to make yourself uncomfortable (by potentially having a romantic relationship get ugly, or "shitting") at the place where you work ("where you eat").

Highly likely but not only in the work place but the social scene too. Familiarity, regularity and opportunity and most probably a healthy dose of fantasy. Someone will always want more than what the other can provide starts off with no strings attached and hello your in tangled web! d'oh!

Thanks for the simple explanation.

I have actually been intimate with a co-worker and it hasn't had anything to do with shit (thankfully). I am pretty sure if either she or I tried shitting in the breakroom or anywhere else in the building, we would have been escorted out very quickly........

I imagine some affairs start at work. But I was always told don't shit where you eat. It is just a funny group of words.

I would also imagine if the affair did not work out, it would be hard to work there.

Everybody might know your business. Not something I have ever wanted to get involved with.

It does. At the non-profit I worked at, it was obvious who were dating and smashing behind closed doors. I was unfortunate enough to have a front-row seat to one, thanks to my roommate and her boyfriend. Lucky for me, I bought earplugs so I wouldn't have to hear anything.

IMHO, Work affairs are bad, the affair may end, but you still need a job and have to work there.
Something I would never do, had many opportunities, but turned them all down.

I think to answer this question properly it has to be defined which meaning of 'affair' we're using. That is if we are using it in the illicit relationship definition or not. If not I think people meet each other in a variety of social situations. However I think it would be a fair generalisation to say that most illicit affairs do start at work. People spend a great deal of time at work therefore the likelihood of something being sparked off increases accordingly. This may as some posts above have noted be different culturally speaking. In my experience in the UK one of the mainstays of conversation at work is what affairs are going on, here in the Czech Republic I have encountered a very relaxed and matter of fact attitude to all sexual situations whereas in the UK although people at work had numerous affairs they were discussed in an enjoyable scandalous way. I've only visited the US so have no experience in a working environment but would be interested in finding out. Perhaps I could be - what do they call it - ''a wet back''? That would be fun.

Good cultural joke here the above sentence is a UK expression for having sex. So the mind boggles as to what was happening. :)

I meet my fuck buddy through work, of course I have had a few looks and comments from various co-workers. In a way saying "I know you are doing something more then friends."

It doesn't help when his kids have asked me to come over in front of other workers.

Daria - I don't think that's how you spell "uvula."

Axl - That's not "uvula."

Sometimes they do but sometimes not. I wonder how many started on these forums.
