Doll suggested it, and so...

if it's not Kanye, who IS the biggest Rock Star on the Planet? feel free to include anyone that YOU consider a Rock Star - use your own definition, but dammit, defend it,

and yeah, Hip Hop is legit,
don't be hatin' on it
all you mother freaking rockers
you gawkers and you mockers
give my roots a break
this is the real deal ain't no fake
proved it's not a fad
and now you're just making us mad
Hell, DMC and PE in the Hall
of Fame now, so y'all
better welcome us with welcome arms
cause we ain't gonna stay on the farm
we up here in your face
part of the human race
only doing it with love
it's just a gentle shove
so people, come unite
and tell me who is right
is Kanye West the shit?
or is he just full of it
is Jimmy Page a god?
or just another fraud
(notice i'm not sayin what i'm feelin'
that Led Zepplin did some stealin'
from the brothers playing blues
that's just between me and yous).

and yeah, this girl can battle, yo!

There are no rock stars anymore. The rock star died out in the 90s. The last real one was Kurt Cobain. They can try and try but...no the rock star is dead. For many many reasons.

I read some of the responses in that Kanye West thread, and I agree that the term 'Rock Star' doesn't have the same connotation today than it had 20-50 years ago. Back then (especially in the 60-70's), rock was by far the prevalent musical style, so the term 'Rock Star' also implied that this person was one of the biggest figure in the world of music (or in the whole entertainment/artistic domain for that matter).

Take a look at this list, and you'll realize (if you haven't already) that the majority of the biggest rock stars were people from the 60-70's :

http://rateyourmusic.com/list/eddythefan/100_greatest_rock_stars/

Today, it's basically the opposite. Rock is becoming less and less popular, and the most popular artists are mostly related to pop and hip hop. But the term 'Rock Star' still remains to qualify the top-selling artists and their overall status. Basically it should be replaced by a term like 'Music Star', but the term 'Rock Star' is already deeply implemented in our modern cultural subconscious and holds this 'fuck yeah' connotation that puts emphasis on the power/dominance/status of these people.

Just look at the biggest selling albums of 2013 so far, and you'll notice that almost none of them is related to rock :

http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/the-official-top-40-biggest-selling-albums-of-2013-so-far-2519/

So it all comes down to defining 'Rock Star' by its classic definition or by its modern one.

In the classic sense, my choice would be Bono/U2. It don't particularly enjoy that band, but I can't really deny their status/dominance in the rock genre since the last 30 years or so. They've got quite a musical history and are still highly active/prominent internationally even today.

In the modern sense, I don't honestly give a fuck. Seriously, I couldn't even recognize Kanye West, Miley Cyrus or Taylor Swift if they walked by me on the street. I'm just not interested in that kind of music in any way.

This will be another debate for another time, but my personal opinion is that the majority of music artists are sadly becoming less and less talented and inspired today. Either the music is all about image and digital looping recorders, or in the rare instances it features real instruments, the talent/dedication is very basic and limited. Nowadays, the music industry (why the fuck is it an industry anyway?) is promoting empty images and cheap thrills at the expense of genuine human expression and cultural significance (unless you consider modern music as an expression of the lack of substance in today's culture).

Now that was real human expression. And quite inspiring too... much more so than watching a guy push a 'play' button and goof around with a 'tone' knob :

I would argue the case that Ozzy Osbourne is the biggest living rock star on the planet. He is still producing music, although not the same level as before, its definately rock, and I think everyone knows who he is.

Metallica is a potential runner up, but although I would argue less people would know who Lars Ulrich, or James Hettfield are.

Dave Grohl gets my vote! My defense is that he IS Dave Grohl.

Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures, his work with QOTSA...and the list goes on.

Also, I would really like to do him! evil4 (Yes, I will share with Mazz and Nikki)

It won a potato. Aren't you intrigued?

Mmmm glad you're sharing a little of that DG action there, CG - very magnanimous of you!

He is widely regarded as being one of the nicest guys in rock and a bloody, thoroughly nice bloke...

The fact that he is super talented and sexy as fuck doesn't do any harm either...

OK, since we are talking the biggest living Rock Star, not who I think is best or my favorite or most talented or who I want to fuck, I would have to say without a shadow of a doubt in my mind it's Bono.

U2 is one of the rare bands that is accepted in most cultures and by lovers of most music genres. Not to mention how he is revered for his humanitarian work.

So for me its definitely Bono, and I dont think ot is close!

RAP BATTLE!

I'm a lady, see, I ain't from the hood,
But I've done some things that no sweet, good girl should.

I can rap, I can tap, I can salsa too,
Scrape the competition off the heel of my new Jimmy Choo.

On my wall might hang a classic Botticelli,
But you can bet your ass I'm straight up Machiavelli.

Don't need no backing track, just me, I'm acapella.
I throw down rhymes, make me rich like J. D. Rockefeller.

You think you're all that, but your just talking smack,
Some of your lines are flat, kindergarten pre-school whack.

If you think you can top this, then you're delirious,
You wanna think about that, I'm deadly serious.

I'm rapping fresh, layin' lead, every line is brand new,
If you step up to the plate, then girl you don't have a clue.

Skills like these they don't come easy, they've gotta be earned.
Pack up your shit, walk away, or you're gonna get burned.

Time to turn back yo, the sign reads 'Danger Ahead',
I'm in control, rising up, I've taken over this thread.

I'm Lizzy Red but when I finish I'll be Lizzy Black,
If it's on, miss Sprite, man up and hit me back.

Ooosh!

For me living it has to be Jimmy Page.....The man is a god! I once not only heard him play "Stairway" in a local pub, but bought him a double JD for which he just nodded his head in recognition. I thought myself a quite cool guy at the time, but that bloke is a master.

The Black Keys and Jack White are pretty hot tickets in this era. I recently saw the Black Keys play in front of 75,000 people.

Its on...

Oaktown sistah in the house bringing it to you with extreme prejudice
Laying it on you, not with a fist, just a list, sealed with a kiss
Respect, little girl, but yeah, so out of your league
Trying to trade rhymes with a girl who knows how to fig
So let’s get it started, let’s do this warrior dance, gonna beat you like King
By the way, that's Martin Luthor, in case you were wondering
Not Rodney, Make you see stars with my words and my wit and my voice
Yeah, even gonna stand up and give you a choice
To back down now, for I lay down my rap like a demon
Spewing out rhymes like Lushies spew semen
So now, let’s get down to business, let’s get real
Cause MC Sprite’s gonna prove she’s the real deal;

Ain’t much you can do to haze me
Cause girl, doncha know I’m a little bit crazy
And even Doctor Dre and Jay-Z
Fall down to their knees and praise me
And yeah, my words they are untouchable
I throw them down like double dutch, you know
Skipping through the urban dictionary, playing pictionary
Drawing you a middle finger, not a ringer, just a girl who can toss a zinger
And flatten you down on your ass so fast you don’t even have time to pass gas
So yeah, war of words, I’m a nuclear holocaust
Might as well back out cause you already lost
My pen is my hammer, don’t stutter or stammer
cause I’m coming at you til I end up in the slammer
I’ll make you eat every word, face down in the dirt
Gonna put you in a world of entymological hurt
Come at me in English, Swedish or French
I’ll deconstruct it with a pipe and a wrench
Yeah, bring it Ms Jones, but to me it’s all bluster
Only warning you once, watch out for the bus, dear

:)

Pick just one? Jeeeeee-zuz, that's a tough call. For the modern day, and I know I'm carbon dating myself by stating it, I'd go with Bono for the reasons others have stated above. For pre-modern, for lack of a better term, I'll say it's a tie between the guitar god Jimi's, Page and Hendrix.

If you haven't seen it already there's a youtube series of President's Ball concerts (induction ceremonies?) that those reading this thread may find interesting. I stumbled upon them at the start of an evening last winter and was quickly sucked into the depths of a youtube vortex. I was never much of a Zep fan but after seeing the cover performances and a few associated interviews my appreciation for their talent and influence increased.

Oh it's on, blonde girl, you've got that right, no doubt,
Prize fight time, cameras rolling, the world heavyweight bout.

Give it up, you ain't no match for my lyrical guns,
You're just stood, lookin' pretty, busy flappin' your gums.

Don't catch a bullet Blondie, or might wind up dead,
Your duelling with the best now, there ain't no parlay with Red.

I can spin more rhymes than a merry-go-round,
I'm a hit, hot-shit, with a bangin' fresh new sound.

I'm the best, number one, top of the pile, OG,
Gonna take you to school and bend you over my knee.

You know i'm on fire, can't you feel that heat?
Every corner of town, my name is said on the street.

You're old news, miss Sprite, what once was great,
The new girl surpasses, so it was written by fate.

Gonna leave you with this, bitch, you really don't have a hope,
Every line is tight, everything is lyrically dope.

Turn around, walk away, I'll even blow you a kiss,
In the words of Hammer, girl you know you can't touch this.

So- why you bitches wanna start this beef
and not invite the X? Fuck it, I'll be brief
I know: Oakland guera with the rhyme and the flow
and I know: ginger bomb, tryna steal this show
And you can banter with the best o'them
goin' neck'n'neck and then
Comin' with the 'oosh' and the backwards cap,
and then what?
Drop the King, like you knew that dude,
and then what?
Where do you go, once you run that course?
You gonna claim the MC mantle now with no remorse?

So you hard Twomps bitch, yeah I get the news
'Bout the pint size Blondie with a super short fuse,
And Miss Jones, oh my god, with the Botticelli game
If the carpet's matchin' drapes, can I see that flame?
Outta line?
Hell no, girl I got no shame.
Even if the play is stupid 'cuz I got no claim.
But I ain't fuckin' with you serious,
I ain't even delirious,
I'm just fightin' off the boredom, whicha you is most imperious?
You want some blindfolds, have a slapfight bout?
Maybe, see who amasses more Candyland clout?
Maybe you wonder why the sisters all tend to shout?
Maybe read y'own verse, you'll wanna snuff this out,
too.

Go back to Vandermeer, teachin' the lessons
Go back to Emma and the camera sessions.
Don't try the rap game, cuz' your shit ain't fresh
Or both your asses goin' down like Davey Koresh.
word.

Gonna get the oaktown beatdown, literary two by four to make you frown
Put you down on the ground holding your belly, legs made of jelly, drooling at the telly
Unable to focus as I do my hocus pocus up in your face, no saving grace
Gonna make you eat space, rat race trumps doilies and lace
So yeah, English Red, take a hint from this sprite
Get it right, walk the line, cause if you deviate gonna terminate
You with my wit and my grace, taking it up a level and revevling
In your reckoning, show you how we do it in the dubs
Yeah, that’s the rubs, girl you can’t fling the shit if you ain’t lived in it
Neck deep, hands held high, breathing it in, drinking it down
Twenty four seven, making the rounds
From Fruitvale to Eastside, High street to Hell
Walking the walk, talking the talk, midnight on International

And now, what the fuck, Lady X is stepping up
Taking the mic, think she can rap, take a nap, you’re no longer a badass
Lost your cred when you got wed down there in Dallas
Thing you should know, I’m the queen of the green
Don’t forget it, move out of my way, cause this is my scene
Bitches bend over, you’re gonna get spanked, like Tom Hanks, pulling rank
Red thinks she’s OG, Oh Gosh, Oh Golly, she must have dropped a molly
Polly Anna and Posh, Pride and Prejudice, can’t mosh, can’t take it
Can’t even shake it, she just fake it, while Blondie can rake it
But I don’t need the bling, doing my own thing
Writing the book, got the look, doing Disney like Hunter
S. Thompon, for all you sisters and brothers
Got a hard core edge to my style, make you smile, just before I cap your ass
Little ginger girl better get out of my way, and make it fast, not gonna last.

bring it.
