Why worry, if it ends worrying won't stop it. However if you wake up December 22, 2012 broke and in jail for doing something you felt you needed to do before your last day on earth, YOUR world will be different just not over.

heheh, this world isn't ending. Your existence might, but that is a horse of a different color. The Mayan calendar does not suggest the end of the world or your existence at all. It's merely the end of one of their periods of calculated time. We move to another period of the Mayan calendar's span's of time. Might be a great 36 hour period for a mushroom party, too! With titties and ejaculating penii! Woohoo

I think if I see an honest politician get elected, I'll start believing 2012 is the end of the world.

There are a group of people who believe that the world will end today, May 21, 2011. The person who came up with this prophecy owns a radio network which has raised several million dollars this year in donations. The end of the world is big business. The Mayans had to end their calendar somewhere. It couldn't go on forever. They were five hundred years or so ahead when the Spanish conquered them. My calendar ends on December 31st, 2011. Maybe that's a sign of the end of the world.

Eff no.
I was in central America last summer visiting the Mayan ruins and asked many locals.. They all guestimate the indigenous mayans were too lazy to go past Dec. 21.. If they dont believe it why should I? Haha.. But I guess we'll see in a bit. ;)

The Mayan calander doesn't say the worlds going to end, according to Mayan time keeping, which is more precise than our system and is based on astrology and math, rather than the earths position around the sun, we're in the Mayan 5th period and a 6th period will start right after. The only thing that's gonna happen on dec21 is a precession when the earth completes a wobble on it's axis. They've happened before people need to stop going on websites with opinionated bs from whackjob zealots and actually look at the Mayan calendars.

Nope the world won't end in 2012 because the world is not going any where at all. The idea of a changing of the guard or shifting of the consciousness is what we are all dealing with now and will continue to deal with.

The Mayan calendar does not say the world will end; there a shift in our planet. The world WILL not end at all some might not even notice but itd doesn't mean its not happening. Our planet is in transition.

Yes, it will. But not anytime soon. You're reservations in 2014, 2015, and 2016 are most assured.

The only thing that's constant is change...
OK, triteness complete, I can go on with an actual point. Calendars are set up using somewhat arbitrary start and end dates and then measure time from that point. Even if it's aligned with astronomical events, there's no specific meanings to any of them. As bear noted, our calendar currently ends on Dec. 31, but I'll note that this is our twelfth month and is called DECember so was supposed to be the 10th month (note the prefixes: SEPTember (7), OCTOber (8), NOVEmber (9), DECember (10) ). There were apocalytic predictions in 999 AD, 1999 AD, etc. These presumed that the year of Jesus' birth was the definition of all time or was even known to any certainty. It further assumed that base-10 systems are what the universe is based on in event; a funny idea when the year is 365.25 days long. This Mayan Calendar thing is just a more interesting version of the same thing. As pointed out, we are entering the 6th Mayan cycle and, surprisingly, the Earth didn't end the last 4 times so why assume it will this time? And also, if they were so very smart, how did the Maya miss the whole Conquistador thing? oops. (nothing against the Maya, I revere some of their accomplishments, just they fell a bit short of omnicent).
