I'm not talking about a few years older, lets say about 5-10 years older. How rare are these relationships or encounters? It doesn't seem like a very common thing despite the whole age is just a number thing. Sometimes I feel like I shouldn't even bother. I can understand a single mom with two kids not wanting to go there, but aren't we suppose to be moving on from all of this?

What are your thoughts and experiences on this topic?

i think a young guy stands a perfect chance with older women. i have a friend 41 dating a guy whos 23. young guys can give something to us "older" women that men our age maybe dont so much anymore...

total unadulterated adoration. ;)

And then, you have to change their diapers.

If ya can't beat 'em... pay someone to do it for you.

I think five to ten years difference isnt that bad...but when you get older than that, it screams that someone is desprate and has no confidence in themselves. Seeing someone in their 20s date someone in their 40s + is just wrong. You are in two different places of life you have nothing in common except between the sheets, and no matter how much you connect there thats not enough for a long lasting real realtionship. And anyone who dates someone their kids age, well thats even worse for me.

My ideas on this aren't limited to women being the older party, I think it works both ways seeing a 20 something girl with a 40+ man is wrong too.

My 2 cents

Why not. If the attraction is there who's to stop it

I would have gone with the 5-10 year age gap too until real life happened and I started dating someone 15 plus years younger than me! Once I'd got my head around the age difference I realised it didn't matter at all. We make each other happy. We're compatible as people, and maybe its because neither of us are 'typical' for our ages that it works. But it just works which is the main thing!!

I think it depends on the age of the people involved and the maturity of the male. I have no aversion to going out with a younger male, as long as he can hack the pace with an older woman! ;-)

Several years ago, when I was 31 I was seeing a 19 year old boy, for one reason and one reason only. Sure, the stamina is great, but I'll take experience over it any day. I don't want to be a Mrs. Robinson. It all comes down to personal preference. My husband is a year younger than me and it's working.

With an age gap more than about 10 or 12 years, the younger person would have to be unusually emotionally mature for the relationship to be more than just a fling IMO.

Well I am 30 so I don't know if I fall under the older women category but I would date a guy younger than me... Not a 15 year old but a 20 year old..

Im 25 and am married to a 41 year old woman. Been together for five years, married for one. We couldn't be happier. Oh and she has three children. Id like to thank those of you who are supportive when it comes to subjects like this. CharlotteRusse1 - Yes, I have and am very mature for my age. I don't belive its unusual. AppleOfYourEye - While you are entitiled to your opinion, I am very much offended by your comment.

Something like that offends your sensibilities? Stick around five or six months, I bet you'll be offended a few dozen times.

Thanks for your positive comments smoothsolo1! My much younger boyfriend is also very emotionally mature, and I have friends (both male and female) closer to my own age who couldn't be classed as being emotionally mature at all! I think it just depends on the individual; and on the dynamic of the couple, whether it be older woman with a younger man, vice versa, or same gender!!

I can understand the comments about the older woman/younger man thing being purely sexual, and there's also nothing wrong with a mutually pleasurable fling between consenting adults!

So it seems from the comments that all scenarios are possible, under the right circumstances. I hope this discussion has given you a bit of help busterhymen!

I've seen many wonderful relationships where the woman was older. My best friend is a perfect example. She is 6 years older than the guy she dated for 7 years.
If I found a younger guy I connected with I wouldn't give age much of a second thought. However, at this point it couldn't be too much of an age gap because he would have to be old enough to drink.
I've always had a thing for older men. My current relationship has a 17 year gap.(yes, I'm closer to his kids age than his, and he's closer to my dad's age than mine) Our relationship very fulfilling in all aspects.
My ex-husband was 7 years older but seriously needed to grow up. It's all about the person, and very little about their age.
I haven't discounted the fact that as I get older, I may become more attracted to younger men. I won't say that the thought of schooling a younger man isn't appealing. But I don't want to be anyone else's mommy. Any man I'm with has to be able to stand on his own two feet regardless of age.

I havent really seen that many relationships where the woman was older.. unless it was just a sexual relationship. Ive seen many relationship where the men are older though. And a lot of you guys are gonna hate me for saying this but it kinda makes sense that you see so few older woman/ young male vs so many older male/ young female bcuz women DO mature faster than men. therefore it makes sense that a young female and older male would be at the same point in their lifes and be able to have a healthy relationship. However, I dont see how it makes sense for older female/ younger male unless its purely for sex

I am going to chime in here....my woman is 12 years older than I am, and I have NEVER been happier. I know that I am a very lucky man and am very very special to call her mine, but I think that there are more men out there that are dating older women for more than sex than you think... They have years of knowledge and can call our traditional men's bullshit out very very fast - do not try men please heed my word LOL!

go for it if the feelings are mutual and you can communicate openly then take the chance you've got nothing to lose but an opportunity :)

My mom is 38 and she's mostly dating guys who are at least 10 years younger. The youngest so far is 25 and they seem to have a great time. It's really funny cause I'm like going for older guys and she's going for younger ones. Maybe I'll be the same when I get older. My dad's gf is really young and they are also doing ok so far, so who knows and how do you judge?

If it was just for fun, then I would love to play with a younger guy. For a relationship, I would prefer someone close to my own age unless he was very mature.

What do you mean by older? Fifty? Seventy five? Guys younger than me would have an equal chance with guys my age or older now, and probably would have in the future. The fact that they haven't had as much success with me as older guys is because they haven't tried as hard.

I think it depends on the people involved. I'm not opposed to the idea at all.

This is not my experience, but I have had the opportunity to observe another couple who has had this experience.

She was a family aquaintence and in later years became my mentor and advisor.

As I understand it she was thirty nine once married, with a teenage child. He was 26 and never married. they had known each other for 3 or 4 years and she had rejected him several times. When it became clear we would not go away. I should mention she was at least as beautiful as any model or actress, which could have been a factor. Most said it was only about sex.

Well they celebrated their 48th Wedding Anniversery last spring. We would all like our man to treat us like like he treats her. And the only time I have ever seem any sign of unhappiness is when they are not together.

Does a younger man have a chance with an older woman, the imperical evidence would suggest yes.

Is this the exception? Well that was not the question.
