There is a petition circulating to see iconic Sesame Street characters Bert & Ernie get married. I don't even know what to say to this. Thoughts?

Isn't SS a little young to start them on all this shit? They're just learning ABC and 123, yes? Gawd can't kids just be kids for a little while without having something politically correct shoved down their throats? Ever see a few two and three year old's playing together? They don't see color, sex or anything like that. They just see a toy or a bug or some grass to play with.

I think the response from Sesame Street answers it perfectly

Call me naive, but I never got the impression that Bert and Ernie were anything more than friends.

There's nowt strange as folk. Leave the kids' TV show as is.

Same here. What's wrong with two guys living together? They HAVE to be fucking for it to be ok?

Bert and Ernie are not gay! They're a kids' version of Oscar and Felix. Leave the kids show alone!

its my thinking that if my kid was gay it would be up to me to protect him. even if that meant pulling him out of school and home schooling. also i think if there is sooo much bullying going on in a school to the point a kid kills himself then the admin of said school needs to lock that shit down better. like going back to the days when teacher could hit you with rulers and throw chalk at you. but i agree with the majority here...SS is no place to teach about relationships other than those that the kids who are actually watching are likely to deal with. its a parents place to teach tolerance...not the TV's. ohhh but wait, i live in america where most parents dont think they have a duty to produce well educated, tolerant, loving children...let the schools and SS do it. and we wonder why our country is falling apart.

xuani...you find that better country yet to move to? let me know when you do, ill come with ya.

Bert and Ernie are straight. Those of us in the u.k. remember comedy double act morcecambe and wise. They did sketches where they sat up in the same bed chatting and there was never any question about whether they were gay or straight. Next thing they will suggesting that spongebob and patrick are an item!!!

Spongebob and Patrick are obviously dating - they're always hanging out together, right? We should start a petition for Patrick to finally commit to the relationship and move into the pineapple.

Gordon and Maria are married, aren't they? Think But they're from waaaaaay back and I can't think of anyone else who's been married... *edit* Baby Bear's parents and Elmo's parents have occasionally popped up but who knows - they could just be bf and gf, lol.

Off topic on the topic: Sesame Street isn't as good as it used to be. 20 minutes of repetitive Elmo makes this mom change the channel. I miss all the crazy shit and fun songs they used to have. crybaby Bert and Ernie used to have way more fun together. Wasn't it always great when Ernie did something and got Bert riled up about it?

im all for gay marriage, but i dont think they should be talking about this on CHILDRENS show, its a show for children preferably under the age of 6 they dont care whether burt and ernie are married, or if big bird is a girl or a guy, so why is everybody making a big deal about it?

My kid just got into the first grade. We (my ex and I) have had to explain, upon the little one's request, why certain children have two mommy's, and some two daddies.

It's a simple fact of life. Accept it, and move on.

It's not a "lush low". This forum, and especially the Think Tank section, is for subjects that might not necessarily fall within the norm, and which invite debate and deeper discussion.

If a subject is not to your liking, then you're free to not contribute to it. There are thousands of others available to you.

I certainly think it would provide teachable moments for the children. We have to address the topic of gay marriage/couples at our school on an annual basis. All families are not cookie cutter Ward and June Cleaver Leave It to Beaver families.

Children ask about it at our preschool all the time at school and that might be because they are afraid to ask their parents. They have classmates with two moms or dads and they innocently just want to know why? It's only as big a deal as you make it.

Like religion, gay marriage has no place in the schools. Teach academics at school and leave it at that. Getting into social issues is not what schools are for. Besides the USA is outspending nearly all other modern nations in education and getting less results. Get back to academics.

Bert and Ernie are kids characters. If someone wants to make them sexual maybe they are a child predator in need of intense therapy!

I have written a new poem. It is called 'Long Twisty Woman.'
You can read it at: http://www.lushstories.com/stories/erotic-poems/long-twisty-woman.aspxx
Also, if you wish, check out my co-authored a story with the wonderful DanielleX. It is called 'Focus on Sex.'

i'm going to say that in the case of the above it may have been helpful for the mom and the and dad to have said something like "they have two daddies just like bert and ernie" or something like that. i hear all of the arguments about it being too young. but growing up with two moms (4 actually if you count that they seperated and remarried) it would have been nice if my peers were more educated from the start and i know sometimes parents don't feel comfortable with having a talk and they leave it to books and tv and school to educate kids so if a parent were to not tell there kid about having two moms or two dads then i think it would be beneficial if a tv show did. i'm just saying it would have been nice if i didn't have to fight with kids about no having a dad

"where's your dad?"
"i don't have one"
"yes you do everyone does"
"No i have a donor"
"so is he your dad?"
"no i have never met him i dont even know what he looks like"
"but he is your dad"
"NO HE IS NOT!" it would be helpful to say "my parents are like bert and ernie"
"Oh like those two i get it now"

not saying it should happen but not saying it shouldn't either

Gays and Lesbians aren't the only thing that is difficult to explain to a child. Doesn't mean we should add all the hard conversation topics to kids programming to make it easier on us to explain things.

I mean, none of the other sesame street characters have a sexual orientations do they? Big Bird does seem pretty gay though... I'm sure kids also wonder, for example, why their friend Billy's mommy works at night and comes home reeking of perfume, covered in glitter, and a huge gangster roll of cash in her purse when they sleep over at Billy's house. Doesn't mean this below should be a new sesame street segment so its easier to say to our children, "remember when Elmo was lonely and Cookie monster and Animal took Elmo to that strip club? Billy's mommy is a stripper just like that."

that is a very good point but sesame street has dealt with issues in the past and changed characters accordingly to adjust to the times and as the petition states it may help all those kids feeling alone and helpless due to sexuality. i mean its not like there is an influx of kids commiting suicide over their parents stripper life as hard as it may be.

im saying it is something to think about and should not be so quickly dismissed. frankly im surprised and disappointed to see i am one of the only ones sticking up for the possibility of uniting the two in a romantic way
