We saw this on the Today show this morning. It is beyond bizarre, that's all I can say. And I'm not anti-religion either, LM. Maggie Rascal(Please note, I am no longer active on Lush and will not be responding to messages or friend requests.)

I fail to see what's wrong with this. The boy is obviously not being forced to do this. I mean, I don't see a parent or an adult within 10 feet of him urging him on. Nor do I see shackles or handcuffs or a leash. I think he's been raised in this environment (as is the right of his parent(s) to do) and he's idolized evangelists, instead of other boys idolizing policemen, firemen or professional athletes. It may be his calling or he may get sick of it by the time he reaches his adolescence or adulthood. And I'm not a religious type of feller. But what's wrong with - To each their own?
The best thing you can do for your fellow, next to rousing his conscience, is - not to give him things to think about, but to wake things up that are in him... to make him think things for himself - George MacDonald

I can't see the video because for some reason its blocked in Canada but I fail to see how it would be abusive given that no one is being harmed. Perhaps the title of the thread is misleading

I really don't see anything wrong with this. The kid is up there preaching and looks very excited to do so. EDIT: Besides, it's freedom of religion. Not freedom from religion. He's just doing what he wants to. It doesn't appear that anyone is forcing his hand here. Check out Part 2 of my latest series, Chelsie's Dilemma!

I'm a firm believer in freedom of religion as opposed to freedom from religion. However, a child preaching like that is jus parroting. Very little good if any can come from this. Children are to be taught, not to be doing the teaching. It's exploitation, IMO. When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the loser. Socrates

I guess he and his parents who obviously influenced him have the right to do, say and believe what they like. Is it harmful to the boy, Maybe, Maybe Not? He may become a respected preacher or some extremist lunatic. Or maybe just a well adjusted horny sex crazed teen who sneaks looks at his fathers porn collection (you know he has one, LOL). Time will tell.
I am not religious by any means, but I do believe that everyone has the right to worship who/what and how they like as long as not hurting anyone. But please do not push your beliefs on others and tell them they are wrong for what they believe.
Personally I think this is kind of funny and staged. Looks like an SNL bit only funnier!!

Not like his parents are ever going to admit to it though. But if this is something the kid wants to do, then let him do it. Either he'll turn out to be an outstanding individual when he grows up, or he'll be the complete opposite. Time will only tell. Check out Part 2 of my latest series, Chelsie's Dilemma!

Everyone should be able to worship however they choose. I'm not upset with the Pentecostal church or religion as a whole. I grew up very religious. Spent nearly every weekend as a child/youth at church. Still have very very fond memories of my time there. But, there is a line that is blurry here. Really not a fan of children being used to portray any kind of religious or politcal or environmental dogma. Just seems unsavory to me. I realize they have the right, I just think it's unnecessary at that age. When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the loser. Socrates

well maybe its distasteful to some because the boy is just so young. preaching sermons, leading congregations or "flocks" takes education, experience (both secular and spiritual) and an understanding of human nature that clearly a child of this age does not have. so hes not really "preaching" his mimicking (as has been pointed out)
and we love it when our kids mimic us. its cute when they act like little adults. when they wear our shoes or try out dads electric razor. whats not cute its when we stick them in front of audience all dolled and suited up and tell them to behave in a way that isnt really natural to them, in ways they are not ready for.
"smile for the camera baby! flash those baby blues!" or even "guide the people son, the spirit moves within you" maybe i dont call it child abuse but i sure as shit call it lazy parenting and living vicariously through our children.

lazy parenting IS child abuse. as is allowing ur child to spend to much time on a video game, not in active play, or to overeat to morbid obesity. we have a responsibility to children to not be lazy parents Check out this competition entry from Delphi! Yes, there are many who take it too far, one's who are running for president come to mind, one's who ask others to follow them to the holy land in south american countries, one's who seek not love but hate towards anything but "their" word. However, there are many that go undetected that follow a truly loving message. Just like the nightly news, the bad always outweighs the good. I do believe such good can go without such spectacle, but some people need it.

What if the kid really loves it and shows a talent as well? You might not agree with a parent's encouragement (or even allowance) of this kind of thing, but I don't think any of us can say that the kid is being harmed in any way. I'm with WMM and CuriousButterfly; it's not my cup of tea, but so what?

the problem I have with religous zealots, no matter the religon is they dont leave any room for the possibility of some error. To me a religon should be like an opinion, urs is unique to you and you should be allow to have your belief right or wrong. If you tell a zealot, be it christian, muslim, ect, that theirs is not what you think is right you are automatically open for an ongoing full out assault, and they think its for your own good! Harken me well, i go to the hell (or heaven0 of my own choosing, leave me out of your quest to convert the world! What this boys parents have done is no different then how the jihadists have taught their children. I agree with you about hateful religious zeal, but: 1. We have no idea what this person or his parents are actually like. 2. Assuming they are judgemental, closed-minded zealots based on their chosen religion means treating them exactly the way you hate to be treated. Comparing them to jihadists just takes the assumption to another, offensive, level.

Well, who knows how spontaneous it really is, but if he enjoys doing it, then why does it matter what religion has to do with it? To say that any religious upbringing amounts to brainwashing is a valid, debatable point, but that's a broader argument to make, and not much more open-minded than one might accuse religious zealots of being.
