You're in charge. The legislature is set up however needed to push through any and all you want or ask. Within the boundaries of the Constitution and without disrupting the Bill of Rights, you get to push through your five most important bills, laws, amendments, whatever. Name your five. 1. Complete overhaul of educating our children. Kids will be taught to think and learn. Not how to memorize or just recite/regurgitate what they've been told. 2. Gay marriage legalized. The sanctity of no one's marriage is affected by two dudes or two women getting married. The only people that can affect the sanctity of a marriage are the two people actually IN that marriage. 3. Scraping of the specialized healthcare for Congressmen. They shouldn't have options that aren't available to the people they serve. 4. Drill baby, drill. As a country we should be totally self-sufficient and not have to rely on anyone else for our own survival. All safety and environmental concerns would be handled and dealt with appropriately. 5. Reduce spending across the board. Bring troops home from wars that can't be won and have them protect our borders. Stop wasting money on issues that are already decided by the Constitution and/or the Supreme Court (you hear me Pro-Life advocates). Gov. assistance will be limited. Going forward, the government will only assist financially with 2 children per family (existing large families are grandfather claused in), thus significantly reducing that spending within one generation. Government will also only be responsible for educating 2 children per family. If you want more kids, you pay for their education yourself. Tort reform. If you sue and lose, you pay. Stop pork Halt frivolous spending When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the loser. Socrates

As POTUS I would have a whole slate of issues to deal with but my top 5 are this
1. Drill, drill, drill. Both for oil and natural gas. We are the middle east of natural gas. Role back all the unnecessary regulations that do nothing but stand in the way. Yes we can do it safe but the environmental wackos have gone way to far to limit the exploration of our natural resources.
2. Eliminate the United Nations. We have funded this left wing corrupt organization for far too long. We will withhold any further payments until they have completely overhauled the place from top to bottom. If they wont reform we will with draw from it.
3. Eliminate the Department of Education. Put the control back with the states and let them decide what is best for the children.
4. Get the NLRB back to what it was intended to do and that is FAIRLY arbitrate the conflict between labor and business. Not let it be there to just advance the unions agenda.
5. Across the board 20% reduction in every budget of every department in the federal government. That includes the budget for Congress. Eliminate the special medical care for congress and make them subject to the very laws and rules the put on every other business.
That is my top 5 but I have a lot more that come to mind

get congress to pass a constitutional amendment to get money out of politics. i'm tired of my country being bought by the highest bidder. Success is doing what you love, and doing it so well that someone will pay you for it.http://www.lushstories.com/fantasyfiction

Campaign finance reform. Until corporations and the rich no longer have an outsized say it our politics nothing will ever be solved.
And no drill baby drill. We as a nation must move away from fossil fuels.

Real education should be a priority. I agree with lafayettemister that education has to be more than simple rote memorization. People need to learn to actually think, to reason for themselves, not just parrot what they've been taught. I would also do a complete overhaul of energy policy. Drill, drill, drill is just a republican talking point and would actually do very little long term good for either the economy, the environment or the price of gasoline. Gas prices are based on prices driven by speculation rather than supply now. Just drilling won't help that.
Of course, I don't think that the entire energy supply should be controlled by just a few big oil companies either. The country needs to be working actively toward an energy policy that will keep us running after the oil and gas supplies are gone. They are not going to last forever. Prices can only continue to go up as it becomes more and more expensive to recover gas and oil. We need to be working on renewable energy resources. We are not going to be able to become energy dependent on oil and gas alone. We need to examine alternative energy, especially ways to make nuclear energy safer and more affordable, and large scale bio-diesel production.

1. Overhaul the education system. This includes having one standard for education across the nation for grade school, but also involves a re-doing of the post-secondary education system. People shouldn't need a PHD to work at Starbucks, but that seems to be where we are currently headed. Instead I would implement more of an apprenticeship style learning experience, even for the non trades. This would allow people to enter the work force straight out of high school, get an education, and not hurt the economy by having so much money tied up in student debt for educations that really did not help them.
2. Overhaul the health care system. Starting by paying general practitioners more money so there will be enough that everyone in Canada has a family doctor. This will eliminate a lot of the backlog in the emergency rooms of hospitals. Create specialization hospitals. Every hospital will have an emergency department, but for longer term issues like cancer, dialysis, mental health, etc in cities with multiple hospitals, each hospital would focus on a different thing, cutting down on the overhead expense and making better use of MRI machines and other medical equipment.
3. Add another $0.50/litre to the gasoline tax. This would be used entirely for developing better public transit. It would also have a number of positive side effects: People would buy more fuel efficient vehicles. More people would use public transit. It would cut urban sprawl as people started to value living close to work and entertainment options. (Downtown condos over a house in the suburbs) And lastly it would cut down on pollution, hopefully slowing global warming.
4. Apologize for not honouring our Kyoto commitment, and enact very strict emissions limits with financial penalties. This money would go directly to the research and development of cleaner technologies to replace the polluting ones. I would also have an option for the offending companies to spend the penalties internally, on their own clean air R&D, as long as there was proof it was a concerted effort with environmental improvement as the primary focus. (encourages companies to find a competitive advantage by eventually paying less fines than competitors in the same industry, rather than hoping for industry wide improvements)
5. Refocus the military back to doing peace keeping and disaster relief. No more fighting wars, instead focus on defending aid trucks, policing in conflict zones, and training local military and police forces. Spend more money on our portable water filtration system so we can have more systems ready to go, and filter water faster.

I'd most likely cause an armed insurrection. First off there would be a bevy of babes and hot tubs for Air Force One. Vargas paintings in the Oval Office. Turn being president into a reality TV show. Make Rick Santorum and Kim Kardashian mud wrestle every night on prime time. (Kardashian would easily whip his whiny ass.) Eliminate domed stadiums for football. Get a whole new team of players for the Florida Marlins. Make MTV show nothing but music videos. Make the History Channel actually do history. Conquer Belize and make it my own private resort. (Sorry Belizians.) Add several porn categories to the Oscars. Make Jimmy Swaggart dress like a pimp. (therefore eliminating the facade!) Force tort reform. Severely limit the number of lawyers that can hold public office and eliminate them all together from the US Congress. Have an internet website totally devoted to reporting the income, gifts, etc. of all US Congressman and US Senators, and make sure all that was reported on TV also. Ban Barroid Bonds from ever being in the Baseball Hall of Fame (for using steroids to break the home run record.) Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa also banned! Restore the homerun records back to the guys that didn't cheat!

More commuter rail systems. Higher restrictions on lobbyists. Add to the National Parks & National Forests. Make BP clean up the ocean floor in the Gulf of Mexico and make them pay for restoring the coral reefs. Imprison the Federal inspectors who were too lazy and incompetent or corrupt to keep an eye on the BP gulf oil rigs. Make each state come up with their own public healthcare plan. Louisiana actually has great state healthcare that will diminish if Obama's federal plan takes over. Stricter air pollution standards. Bannish Kim Kardashian & Rick Santorum from America. (in response to ArtMan's post. LOL) Increase littering fines. Limit presidential war powers. Give schools permission to discipline unruly children and fine parents that don't discipline their kids. Lift restrictions against gay marriage.

Standardize motor vehicle laws and enforcement nationwide, preferably in an agreement with Canada, so that both countries are the same. Repeal the current Federal Income Tax law and reinstitute one with no deductions, and that makes it illegal for states to pass any income tax law that is substantially different from the Federal one. Eliminate all private financing of all elections. Require that the losing party in all civil lawsuits be liable for all court and attorney's fees, for both parties. Require that the Surpeme Court be only allowed a strict Yea or Nay vote based solely on the copnstitutionality of any question placed before them. Require that all laws passed by any body whatsoever include a severance clause. Require that Supreme court justices be personally responsible for reading the entire text of every law on which they are to decide. (And yes, Justice Scalia, I DO expect you to read all twenty two hundred pages; it's your effing job, you dunderhead. If you don't want to do it, then resign from the court, and allow somone who is willing to do it sit in the adult chair.)
