All speech is arbitrary so there is some ambiguity in one word having bad connotations and makes me wonder about the reasons thus related. Why do we use sexual words as an insult or as a sign of impatience like "what the fuck" etc Why use sexual words as an insult atall? Is it perhaps because they are intimate words and therefore we are getting at someone in a particularly intimate way and therefore the insult or expression gains depth? As for cunt well I have heard dick being used as an insult eg dickhead but have not gained a negative attitude regarding referring to my penis as a dick. Of course in the UK fanny has a different meaning to the US and UK women have been known to abbreviate and affectionately refer to their vagina as a fan. This brings to mind how many colloquial words there are for this most sought after organ quim, fanny, twat, fairy, the list is endless. My personal dislike is twat but there again there's no accounting for taste.

For me, it depends entirely on the context in which it's used. When the word is directed at another person in anger it can be a funny word. Though when it's used to describe a vagina, I find it quite vulgar and disgusting.

Farmgirl your definition of being called a Cunt or a Bitch is well thought out. Neither of those terms in that context were designed to be loving or erotic.

To be honest, it is just a word. It can be hurtful or not, depending on how it's used. Like, I can call my best friend a bitch and we can laugh about it, but if I'm mad and call her a bitch, it's different.

if someone is referring to my pussy as a cunt i have no problem with that, if you are licking, kissing, sucking, or fucking it you can call it anything you want. just don't call me a cunt, not nice.

Back onto the subject, I noticed that a lot of women here find it too strong of a word that should be used sparingly, if at all for some. I'm not offended at all by the word, but I always thought of it as an insult.
"Pussy" however, always struck me vulgar...
Are you truly awake?

Watch SPARTACUS, on STARZ. Everyone, several hundred years ago used the word in vulgar and complimentary terms. You'll have to Google it yourself, no links provided here. I don't wish to be banned from Lush. That is one helluva program.

I have major issues with it being used to insult a person, but then I have issues with any type of swearing when its done in anger

I don't like it, but I've always heard it used in a very derogatory manner.

Explain to me the logic of how a beautiful thing becomes used as a harsh invective? Saying it is an invective term implies that there is no other way to use it other than as abusive or degrading although it does make your opinion of the word very clear. To answer your question of how it becomes something else, I can't really. I just know that for me at some point during sex, when it get's hot and heavy, the word cunt feels a bit naughtier and makes it more exciting. I certainly don't mean it as offensive. Maybe I'm wrong but I think the point of the topic is, can the word like cunt be used in a context that is not seen as invective or derogatory. I have asked this question myself because I worried that it could ruin a very nice moment and I guess the answer is yes, it sure can.

I find it really doesn't bother me at all, and when having sex I find it hot
But in real life, I don't dislike, I don't even think twice about it

Doesn't bother me a bit. Actually prefer it to "pussy", which clearly does not fall from the tongue quite as eloquently. . .I'm a loner, Dottie. A Rebel... . .

I am a very broadminded woman and very few things upset me. I must be quite frank in saying that I abhor the use of the word cunt. Women deserve a lot better. It is very crude, offensive and derogatory. It is not something to be proud of like a pussy, fanny, minge, snatch, gash, fur burger, hairy magnet, bearded clam, cooch, kipper cove, cock wallet, .... to name a few.
If anyone called me a cunt I would slap then on the face or knee a guy in the balls.
Have I made my point?

The word really doesn't phase me. People use it so often it's as commonplace as the word fuck and so I think it's losing the edginess and imapct that make it so wholesomely detested.
I use the word quite frequently, but I'm lady enough to suss where and when it isn't appropriate!

My wife hated and banned the word but she would call someone (usually male) a twat without hesitation.
The Wikipedia entry for cunt is well worth reading (if only for Stephen Fry's definition of 'countryside' as the act of murdering Piers Morgan).
The British Guardian newspaper prints it occasionally.
