I'm not sure if this subject has been broached before and if it has I apologize.

I recently did a favor for a complete stranger who had asked for help in 'proofing' his story. I offered my services and spent a few hours tweaking and correcting some of the grammar, punctuation, and general readability of his story.

Is it common, or should I expect some sort of recognition for my work either in the body of the story as a footnote or in the comment section.

I am not looking for a pat on the back or even an 'atta-boy' but I would think that common courtesy would prevail.

Any thoughts???

Flash a Trucker... It's appreciated!!

A footnote or comment underneath the story, would be a nice gesture.

I've seen them placed at the beginning of stories before, but for me, that interrupts the flow.

Let me get this straight here...you did a "favor" for a complete stranger, then offered your "services" and finally spent a few hours "tweaking"...

Hmmm...normally I like to get paid in advance for that sort of thing, but...

Oh wait...we're talking stories here? Yeah, like Nic said...a note at the end is fine...

Well keep in mind, out of all the people who've submitted stories on here, how many of them can name at least 5 story verifiers WITHOUT checking their inboxes??

Not saying that you don't deserve credit, but there are volunteers here who edit stories (note the plural) around the clock. I've not once read a single story that included a note in it thanking the verifier for reading/tweaking/proofing/approving their stories. Just wanted to throw that out there.

Again, I'm not saying you don't deserve your due credit, but I'm sure whoever you did this favor for is very grateful. And as long as they expressed their gratitude to you in some form, it doesn't necessarily warrant a cameo in their posted story.

Hear, hear!

It would be a nice gesture but I don't think you should expect it. Editors are often unsung heroes; you just gotta live with it, knowing in your heart that you did a nice thing for someone who needed the help.

I wasn't aware the verifiers did all the things the OP was talking about. Old mate Imhapless did edit a story I had submitted, but I think he knew me well enough to know that I would approve the changes, (I'd crossed the guidelines a little). But it's a bit much to expect the verifiers to be grammar correctors and spell checkers.

As far as the verifiers go, I think they do a wonderful job here. A sense of humor must be a prerequisite, hats off to the lot of you.

A little note of thanks as a footnote would be a nice gesture.

There is a huge amount of work that goes on behind the scenes by the story verifiers. In my experience, they go above and beyond the remits of their role in order to keep Lush the best erotica stories site there is. If all stories were posted with no tweaking/rearranging/spell-checking/formatting etc, it would be obvious that not all writers have a grasp of the English language or how to use it. Myself included (I had a glaringly obvious mistake yesterday that Maz spotted right away). I don't think it's their remit at all, but I do know they are long-suffering. It's up to us as writers to check it ourselves.

Recognition and thanks is a wonderful thing, but if one does a favour, one must be aware of the risks. Personlly, I hate the recognition, but a little thank you makes me grin. I like to get on with things quietly, but I also like to give praise where it's due. But like I said, a favour is a favour, not a deal, unless specified.

Indeed it is all those behind the scene that make it all happen! clapping

i often get thank yous as PMs from writers, which always make my day. as far as public recognition? no, not something i need or desire, although, yes, as mentioned, it's not always just reading a story and okaying it - most of us will fix typos, grammar, spelling errors, and formatting errors IF they are not so rampant that it become a job (even then, if things are slow, we'll take them on).

oh, and we get nasty letters back too, on occasion, if someone's not happy at a rejection because they didn't take the time to make their story publishable. those are the ones that get to me. it also makes me less likely to help them out with edits in the future, so thank you to all the people who take rejections as intended - a chance to clean up a story, something beneficial to both you and your readers and your poor, hard working mods. :)

Thank you Miss Slippery for the kind thoughts!

Who would have guessed that my little tale, the very First one I ever submitted to Lush would be read by so many?
It shocks me a little to realize that it has now served over 20,000!

Thank you so very much to those who have read it!

How about if I just submit a blank document, and you write a hot, well-written story for me...you know, if things are slow and you have the time...

Would that be too much to ask?

Something like this maybe?

DM stood at his window, watching as his new neighbour cleaned her house clad in nothing but her birthday suit. He took a healthy gulp from the glass of amber coloured liquid clutched in his palm. It was almost like she was putting on a show, just for him, her long red hair brushed the middle of her back as she moved around, always keeping her back towards him.

She wiggled her ass as she dusted her coffee table. DM's eyes followed each and every wiggle as his hand slid down his own stomach to his pants. He was about to take matters into his own hands so-to-speak, when she started to turn towards the window.

He held his breath as she turned slowly. This was it. He was finally going to see ALL of her. DM went pale and the glass of liquer went tumbling to the floor as he realised that she was in fact a he with long hair and a gorgeous ass.

While its nice to get the occasional thank you note I never started verifying stories for recognition. I guess that's why it's all the more welcome when it comes.

I have been asked several times from Lush readers if I would mind proofing and correcting their stories before they submit them because they have told me that they have read my stories and see how well developed they are and they can tell that I take my time to get my stories correct grammatically and content-wise before I send it for authorization.

That makes me feel good to have other readers tell me that, so I gladly tell them that I will be glad to do so because it is something I like to do and I like to help a fellow Lush member.

I can't tell you how many stories I have actually proofed for a Lush member and I never have received a thank you as a footnote in a story. They do send me a PM thanking me and sometimes it is enough for me.

I can only imagine what the volunteers and moderators go through on a daily basis here having to read so many stories from authors. I know that it is a task in itself. I would like to hope that my proofing a story from a fellow Lush member would make the process easier when submitted.

My hand goes out to you volunteers and moderators for the jobs that you all do. If it were not for you, I am sure that Lush would not be as much as wonderful place as it is now.

A hand up for jobs well done!

Come see me in my office...

Loved the story. Did he still go over to his neighbour's house? Enquiring minds need Part 2!

On my way boss! *scrambling to find those assless chaps that you like*

As for the story, that ass was so scrumptious looking that he couldn't help himself, he had to go over.
He didn't swing that way, but he figured that in the right position, he'd be able to pretend that the he was the she that he'd first imagined.
He knocked on the door and squeezed his eyes shut, if his neighbour had a beard, no amount of imagination would make up for it.
The door creaked as it swung open and. .. to be continued (don't you just love cliffhangers heheheh)

A private thank you would be the polite thing to do and appropriate. A public one might be too much to expect.

I have done some editing for a friend and he did acknowledge it in his story.
