Gay marriage passed in Maine and Maryland... jury is still out in my state with 60% of votes counted - we're ahead 52 to 48%... cautiously optimistic.... until we're 100% sure, i'm going to be nervous... not getting a lot of sleep tonight...

The long campaign is over, now it's time for everyone to put aside partisan bickering and come together to fix this country in a way that all Americans benefit.
Congratulations to President Obama and thanks to Gov. Romney for his service and efforts on behalf of the US.

I look at that 2nd party control as a check & balance. It keeps it so neither party can ram some of the more extreme measures down the throat of the American people. I think that we live in different ways. That's why we have different views and are so bitterly divided. I used to identify more as a democrat, but then I realized the extremists that that party embraces is trying to put so many out of their livelihoods. I am going to focus on the positives: Washington, Maryland, Maine, Colorado, and N Dakota! Good for these states!

I agree, but since President Obama won the election in 2008, the Republican's sole sworn duty was to obstruct virtually every measure and policy Obama put forward and make him a one term President. The right had absolutely no interest in compromise for the good of the nation, they were doing only the bidding of the wealthy to the detriment of the middle class, working class and poor, all the while insisting that they are doing what's best for America. If that was true, we wouldn't be in the mess we're in.

"Hopefully Obama's victory and more importantly Warren's in Massachusetts represent the beginning of the end for the angry white men's vote in American politics. The GOP right now is in ICU with a severe case of the Stockholm Syndrome. And Lee Atwater, the sinister political operative behind the infamous Willie Horton campaign ads, must be spinning like a lathe in his grave. Being a crusty and cynical old fart, that is, a retired baby boomer and disabled Vietnam vet who has just seen too much how the real world works, I felt like a young man last night. I had such a profound attack of schadenfreude, I almost looked for my little brown bottle of nitro tablets thinking it was an angina attack. The I realized I was experiencing such joy and hope for the future. Maybe, just maybe America is finally making a historical course correction toward normalcy. I thought I was watching a corny ending to an old Frank Capra movie. But I just hope Obama stops his tired "nice guy routine," takes off the gloves and get medieval on the GOP's ass in the next four years. Jimmy Morrison of The Doors was wrong. You can petition the Lord with prayers. Power to the people. "The little power," as Melanie Griffith said to Harrison Ford in Working Girl." One of the lessons of the election is that the demography of the US is changing and the formula used by the GOP for years will no longer work. Let's hope they are not obstructionist in Obama's second term and put country before party. These are the people who vowed that they would do everything they could to see him fail and not win re-election. The question of the day is, "How did that work for you?"

I started out this election circus thinking the Republicans were in trouble, for reasons that are sort of obvious. Then, because of the economy- namely the fact that no president since Roosevelt has ever been re-elected in such bad conditions- and because of widespread vehement opposition to Obama on a personal level, I began to think this was the proverbial “unlosable election” for Republicans. The polling data suggested Obama would win, but Republicans had all these theories for why the polls were wrong, and that at the literal end of the day, a big silent majority would make their voice heard and show Obama the door.
Well, turns out that didn’t happen. In fact, the race wasn’t as close as it could’ve been, what with Obama winning every single contestable state (except for North Carolina).
I think the story of this election will be the rise of Latino voting power. It’s been long regarded as a sleeping giant, and it appears to have finally awakened even as it grows larger. To me, this is the tipping point for the Republican Party, at least as far as national elections go. They’ve done nothing to attract Latino voters, just as they’ve never done anything to attract voters of any color. They’ve been just as exclusionary toward women and the working class. They’ve only done things to repel all of those groups, and they’ve done them repeatedly.
Take this election, for instance.
What did they do to attract women? They called a contraception coverage rights advocate a slut, and opposed the very concept of insurance coverage for contraceptives. They advocated abortion bans.
What did they do to attract minorities? They suggested that millions of residents practice self-deportation, and generally stood opposed to any sort of comprehensive reform that didn’t result in mass exodus of undocumented residents.
What did they do to attract the working class? They accused them of being takers and not worth courting.
Republicans and conservatives can argue until they’re blue in the face that they aren’t racist, or misogynist, or nativist, or plutocrats, or any of those things. And it’s certainly not true of all, or even most, Republicans. But the policies they seek, and the tone with which they advocate them, should leave no question in their minds as to why they lost a seemingly un-losable election. The days of depending on whitey to carry a national election are over. Figure out how to be more inclusive, how to look at a rapidly changing nation in a different light, or be relegated to crackpot regionalism. Their tea party extremism just makes them look like maniacs. Meanwhile, their demographic problems are only getting worse.

The republican party has completely forgotten the message that brought them to prominence in the 80's, that of fiscal responsibility and smaller government. They did not, however, shed themselves of the baggage of the religious right and the bigoted narrow minded agenda of their party. Now, they stand at a very important crossroad and I actually hope they can realize the danger they are in. Failing to do so will mean that they decline into being a niche party with little appeal to the mainstream of American voters. This may seem a good thing to some, but left with no serious challengers, the democratic party will have no reason to stay in the centrist mode Bill Clinton and Obama have followed and will almost certainly begin moving to the far left. One party rule has never been good for any country and unless the republicans can somehow show the wisdom to fundamentally change their platform, one party rule is exactly where we are headed.

I thought I heard before I went to bed, that the popular vote went to Romney but the electoral vote is what Obama won with. Or was winning with at the time. Same as in '00 with Gore, if it wasn't with the electoral votes W. wouldn't have won.

Obama will be the clear-cut popular vote winner, and Romney will have garnered less votes than McCain did in 2008. Given that the US has gained 15 million citizens since then, that speaks volumes.
