Just an FYI for anyone using OpenOffice. There was a bit of an upheaval in the community. It used to be owned by Sun Microsystems and developed by a large volunteer community. Sun was recently purchased by Oracle. If you think MS is evil, just you wait. Anyways, OpenOffice is still free. It is possible that it may remain free. But the large volunteer community that developed it has moved on. They forked the codebase and have now been working on a new project called Libre Office. Personally I love opensource software. I even use an open source operating system on my computers. So does anyone who runs a tivo or other television recording device or an Android device. One of the strengths and weaknesses of open source software is that it can be forked. At this point they are mostly one in the same. But as time passes they will begin to diverge from each other. The good news is that despite what happens with OpenOffice, LibreOffice will always be free; as in speech and in beer. Here is a link for more information about the situation.

It will stay the course and Oracle will incorporate LibreOffice changes into OpenOffice.

I use OpenOffice n got the latest version awhile ago haven't had any problem but some minor spell checks I have to re do as I submit here  I hope they don't go crazy n change it

I've started using AbiWord. I haven't used it long though. I had difficulty with the spell check doing contractions, had to add every one of them, but aside from that it's worked fine. I don't know if it's part of a suite or not, I only have word which I downloaded by itself. I use the OpenOffice suite, but will probably switch over to LibreOffice. The word processor is the most important to me anyway. and AbiWord is sufficient for my needs, which is just basic word processing and being able to save in .doc and .pdf. If LibreOffice works as well or better than AbiWord I'll use it.

I use OpenOffice Portable so I can run it directly off a flash drive without having to install (and thereby being able to use it no matter where I happen to be using a computer). Does anyone know if LibreOffice has a portable version?

I have used open office for my stories and for proofing for others. I find it a handy tool. It's not all cluttered with things that I don't know how to use anyway. I just wish there was a grammar and punctuation check system.

I was just reading an article this morning about Open Office in The Register (a UK IT new website). It is no longer in Oracle's hands. They have handed off to the Apache Foundation, an open source group best known for the Apache web server that is widely used on the Internet. Unfortunately, Apache has taken a lot of time getting their new Open Office project up and running (over and above the time lost due to the Libre Office folks leaving when Oracle took over) allowing Libre Office to pull ahead in the open source application race. Upshot for non-geeks: Open Office is still out there and will remain free, but if you want something that is being actively maintained and upgraded, you're probably better off with Libre Office for now.

I got a used laptop with both Open Office and Microsoft Office loaded. I uninstalled Open Office to free up more disk space and now all my .doc files will not open automatically with MS Word. I have to go to "Open with" each time I open a word file. How do I tell my machine to use MS Word as the default program?

Right click on a document in the Explorer window. Select "open with" and choose Word....you can choose to always I open that kind of file with the chosen program

as a hotbod4u mentions if you use the open with... there's a check box to check to always open your files with the program you chose. I use open office for all of my writings. I've not switched over to libre office. As long as my soft ware is free and works for me I do not intend to change either. A tip when using open office is the search function (ctrl+f) it's perfect to check how often you use one and the same word. he, she, it, I, mr brownstone, that.

at the bottom of the list you should be able to pick "choose default program" Or something similar.

Should be at bottom of the screen where you select the program. In Windows 7 it says "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file"

OK, got now. The first pop-out list only had 3 choices including (MS Word) with the last one "Choose Program". I hit that and got a longer list with the default option at the bottom. Thanks for the help.
