People who write erotica for online publication are fortunate because they can choose what they write and cater the stories to their own tastes.

But how about this hypothetical question....

Think of the category of erotica that you detest the most, or offends your sensibilities (maybe it's incest, BDSM, scat, humiliation/domination or love stories).

Now let's say that a publisher approaches you because they like your writing style and offers to pay you enough that you'd be able to eke out a decent living writing erotica, but they would all have to be stories in that genre that you hate.

Would you take the offer (and the cash!), be able to put aside your feelings about those kind of sexual practices and somehow find a way to write the stories?

Or would you say 'no' on the basis that you refuse to sell out and only want to write what you like, even if you'll never be paid for it.

As much as I'd say I'd love to take the cash... I don't think I can write as well and effectively if it's a genre that makes my skin crawl.

Part of writing erotica (writing anything really) is that in order to write it well, you have to understand it and believe in the words you are committing to a page. When you're writing about something you don't believe in, any word you write will be a shadow in comparison to the strength you find in the language when you write about something you love, enjoy, lust after. And when the words, story, language is weak, the why would anyone pay you anything?

It's almost be excatly like working in a cube for me - it would be a "living", but not living...

When your passion is manipulated by the expectations of others, it is no longer your passion but their desire. If the desire of the others is your passion, no amount of money will make a difference. If your desire is to make money, nothing will stop you. This goes for any business, I think.

Money does not personally motivate me. If my heart isn't in it, I want nothing to do with it. If my name is on it, my heart is attached.

I think that pretty much sums it up for me...I wouldn't mind being able to do this for a living...heck, I do it now for free...
But they probably would not like my writing style if it was in a genre I hated...

You know you want it, you know you need it bad...get it now on Amazon.com...

I'm unemployed, I'd take the money.

How about turning this question into a challenge?
Write a story in the genre you hate for publication on Lush or a vignette for this forum.

hmmm.... for me, I'd combine Not my thing (gay) with revulsion (scat). I'll think about it.

Anyone else like the challenge idea?

Paddler - I'd take you up on the challenge... I'm going to have to take you up on the vignette though... I don't think I can go through with a whole story.

For me, Incest makes my skin crawl...

I think I would take the money. I would give it a try and if it gets good results I'd keep doing it. I'm sure I'd get some sick satisfaction from it. Plus who wouldn't like to brag that they get paid to write?

umm... thing is, i don't have issues with any catagory - i even intend to write gay man sex at some point, and the others are all things i 'm comfy with, so... now, that said, the banned catogory of underage, there's NO way i'd write in that catagory for any amount of money - i'd just feel dirty and sick to my stomach. and Scat, yeah, no way i could turn that into an erotic story, not even for boat loads of money.

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

Being a poor college student, I'd try.... But I can't promise anything good of it.

~ "She left the web, she left the loom,
She made three paces through the room,
She saw the water-lily bloom,
She saw the helmet and the plume,
She look'd down to Camelot.
Out flew the web and floated wide;
The mirror crack'd from side to side;
"The curse is come upon me," cried
The Lady of Shalott. "

I'd gladly take the money; I'd work my way around it. I know it shows no moral character, but I'd gladly sell out.

Call me a whore if you like, but I'd do it. Unless it was about underage particpants. That is wrong on a different level. But if it involves adults...I'd do it. There are many examples of people who hate what they do, but they do it because it pays the bills or is the best option for them. I doubt Ronald McDonald likes hamburgers anymore, by now he's probably a vegetarian. But he's not going to stop making burgers. Think of all teh Chippendale dancers...I think most of us know that some, if not most, of those guys are gay. Surely they don't get any enjoyment out of women groping and fawning all over them. And there are plenty of lesbians that work as exotic dancers as well. How much must it suck for a woman that isn't in to men, to have to give lap dances and grind on some dudes hard-on. But, it's great money and if you got it flaunt it. If I had the writing chops to be approached to write a story, any story, I'd jump at the chance. I guess i'm just a prostitue. lol

I've done plenty of whoring in my life, in quite a few of my jobs throughout both careers. It's an occupational hazard, but it has paid the bills and stocked the bank account.

I just come onto forums and websites like this one and pretend I'm actually a well made male/artist of fine, real life reputation.

Take the money and run, ffs's

Thinking.....

Still thinking.....

Aw hell, I'm writing under a pseudonym anyway so, yes, I'll take the money and see how it works out. Mind you, it just becomes a job then.

I think if you are going to call your self an author then you should be able to seperate yourself from the story and do the job you are paid to do.

Writing is much like acting. Stepping into roles wholly unfamiliar and making them real, believable, is a huge piece of the craft. Making the role -- or the story -- my own, making the words sing -- allows me to take that which might otherwise be repugnant and redeem it. Perhaps not redeemable to the extend that I'd want to have the book on my coffee table, but enough that I'd be proud of my work.

I'd stay true to my convictions, but I'd write then under a alias name and take the cash. Then no one whould know that I did it.
Well that's just my opinion, sorry if you don't like.

Couldn't do it, Doll. I've spent too much time earning from jobs I hate. I could write to spec if it inspired me, but ain't no one gonna make me force it out when it constipates me. Now there's a disagreeable metaphor.

Considering the above new york asian escorts mentioned, we can come to the conclusion that to give up wisely is a kind of new york escorts more mature life attitude. Though giving up sometimes is ny escorts painful and costly,in the long run what we nyc escorts gain will definitely far out weight what we lose.

Keep the money.

I DO write for a living, but there are certain lines I won't cross. If an editor wants me to write something that's not my thing (rimming, for example), sure I'll write it. If it's something that squicks me out so badly it makes my skin crawl? No. Not gonna happen. That would remove all my enjoyment of the writing process, and I'd quite frankly rather go back into customer service -- hell, RETAIL -- than write porn, scat, etc.

Also, if a publisher was publishing that kind of thing, I would seriously question my desire to continue working with them. I already have a few publishers on my personal "do not submit" list for this very reason.

I'd like to think I had the creative flexibility to do so, but, I write mostly from experience (Disclaimer: that's not to say I have done everything I write about, but what I write about I do relate to at least, on some level) So anyone who paid me to write something diametrically opposed to my turn-ons is going to end up with a shitty story they couldn't sell anyway.

If th epublisher is willing to pay, and he/she must know of your distaste, then go for it, take the money. If you are successful, then you'll have the power to change, and the publisher who follows the money will go along wioth youy - assuming you are any good!

I love writing things that disgust me. It gives me a little thrill. My latest project of writing is to write about something really tasteless from a point of view that is supposed to make it seem tasteful for a character.
I wouldn't say no to writing it, but I might not be able to pull through writing about the stock market.

Not really. If you are successful, your publisher will want more of the same. If it ain't broke, don't fix it...give us more of what sold really well the first time around. That, and you'll gain a reputation among your readers as writing that sort of thing. Those who were turned off by it won't touch your work with a ten-foot pole (personally, I have a blacklist of several authors whose work I won't go near). Those who liked it will expect more of the same.

So, if you were to go along with this sort of hypothetical, you're more likely to be asked to write more of the same, not be able to take liberties and do what you want to do.
