Are you starting to feel a bit lost when you are in the chat room? Everyone else seem to know how to do this and that? Does your friend send italic lovepoems over the online messages and you can't do the same back? Here's your text version guide to all the fun things. Enjoy!Applies to all the different chats:Font:Bold text: *text* Italic text: _text_ Strike through: -text- (funny enough I do not know how to do it in the forums.) Emotes:To insert an emote icon in an online message use its code. You can find the code for the emote icon when holding your cursor over it in the chat room or in this >>thread<<. Example: (ke) = Avay message:When you change your status to busy in the Chat room there will be an auto reply whispered to anyone who's trying to speak with you. Most people aren't aware that you can customise this message in your settings. Online statusYou can choose to send it to your online messages here aswell. The public chat rooms:Whisper:@username Your text. Actions:You have to have someone's name marked to do this. <instert your action text here> (do not use any ,.^'!") Example: <serenades> Catnip serenades Nicola Turning off pictures and whispers:Go to your privacy settings and scroll down to the bottom. Post Youtube video:Copy the URL of the video and post it in the chat room. (In case the video doesn't work press share--> Options: Check 'Long link' box and copy the url generated in the box above. ) Post a picture:If the picture is in your Gallery at Lush you put the image description in between [] and hit enter. [description] If the picture is elsewhere on the site or another site you go this way: 1. Right click the image you want to post. 2. Pick the option "Copy Image URL" 3. Paste the link into the text box in the chat room. 4 Press enter.

Isn't there a screen of emoticons you can just click and they get inserted? It seems messy having to go and find code for something that people should just be able to click. Maybe pick the 20-30 of the most popular ones and have them coded into the chat software? Sorry Gav!

There is currently a dropdown list with a selection of emoticons but having the ability to create one is really nice.

TT is correct, the chat emoticons are available from a pop out window with a few clicks, otherwise the power users can use the short cut keys.
Displaying the help from the chat room is a good idea, I'll add it to my list.

Whatever is said up there at the top applies to the personal chat, black boxes and the public chatroom.

We don't need one, it's an animal free zone in the Chat rooms. The Llama's are to be left at the door.

I hate the to drop-down (you put this as "which user you're addressing" in your diagram, Catnip). I've used IRC for 12 years, so chat is a pretty mouse-free event for me. This cutesy point'n'click stuff seems awkward and slow. I tried using the to control, but I kept forgetting to set it back to "All" before speaking to the channel... er, I mean, "room". The way I'm used to directly addressing someone, without using the mouse, would look like this: stormblue: catnip: hey, i see you changed your chat avatar today But I got told that wasn't good enough. :/ Forgive me, but I need to vent this: since when is expecting someone to look and read in order to understand something in chat asking too much? How can one even have a chat conversation without those skills?? Now, it may just be that one room that had a problem with it; maybe others won't mind if I want to do things a little differently than is the norm. But I have a sneaking suspicion -- since humans are creatures of habit -- that I'm going to run into this again and again if I use the chat rooms. No big deal; I don't need to use them. I'm happy here in the forums. But I do like real-time conversation, too. It has its advantages. So, unless you've got a tip or trick that deals with this, I may just have to stay out of the chat rooms. Oh and by the way, Miss "chat addict", why have I never yet seen you in there? Mmm?

I'm at the moment busy with doing my homework, mr Blue. You do not have to do the drop down, you can easily just click a name in the chat room to address the person. The only way that you can address a person without clicking their name or use the drop down list (unless you want to confuse the whole room, we're sex freaks, we think only what is addressed to us directly is meant for us) is to use the @ command. That on the other hand is not the best thing to do unless you know the person, since it will appear as a personal whisper and people in general tend to get offended or disturbed by it. As you probably have gotten to know our big workbot Gav is busy at the moment, though I am sure that we can flirt him into making an address people without using your mouse easy-peasy code. So chill a few months and keep the good ideas flowing.

It's new. I moved some old relevant posts into it to start things off.
Your posting style is very familiar Ms Baer, have you recently relocated to LA?

This was a really ggod thread until it got all weird and spooky Nevertheless, very useful for those "rare" occasions I am brave enough to venture into the chat rooms. Thanks

This is a tips and trix thread, not a "I think I know you from somewhere" thread. Please contribute or take your thoughts elsewhere.
