A lot of people take vitamins, minerals and other supplements to improve or maintain health. But if they aren't taken correctly, they could be rendered ineffective. For example, someone who takes both calcium and iron supplements — a common recommendation for women of childbearing age — needs to be sure not to take them at the same time, since calcium dramatically decreases the absorption of iron.
