I use the brand name... If you walk into somewhere and ask for a glass of pop they'd look at you like you were a nutter. If you want a coke then you're expected to ask for a coke lol.

If I am ordering a drink, I will specify what I want. If it is just a general convo, then I usually call it pop.

It was 'pop' while I was growing up in Michigan. When my family moved to Florida, servers or clerks looked at me like I was nuts if I called it pop. I learned to call it Coke, Pepsi or soda down here.

Just north of me we call it tonic.

edit... .it's like years ago when people would "Xerox" paper. anything that was copied on any brand of copy machine was considered "Xeroxing". Also, we use the word "Kleenex" for any kind of facial tissue. yep....same thang where i am from too!

I'm from the south. Everything is called Coke. "Hey, want a coke?" "Sure, I'll take one." "Ok, what kind?" "Dr. Pepper" Totally normal conversation in my neck of the woods. When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the loser. Socrates
