Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender. I have a question. It may come across as smart ass or condescending, but it isn't intended that way. I am truly looking to be educated on the matter, since I don't understand. Why is there a distinction between "gay" and "lesbian"? I always thought that "gay" meant homosexual. Cool, no problem. Are lesbians not considered gay? If the aren't, why aren't they? Why is there the subdivision of "gay" and "lesbian"? Please forgive me if this is something I should already know. When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the loser. Socrates

I bet you it's because people in general are hella stupid. Like a girl could probably tell some hick that was dropped on it's head as a child that she is gay and the hick would probably respond "You means yous only goes out with gay fruity guys? Well I'll be damned!". This way if she says lesbian it would make more sense to the more simple minded. Disclaimer: Not saying all hicks are stupid. That's just the example I used here.

I think the main difference is gender. I suppose it's akin to asking why there is a distinction between male and female. As a person to whom labels mean nothing, it all seems too discriminatory to me, correct me if I'm wrong or being ignorant.

I once had a Jamaican friend who insisted that lesbians just needed a case of the right manhood (his). He also felt there was religious damnation due for gay men. Then I learned that only men were called gay because they seem happier then the lesbians who would always be angry at straight men (him). He also insisted that there were no such thing as gay Jamaican (men).
Redneck stereotypes? Jamaican stereotypes? Male stereotypes?
No, just Stupid stereotypes!
He is not my friend anymore.

You seem to be picking me up wrong. The point I'm trying to make is that I don't agree with labelling everything. In fact, I actually agree with your original post, I'm just saying that all the labels seem rather useless. After all, when you say that a woman is a lesbian you know she's gay and vice versa. I think also it may just be convention. I think the term "lesbian" is actually quite a modern phrase and "gay" has been used for a lot longer to describe a homosexual male, so when a woman is described as gay, it somehow doesn't seem right to most people, hence the "need" for a different term for the gay woman.

I agree with you on the aspect of not labeling everything, even with the labeling it can remain confusing. I was reading a post from a bisexual crossdresser confessing that his girlfriend invited her girlfriends over for him to perform a wanking job for their entertainment and his humiliation. I am still confused if a bisexual crossdresser's girlfriend is a girl or another crossdresser; and then the other girlfriends just adds to the confusion... or does it even matter which sex they are?I am sure somebody here has the wise answer...

cause, this way, straight gays are safe to view porn. imagine this scene: Two football stars sitting in their basement. FBS#1: want to jack off together while watching lesbian porn? FBS#2: yeah, totally dude! girl on girl sex is HOT! (pulls out his cock and starts stroking) OR FBS#1: want to jack off together while watching gay porn? FBS#2: Dude! No way. I'm not a homo! Man, now I gotta take a shower! (covers his crotch with a pillow). does that help? :) Bitches in the Basement on Amazon by our own Dancing Doll

It depends on what that person wants to be called, some bisexual or transgendered people call themselves gay. I don't know if for convenience or if that is just what they deem themselves be, I personally think lesbians are gay as well. But as previously mentioned- they called it the LGBT to acknowledge lesbians apart from gay males to make it more unified I suppose. Not entirely sure how that came about... To me this distinction is from older times. Its just like using her or she for a female and He for a male. just a gender distinction and not discriminative in any sence. Well, that how I understand.

It's not gay if balls aren't touching. Or like a song goes "You don't have to be gay to make a friend feel good, ok". So I guess straight gays are two straight dudes getting off together in ways that their balls aren't touching.
An entry for the humour competition! I has it! Now you can read stuff that's like.. all funny and hillarious and amusing!Choking the Blue Snake!!

I thought it was, "it's not gay if it's in a three way. With a girl in the middle there's some lee way."

Sometimes you just follow "common" thought in order to relent to common understanding. Asking, however, is honest and should never be construed as equally rude to assumption. There are things beyond known dialectic and definition. Its just something politicians and ass holes have just not grasped. Oh, sorry, same thing.

I think that as to why men are gay and women are lesbian's we should look at the origin of the words.
Gay, to be gay, used to mean joyful, happy, carefree, and showy. He/She danced Gayly. You look gay today. etc etc. I think it was the late 17th century... maybe 18th, that it started taking on sexual connotations and started to also mean "uninhibited by morals". So for example a "Gay Woman" was a hooker.
Then I believe it was during WW1, or just after that Cary Grant used it in a movie. Something about him dressing up as a woman, and someone asking him about it. He said it was because "he became gay".
As for Lesbian, that goes back to the Greece, and their hedonism. :P the Isle of Lesbos was the home to Sappho. She was a poet, and women were left in her care for teachings and whatnot. She was known to proclaim her love of women. The term Lesbian was used in the 1800's to describe any aspect of of Lesbos. It was also used in medicinal journals to describe "erotic relationships between women".
