Maybe I am misinterpreting but there seems to be an implication in this question that society accepts male masturbation but not female. Personally I have a fantasy of mutual masturbation which I would like to try and have never got around to yet; but I feel reassured by the idea of female masturbation as well as stimulated - a sort of confirmation that my urges are normal and not a matter of shame and beastliness as advocated by religious freaks etc. This started with my mother noticing I had an erection (I was young), and saying "Have you been playing with yourself" instantly I realized that this was considered wrong and denied everything luckily my libido was strong enough to overcome such inhibitions but I hope this illustrates my point and also relates to my earlier post that the British did not have any kind of sex until the 60's.

Cliche, but it depends. While I'm pretty dang comfortable with doing it...I don't feel comfortable talking about it in the RL. I suppose most women do it, but sometimes I still struggle with whether or not I think it fits well with my religious beliefs. Why should this even be a question. Of course it's not and never should have been throughout time. If you feel it's taboo, then take your double standards and join an asexual group in the middle of nowhere. Women have needs as well and don't always have a partner.

I didnt realise it was ever taboo ... absolutely nothing wrong with it as far as I am concerned. As Betheny says above .. women have needs aswell as men.
I would also say, just a perception from threads and posts I have read here since I joined, that women do it more than the men and even if they have a healthy and regular sexual life.

I have absolutely no problem admitting to the fact that I do masturbate, and admitting that I am just as sexual as any man. However, many of my female friends will not admit to it, claim to never have done it, never talk about sex... I think it's sad that they consider masturbation something to be embarrassed by when it is the most natural thing in the world... I guess it's a little bit British to deny the fact that women are sexual beings..

The sale of sex toys is almost a $1 Billion industry. They are sold on home shopping channels on Cable TV. Trojens even advertises them on broadcast TV. So I do not think the taboo stigma of female masturbation is there.
I know you asked women in their 20's. I am 43 and masturbate just about every day (most days more than once). But I know many 20 somethings and they all masturbate and are not ashamed of it.
