The town of Byron Maine is voting on whether each household should be required to own a firearm and ammunition. This law would be unenforceable because Maine law bars municipalities from legislating on firearms.

If we have the freedom to bare arms in the United States that means we also have the freedom not to bare arms if we so choose. People should not be forced to have guns anymore than the people should have their guns taken from them.

This strikes me as a big government intrusion.

Yes, it does. You know, it's only a matter of time before the "jack booted thugs" show up and thrust semi-automatic weapons into your arms. This isn't the land of the free anymore!!

What happens if a town becomes The Wild Wild West? When will rocket launchers be sold under the guise of just being a hunter's best friend? Why does insanity rule? Gun owners are protected by the Constitution. What about the Right To Live?, and not be taken out by some gun toating 'yap' who just bought an Abrams Tank at the gun show. The only thing that should be 'required' is good common sense.

When I was reading the article the only logic I could see behind this requirement was to help law enforcement enforce laws and to show support for the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America.

Now I know when I see Law Enforcement doing its job the best thing I can do to help them is to just stay the hell out of their way.

As far as supporting the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America, I think requiring people to own guns rather takes away our freedom to choose.

Do you share that same feeling as this guy.

Mark E. Kelly, husband to former U.S. Rep. Cabby Giffords and a
supporter of strict gun legislation, made the purchase on Tuesday. Two
days later, Neil McCabe, editor of Guns & Patriots newsletter,
tipped Breitbart News to the purchase with the following email:

Mark E. Kelly, made purchases which included an AR-15–sometimes
described as an “assault rifle”–at 3:30 pm on the afternoon of March 5
at Diamondback Police Supply, 170 S. Kolb Street, Tucson, AZ.

Americans for Responsible Solutions, the gun control political action
committee started by Kelly and Giffords, was contacted by McCabe on
March 6 asking about the purchase. Two days later, the PAC’s officials
told McCabe they would get back with him.
It was only when the media started asking questions that Kelly posted an entry about the purchase on his Facebook page:

I just had a background check a few days ago when I went to my local
gun store to buy a .45. As I was leaving, I noticed a used AR-15. Bought
that too. Even to buy an assault weapon, the background check only
takes a matter of minutes. I don’t have possession of it yet but I’ll be
turning it over to the Tucson PD when I do. "

Caught red faced and red handed, what a POS.

Dude, ask "Gabby" for your balls back, you need them.

Ban the rednecks?
Why not ban anyone who is not your same color?
Ban anyone who disagrees with your philosophy?
Ban the short people?
Ban tall people?
Ban the rednecks? Why not round them up and put them on trains, ship them off to concentration camps and gas them?
Ban the rednecks?

Why not ban the intolerant, self righteous, racist bigots?

End the bigotry and quit trying to classify people and call them ignorant bigoted names!

Ever since I was in the third grade, and decided to be an agnostic because it takes just as much faith to deny God's existence as to afirm it, I have held the opinion that "freedom to" implies and carries with it freedom not to. But what do I know? Obviously I am mistaken in the case of Freedom of Religion. It still says "In God We Trust" on the money, and "under God" was added to the pledge of allegiance, Madeline Murray notwithstanding. If the same logic is extended to firearms, I suppose it could be said that freedom to own guns means a requirement to own them. George Orwell was right: War is peace.

It is crazy and irresponsible for a municipality to pass a law requiring everyone to own a gun. It most likely doesn't pass muster with state laws there anyhow.

I did state in my original post that Maine state law prohibits municipalities from regulating firearms.

Yes Clever I had noticed. And state law usually overrides city laws. But the each state has different laws and their own constitutions. Unless trumped by a Federal law, state laws usually trump laws of municipalities but I could be wrong in some instances. I am not an attorney.

Such a law is way out of bounds. Could be a good case for the ACLU.

Meh. In my opinion, Kelly's a hypocritical asswipe. If his only intention had been to show how easy it was to buy a pistol or rifle, he would have come out of the store directly into a press conference, shouting "Look at what I just did!" He wouldn't have waited until news of his purchase made it across the interwebz a few days later, and half-assedly gone, "Well, yeah, I bought it, but I never was gonna keep it..."

Besides which, if eeevil gunz are so bad that they have to be turned in to the local popo, why isn't he turning in the .45 automatic that he bought at the same time?

Hypocrite. His wife has had him up on stage stumping for a position that he doesn't believe. I have no problem with him purchasing either firearm. He's a fucking astronaut, for God's sake. A hero. If ANYBODY can pass a fucking background check, he can. He just should have been honest about it, instead of being a lying piece of crap.

Me too! I'd love to have an Abrams tank, but damn the gas would cost a fortune. I have shot legal fully automatic machine guns at gun ranges before. Quite a rush. (Gun ranges often have a license to own them and charge patrons to shoot them.) I'd love to shoot a cannon if the opportunity ever avails itself.

The second amendment protects the right of people to keep and bear arms. Rocket launchers are certainly arms. If everybody in town has a gun, I might need a rocket launcher to protect myself. Of course, if people all get rocket launchers, I'll need something bigger, maybe a thermonuclear device.

I just checked and the town of Byron Maine unanimously rejected the proposal to require gun ownership for each household.

I have no problem with Mr Kelley purchasing either gun, but your point is valid, IF he is so against guns why keep the .45 semi-automatic man stopper?

So he bought a 2 k gun just to turn it over to the local police. Free to do as he wishes with his cash.

It's always a plus when people's actions actually match their words. One has to admit this, even when it's inconvenient.

"Looks like the judiciary committee will vote on background checks next week," Kelly wrote, referring to the Senate panel where gun control legislation is up for a vote this week.

"I just had a background check a few days ago when I went to my local gun store to buy a 45. As I was leaving, I noticed a used AR-15. Bought that too."

Looks to me as IF he was doing as others that have bought Millions of guns prior to the OBambam law, grandfathering guns.

There are only so many ways to see it.

1. If what he says is true, and he actually is buying the rifle on behalf of the Tucson PD, then he lied on his form 4473, which is a felony. A case could be made that this would even be a straw purchase, which also a felony.

2. He actually did buy the rifle as part of a PR stunt, but he forgot to actually notify anyone in the media that the PR event was going to take place, which makes him an idiot.

3. He actually was buying the rifle for himself, and got caught. Like a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar, he made up some bullshit cover story to try and absolve himself, which makes him a hypocrite.

I can't think of any other explanations. He's an American hero, so I prefer to think that he's not a felon. He was an astronaut, so I doubt he's an idiot. That only leaves one explanation. Hey- don't get me wrong... I'm glad he's helping to support a sport that I'm so fond of. But he is showing himself to be a hypocrite.

Not only that, but he's showing that the system works. He paid for his purchases, was made to undergo a background check, was found to have a clear criminal history, and was free to take his purchase home once the local waiting period was up. Had he been a convicted criminal, he never would have been allowed to make the purchase. The system works, and doesn't need to be fixed.
