Bad timing to publish story... can we schedule the publishing of our stories?

So you have written a really good story and you have submitted it on LUSH, now the moderators would have to first verify it before publishing and that could take anywhere from ten hours to four days (which I have experienced), and then your story gets publish and shows up on the homepage. But at that time not many people are on LUSH so you don't get reads/scores and comments.
The people who are your friends or following you might read it and score it later but the others won't notice your story because by then a bunch of other stories gets published and your story shifted a page or two behind, and you don't get the response for your story which you might be expecting.

MY EXPERIENCE : I have written some stories which got published at a different time and they got 50+ scored with in 24 hours, and then some stories which I thought that were my one of the best gets published at a different time and I only get 10 to 15 scores.

So for the stories which we think are our best work, can we schedule them by adding a message to the moderator about what time and date we want it to get published? so that they can set our desired time at which we want to show our story on the homepage?

That is something the gold memberships are good for. With those, you get priority processing of your story.

So gold members don't have to wait to get their stories verified and published?

They still have to go through the same process. They get moved to the top of the list I do believe.

this is correct, and we are directed to get them out as quickly as is reasonably possible. This does not mean we will give more leeway or make deep edits. All that remains the same, it simply means you don't wait for 40 other stories first.

Edit: One other thing that anyone can do is completely and thoroughly proofread your work. Correct the grammar and punctuation as per our resources so that we can read it and just hit verify without having to spend added time on it. There are writers who we know from experience consistently provide clean, quality submissions and rarely if ever need to be returned.
Speaking for just myself, if I'm in a rush, and no gold's are waiting, those are the first ones ill take. Otherwise, its just first come, first served.

Absolutely not. No one is guaranteed a time when their story will be posted, even if they are gold members. (Something about those last two words just struck me funny.) If you are a gold member, you will get priority, but that may still get you posted at an inconvenient time in your terms.

In this respect, everyone who submits takes the same risk as to when they will see their story on the front page. It depends on how many moderators are working, how many stories are in the queue, how many are ahead of you, and of course how well your story is written. This assumes it will not get sent back for corrections.

Other sites take days and weeks to process stories. Unless the queue is flooded, and it has been much of the time lately, you should see your story up within 24 hours, barring it being sent back for edits. That is the only time it would take four days for a story to be posted - when it is sent back for edits. Then it depends how quickly the writer gets their story to a standard worthy of being published here. There are often forty stories in the queue and submissions keep coming as we all work, keeping the number steady at 40. Remember this is all volunteer time. A thank you for the work done when your story is posted would be good manners and appreciated.

i think this is a brilliant idea, actually. also, i think it'd be great if you had a set time to submit stuff, lets say a 5 minutes window that we assign you. if you miss it, you have to wait another 24 hours and try again. best of luck, BB. smile

Now the whole time difference thing on the forum makes sense to me. It has all been your long-going nefarious plan to trap us unsuspecting writers into never being able to successfully submit our stories ever again! Hah, admit it!

Why do I feel the urge to ask: "Gee, sprite, what do you want to do tonight?"

Are beatings reserved for moderators?

nope - i'm perfectly happy to administer beatings to whomever. that said, for mods, it's a perk. for anyone else, it'll cost you. (btw, i'm more Pinky, than the Brain ).

In my experience, really good quality stories get read and voted on, no matter what time of day they're published. The best authors of this site never slip through the net.

If you want to guarantee a substantial readership, hone your skills and write the kind of stories that will earn Recommended Read and Editors' Pick awards. In general, get yourself seen here on Lush: make friends, be active in forums, become someone whose stories people want to read.

Lush has one of the fastest story processing turnaround times of any similar site, and the behind-the-scenes team work very hard to maintain that reputation.

There's also a logical oversight to your argument. The times when most users are on Lush are likely the times when there are most moderators on Lush and therefore the times when most stories are being processed. Therefore, at those times, your story is likely to spend even less time on the front page. So I don't think the time of day has as big an impact on story views/votes as you might think.

There are nearly quarter of a million members on Lush and a lot of them write stories.

If more than 15 of those users (the same number of stories that is displayed on the front page) have a story verified and also have the same time as you set (also allowing for time zone adjustment), all those stories would hit the site at once.

In that case, it is quite feasible that your story would never actually see the front page of the website, but get buried somewhere on page two.

Not a good idea.

May I just add that the moderators are not paid, we are all volunteers. We also have lives that sometimes keep us away from Lush for longer periods than we'd like. We are also all over the world, not just in the US. We do the best we can to get stories read and approved as quickly as possible, but often we must send a story back for some "repair" work that needs to be done by the author.

Sprite might be our personal punisher (and aren't we all so lucky for that) but we all do our parts. There are genres that some of us aren't comfortable reading and some that some love to read. Bottom line is this... we are a TEAM. We work hard both on & off Lush. We have families, jobs, and lives. I'm not saying we're perfect, but when you compare to "other" erotic literature sites, the story turn-around here at Lush is rather quick. So, before you throw stones at those of us who do this job, you'd best have your fact straight.

Oh yeah... and in regards to stories needing to be on the "Home Page", today I got comments & votes on 3 different stories, one that has been on this site for over a year. Clum and I agree that good quality stories get read. I get messages from people reading my older pieces often. I'm not saying I'm the greatest writer... but I must have done something right.

@ milik and clum: good posts with sensible advice for all readers.

I personally try not to take advantage of the 'fast tracking' system Gold membership brings, because soon after I joined I thought: "This is such a brilliant site, which must cost a lot to keep on the road" - so I made a donation. And will do so again.

I love that, Liz. Buried on page two, a shallow grave, lol.
Personally I was happy just to have mine passed for publishing.
Before I was a member, I would go to the category that I wanted. I never looked at the "front page" and I think most readers do the same.

Jimmy Buffet had a song "Its 5 O'clock Somewhere" ... Applying the philosophy of that song to the time of day question it seems like it would be a good way to get a following of readers from all over the world. My poor scribblings have received kind remarks from folk all over and I'm humbled by it. Therefore the time of day for publishing is kinda / sorta a moot point.wtLVk4Az1IXgkjg0

Chrissielecker...you need to be careful around Miss Sprite and not trifle with her. She might be a little "sprite", but she can be very ferocious and she can and will bite! You'll do well to give her plenty of room. Don't ask me how I know

Let me take this time to publicly thank ALL the Lush moderators for the hours of dedicated work they do. (My remarks apply to the Stories Space group also as some of LUSH moderators are also over there)

Thank you, Asleep. I think that there is a misconception out there that moderating is a paid job. It is not, as NW explained. It would be nice to see more thank yous from members as they receive notice that their story has been posted. Now that I think about it, a thank you should be forthcoming for taking the time to list all of the edits needed, advice as to how to do that, and providing links for related resources that come with a rejection instead of the angry responses we occasionally receive. Every story moderator is willing to answer questions to help that process as well.

It is more difficult to read a badly written story and figure out what has to be fixed and how that should be done. We receive stories that have to go back three or four times for corrections, so that can take four days or even longer when the writer either cannot or will not bring their story to a standard worthy of publication here. The moderating team has worked over the past couple of years to make this the most literate erotica site available. It is not "just porn" or "just smut". The stories here are worth reading for precisely that reason. If it were "just porn", many writers and moderators would not be here.

In the end, how long it takes to publish is really up to the writer and the amount of work they put into their story. Let's call that sweat equity. The more you put in, the better your story, and the more likely it is to be posted without delay.

Thank you to those who have expressed their appreciation for what we do. Perhaps this thread has explained what a difficult job it is for others who were unaware.

And big, big thanks to all the mods, one truly can't say it often enough. There's a reason we're all hanging out here to write and read and not somewhere else. Lush wouldn't be this brilliant place without you and all the time, work and nerves you put into helping us turn our scribbling into something worth sharing.

But shouldn't one always be nice and to cuddle with people with sharp fangs? I've been doing that ever since grandma read me the story of snowred and the seven wolves, in hopes that I might get kissed awake by that girl with the long hair, rhubarb I think? And I don't fear flamethrowers when there's enough moisture around. Ooops. Did I write that out loud? *blushes prettily*

Thank you.

I sometimes think the newer members don't really understand just how much time and effort we put into our work here. Work we do because we believe all of you should have a place where you can read top quality erotica. We all rely on the readers who pass through this site to provide a purpose for our efforts. I believe most writers we deal with understand that the corrections we ask for only help ensure that their work is presented in the best possible light. These are your stories, written for the pleasure of the reader. Our belief is that giving you that extra set of eyes to seek out mistakes before its read will only enhance the experience the reader gets from your work.

As mentioned by above, we have offered our time as moderators for free. I do it because I believe this site has something special to offer that is worthy of my efforts. I spend a significant amount of my available time doing this, time I could be spending writing my own work. Considering it takes me weeks to write a single story at the quality I insist on from myself, being a mod does become a significant drain. That's how much I believe in it though.

So please, spend those extra few minutes proofreading and ensuring that your stories are ready to publish before submitting them. Doing so will not only help others, but it will get your story out on the front page much more quickly. Believe me, that's a goal we all share.
