Post words, phrases or sentences that make you cringe

I'd "gotten" this thread idea a short while ago.

"women" used as the singular, referring to one woman. I see this frequently, and don't know when that started, but it is really annoying.

well, ACTUALLY, my current pet peeve is, "actually." It's bad enough in written English, but is approaching epidemic proportions in verbal conversations.

I butcher the English language daily which is why I really don’t have any pet peeves when it comes to how you use the words and how you spell them. “Text” talk does piss me off!

So if you’re thinking of starting up a conversation with me – don’t start it off as Hi how r u… You’ll be X’ed out immediately.

1. you - is both singular and plural, there is no such thing as "yous"
2. there, their, and they're - all have different meanings and are not interchangeable. When used incorrectly, the sentence loses meaning.
3. your and you're - same as number 2 above.

It's funny, but I just read something not too long ago where they did a national pole to find out what word people find most annoying...the winner??? "Whatever"...after I read that I started putting it in my story tags...I figure somebody's going to click on it out of curiousity...whatever...

Pole, something that can be used to dance with. Poll: something that is like a survey. Laughing out loud, otherwise known as LOL, which incurs the ire of people who don't like Inglitch barstadized.

What-the-fuck-ever.

I agree with Nic - GOT
I cringe when anyone uses that word - especially my children (I always asked them to find other words, and now they rarely say "got") not to mention sportscasters, anyone in the news and journalists speaking on American TV. Sounds to be such slang.

unfortunately - it appears in the dictionary now ....

"You are" is contracted to "you're", not "your"

"It is" contracts to "it's". The possesive "its" never, ever has an apostrophe.

The French word "voila", meaning "there it is!" is spelled voila, not viola. A viola is a musical instrument, or a girl's name if you're reading Twelfth Night.

However one of my personal downfalls are the words that French and English share with slight variations in the spelling, because I cannot remember the differences in spelling between one language and the other. "Rince" or "rinse"?????
