Topic How long should a paragraph be?
Posted 13 Sep 2013 06:27

I feel a paragraph's length should depend on the subject under description and this has nothing to do with how many lines is acceptable to negotiate by the reader. Also each paragraph should have a sentence that leads into the next paragraph when the subject or scenario is changing.

I was just recovering from a liaison with my lover in Washington CD, UK. I was horrified however:-

Total number of people who died in the 9/11 attacks
2,996

Iraqi Civilians Killed, Estimated - On October 22, 2010, ABC News reported "a secret U.S. government tally that puts the Iraqi (civilian) death toll over 100,000," information that was included in more than 400,000 military documents released by Wikileaks.com.

The attacks were tragic however the above also gives food for thought too.

Oh another example of weapons of mass destruction - I'm still waiting for the first lot to be uncovered. Of course there couldn't be a hidden agenda at work here? No danger to the flow of traffic along the motor ways? Besides you're just as dead if killed by a machine gun wielded by a nice soldier from the UK or the US who is saving you from yourself or a high explosive bomb landing on the village but dropped by a philanthropic airman with your welfare totally to heart. (why doesn't that qualify as a weapon of mass destruction or chemical warfare?). You can really understand why this guy got the peace prize so well deserved. Yes he should join young Harry who ''takes a life to save a life'' and is good at shooting terrorists in Afghanistan because he's skillful on his Sony Play Station.

Topic "Cunt" course word? crude word? exciting word?
Posted 12 Sep 2013 09:48

I suppose because it has a taboo aspect - using this word does have a titillating quality, but this also brings to mind the use of ambiguity as all speech is arbitrary. I often ponder why certain words are socially acceptable whilst others that are really synonymous don't. People might find a conversation a little startling if you were discussing penis's and vagina's but they wouldn't find the words themselves upsetting. They mightn't even be all that upset if you said ''go and have sex with yourself'', or ''go away whilst having sex'' or ''you are an anal aperture'' etc. :) It can also be noted that there is no noun for a sexual experience except the socially unacceptable fuck eg ''we had a fuck'' the nearest in the acceptable sense is ''we had a sexual experience'' but this involves 2 words. It's as though our puritanically minded forebears thought sex such a taboo subject that there would be no noun unless it was treated as a dirty word. I mean there was a time (unfortunately in my living memory) where the adjective ''unmentionable'' was turned into a noun so that ladies' underwear could be referred to as her ''unmentionables'' (something so bad to mention that we have a euphemism that states that - but we're still making the reference anyway so why bother? - which was really weird)

The reason I ask is because you said you found the gun issue "ridiculous". Yet, the only thing ridiculous about the issue in America is the ridiculous amount of people that die daily due to gun violence. With that morsel of truth, I don't even need to get into the other ways guns assist crime in our country.

An excerpt from a Huffington Post article says,

If Americans misbehaved on Jan. 15, 2013, as they typically do, then there were 30 gun-related murders and 162 people wounded by firearms in the country, based on the most recent figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. On top of that, another 53 people kill themselves with a firearm each day, according to the CDC.

Breaking it down further, three people are killed by a gun per hour and almost seven people are shot every 60 minutes.

While it's worth noting that the vast majority of gun owners are law abiding, the cold, hard numbers about deaths and injuries due to guns seem equally noteworthy. Guns were used in 11,422 homicides and 19,392 suicides in 2010, according to the CDC, and were used either intentionally or accidentally to wound 59,208 people in 2011.

Here is a link to that article, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/16/murders-shootings-and-gun-sales-per-day_n_2488664.html.

Facts are fact. The truth is ugly.

I understand why you questioned my word of 'ridiculous' in this when you compare that description to the cold reality of US deaths by guns. But I meant it in the context that there shouldn't even be a debate about owning a machine gun - it's so obvious to me that nobody should be allowed to own such a weapon. (I don't feel private individuals should even own a handbag gun so a machine gun as I've said borders on the comic - except of course it can mean serious death.) Your statistics tell me that the easy availability of the weapon has to be a contributary factor to the deaths. I think it also relates to our impatience as a society - that is the desire for quick solutions to all problems but in this case I feel it exacerbates in the long term rather than cures in the short term.

However, I have gone on a web site and my interpretation of the statistics for gun death in the Czech Republic is as follows. There were 1.51 deaths per 100,000 of the population. 0.12 were homicides and 1.39 were suicides I estimate the population to be about 5,000,000 so that according to my very likely dodgy arithmetic works out at 6 murders and 69.5 suicides for 2010. I know people go hunting in this country so firearms must be available to some extent. In the UK where guns are a taboo item the figure is lower even though the population is higher. For every 100,000 people there have been 0.25 gun deaths overall which works out at 0.04 murders and 0.18 suicides. I think these figures speak for themselves. The population of the UK is about 62,000,000 multiply that and trusting my lousy math means approximately 25 murders and 111 suicides annually, (not every damn hour or so Jesus!).

Are you in the Czech Republic or do you reside in America? If you are in the Czech Republic, does your country have the same statistics of death by gun violence or crime assisted with guns as America experiences? Does the Czech Republic Constitution allow for citizens to arm themselves?

I'm in the Czech Republic and have to check on the question you asked as I'm not aware of the statistics or the ruling on arms. However just off the top of my head and going by local news - gun violence I feel is quite rare - I've never seen a news headline thus related. In fact I think violence in most forms is the same. I'm not too keen on standing near cops as they are carrying guns which I don't agree with - nevertheless I've never seen a policeman actually holding a gun on anybody. I've seen one shop lifter arrested, and 2 derelicts fighting in the metro for about 3 minutes as they stopped and then resumed their walk together. This is the total amount of incidents I've seen and I've lived here about 4 years. Of course we're talking about a place that had a revolution because they didn't agree with the government and wait for it did they get their hidden guns out or even pitch forks ....Oh amazing they had a revolution without killing anybody or even threatening them with a gun - how naive of them didn't they know the right way to do it???

I'm sorry I find this whole gun thing totally ridiculous. This 2nd Amendment thingy where the population have guns so they don't have to use pitchforks etc to attack the government because the government itself has voted in a law to make it a fair gunfight (which is the way the above posts came across to me) seems rather paradoxical and surely unnecessary anyway in a country that can vote out a government it's not happy with. Unless of course there is some mysterious part of the US Constitution whereby a totalitarian government can be elected and therefore bring in draconian measures that need to be rebelled against. MMM Maybe that was the case in the past but really only applied to the indigenous population.

If this debate didn't involve death it would be a joke. To most of the western world owning a machine gun as a private individual is so outrageous it borders on the comic. Like Monty Python's gangs of delinquent old ladies it's so over the top it's funny like a scene from Some Like It Hot. And all these crazy reasons for owning one - the usual emotive ''defending my family from crazed maniacs'' etc are ludicrous. People are probably more likely to have their kids drown in the neighbours' swimming pool than get shot by a gun wielding delinquent. What's the next step your own private tank or armoured personnel carrier?

Why would that be relevant? Guns don't start violence and the people who bear them don't necessarily start violence. Guns generally make one more prepared for violence and to respond to violence than being unarmed.

But you've brought up the issue of starting violence. When does violence start? Is it when the person comes at you with a baseball bat or when you respond to that by shooting him? Do you have to wait for him to hit you before you can justify self-defense?

Their function is violence and nothing else - don't give me that crap about target practice. Your example of the baseball bat is obviously the start of violence but I refer you to my example of the motor car. I am still willing to take the chance and if everybody thought like me the world would be a better place. And to that end I have to have the strength of my convictions and not react like some kid in the playground who hits out to get their own way but take a chance on the baseball bat, the motor car, the tyre iron, the knife, the cricket bat, or whatever nasty implement the immature person is willing to attack me with. Let's face it there are situations where no matter how many guns I have I will be defeated so the fail safe idea is also up for grabs. Actually if someone in the UK attacked me with a baseball bat I would have to justify the grounds of whatever means I used to stop him the law says I can use just enough violence to adequately defend myself and shooting him with a gun would not be taken as justifiable. Grow up - westerns make fun viewing but that's it. Woa Trigger.
