Costa Rica through after a penalty shoot out. I thought the match was scrappy.
I don't think they'll go much further.

I agree Mexico were awesome. Their biggest mistake was allowing Netherlands back into the game by defending their one nil lead. Out of the last 16 games played thus far,the team that impressed me most is Colombia.

Laura: They're not in it!

Me: Whatdya mean, they aren't in it?!

Laura: They didn't qualify, dum dum

Me: What do you mean they didn't qualify?!

Laura: It's not every team in the world, this is the final stages of a knockout process. The Czechs didn't make it.

Me: Bum!

I have no idea who's going to win, but I want USA to win for my friend Buz

Mexico have shown how difficult they are to score against. Their match against the Dutch scoring machine should be interesting.

Agree, best game of the last 16 IMO.

France has really impressed me compared to what they did last world cup. On a good day they can beat any team. For the first time in long there's a sense of togetherness in the team, hence the dismissal of Nasri from the squad. Belgium is severely overrated and the only way I can imagine them reaching the quarter finals is if they meet the US(who after 70 minutes against a good team have proven that they have a long way to go before they reach their level). They're in the weakest group and haven't really impressed at all.

I'd give Chile good chances to take out Brazil, simply because their workrate in defense is immense. They simply forced Spain to play boring and could very well do the same to Brazil. Brazil haven't been all that impressive defensively and the Cameroon win aside they haven't impressed attacking wise either. I understand perfectly Scolari when he says he'd rather take Netherlands, simply because Netherlands haven't impressed defensive wise.

The team that has impressed me the most is Germany. And since I support them you can be damn sure that they won't win the world cup.

France have been quietly doing their job . Brazil haven't yet impressed me also, so chile could beat them, but I doubt that will happen. Germany should be peeking at this World Cup, but also haven't really impressed me that much. Agree the Dutch defense is suspect. This has been a weird World Cup, I'm still not sure who can win it, but although I'm not 100% convinced they will win it, I'm going for the hosts to win it Brazil.

Chile, if they can keep the ball better than they did against Holland and learn how to mark a runner, could go far. Their upcoming match against a still not firing on all cylinders Brazil could be very interesting. We have a potential match between Belgium and the USA in round two which will be extremely interesting. The Americans work-rate could stifle the Belgians midfield creativity, if there was a match that I thought would go to penalties, it's that one.

Do other people think that England can now be classed as underdogs? They have only won one world cup and haven't had a fully competitive squad since 2002. England have been atrocious this year. There defence has suffered the same problem as Spain, in having two good central defenders but no leader as they have in the past (Carlos Puyol, John Terry, Manuel Sanchis, Bobby Moore, etc, etc). Also England were seriously lacking a playef who could effectively link defence and attack. Wayne Rooney kept dropping deep to fill this gap but then wasn't where he should have been in the number 10 hole. Do England have any truely

world class players any more? (I don't consider Rooney world class unless he plays as an out and out centre forward, where he is most effective).

What do people think?

England haven't been world class for years....they have some good youngsters coming through like Stirling, Wilshire etc. it's going to take years for England to be a force again. Enjoy the WC, some good games in last 16

Unfortunate that they didn't manage to hold on against Portugal. They are still in a good position to progress.

Yes they are.

The problem with giant killers is that there are only so many giants that they can kill before they get killed. If you look at the wall charts available they all seem to show who might play who, depending on whether they finish 1st or 2nd in the group.
So by now if anyone is bothered enough to examine any of the wall charts showing the results so far, then you will have a rough idea or at least some idea of who may play who in the first knockout phase.

Brazil have home advantage and although they haven't played well in this tournament so far I did say that it will be a Brazil Vs Argentina final, or at least that is the written script as they cannot meet one another until the final. I'll wait and see how Brazil do in their final group game first.

Other than that the European teams - Germany, Holland, Belgium and France are performing well as are the south Americans of Chile and Colombia, and the central American teams of Costa Rica and Mexico.

Too tight to call for me really.

Indeed.

This World Cup has really been interesting i.e. Some real surprise results and lots of goals.
