Topic Tips for dealing with a rejected story.

Word is alright for spelling, but it doesn't always pick up grammatical errors. For example: I was touching her waste with my tapped fingers.
If you were trying to write : I was touching her waist with my tapered fingers. Word isn't going to pick up anything wrong with that sentence, technically the spelling is correct, but the message isn't. That's why we always encourage people to read the links provided and proofread.

Thanks, but it's working now. It was "Through the Armored Sieve" by Metilda.
Looks like it was recently modified so it had to be re-verified before you could see it again.

I would like to be able to see which moderator recomended a story for a Recomended Read Award and the reason why the story is a Recomended Read.
I also think it would be nice to be able to see why a story was Given an Editor's Pick award.
This way I could tell if it is a story that would interest me.
This has already been discussed and decided on.

*blushes* ok, apparently i'm the expert on tentacle sex, according to OWA, so here is my stance on it, and it's possibly in contradiction to all our other guidelines but, as she said, tentacle sex issues will probably be passed on to me.
Hey! I edited that 5 seconds later and unnamed you
, wasn't sure if you'd want that floating around. But yeah, tentacles are tricky

I always appreciate a good pun! :D
Anyway, so tentacles is the only exception? Like, if I were to write a story about a were-octopus (which I totally, totally might now that I'm thinking about it (seriously, wtf is wrong with my brain)) whose lower body was that of an octopus', that would be allowed?
The whole knotting thing is one of the best aspects of werewolf smut, so I'm trying to understand why this in particular isn't allowed. (I was totally one of those annoying kids in class who was constantly asking "why", by the way. Apparently you just don't grow out of some things. Though, I'm pretty sure most of my teachers would be horrified if they knew where my curiosity lead to these days...and I'm digressing =p)
The naughty bits have to be humanoid, tentacles are an exception because. .. I'll have to find a certain mod who shall remain unnamed and ask her, she's our resident tentacle expert, so if you sent a story with tentacles in, we'd probably consult her.
The knots wouldn't be allowed because humans don't have knots, that's unique to canines. Also, real octopi/tentacles resembling octopus limbs aren't allowed because they have those sucker things which humans don't. Picture smooth and humanoid.

Sorry, yeah. Like I said before, characters should have human sex organs. Totally blanked on that part; thanks, OWA.
To paraphrase you, no apologies necessary
I only knew that cuz I have twisted friends.

I swear I don't mean to be a hardass, but can I ask why? I mean, I know tentacles are allowed as long as it's not an actual octopus/squid having the sex, so why not, say, excess hair, pointy ears, and a knot on a werewolf?
I quite agree with Clum, with just one addition, to my understanding the knot issue is unique to canines so if it can be left out of the story, I would advise not putting that part in. Pun not intended

Reading the posts, I agree that the guidelines are at best "soft", there is no clear list of no/yes in sexual behavior, frankly, all BDSM can be dangerous if the Dom. is an idiot. Unprotected sex is dangerous if one party has an STD....
Incest storoes are wildly popular, and allowed, even though the psychologiacl implications of such acts are WAY beyond "Dangerous".
I have had a few stories rejected, and been threatened with bahishment if I again break the rules, even though there are no apparent CLEAR rules for "Dangerous behavior". Why not a check list?
A type sex- no
B type sex-Yes,
Easy, No?
That way everyone is on the same page.
I know that the moderators try their best, but there does not seem to be even a uniform application of rules from one to another... rule by committee never works.
I would love to help come up with a cohesive list and set of rules, if I can assist.

What you're telling me is that the fact that the character was not molested and not forced to have sex doesn't matter. Any story where a character is rendered helpless, however temporarily and harmlessly, is forbidden. Should we throw out any plot where a character is arrested by police or rescued from a cult by deprogrammers or simply forced to show up where they will be given an important choice?
I contacted the verifiers. I wanted the main character to wake up in a serious jam with no foreknowledge of how she got there. To then be given a choice to cooperate or leave from a situation where there would be no rape, no molestation, no physical damage and no sex with another person. Shot down.
From reading Lisa's post, you conveniently left out the fact that the character was drugged which is a direct violation of the rules. Considering the fact that you were privately discussing this with a senior moderator, I don't see the need to continue this discussion with people who don't know the facts about your story. After your situation is resolved, if there is a change in the guidelines, I'd be happy to read that, but for now, I think you'd be better off discussing this with someone who has full knowledge of all the details of your story as well as a concrete knowledge of the guidelines so that there are no misunderstandings.

Can that possibly be any squishier? I wrote a story within the guidelines and it seemed to me the guidelines were ignored and the story was excluded. There was no non-consensual sex. The only consensual sex for that character, after being 'taken' prior to giving consent and then given the freedom to leave , was masturbation by the character. She was undressed but also unmolested . I can't speak for other writers, but I'm not going to get my stories blessed before they're written. I'm going to try to write to the guidelines, but I'm not going to write boring crap just because a guideline might be ignored and a story might arbitrarily be excluded because it got too close to the edge.
I don't see how the rule is squishy. I didn't read your story, so I don't know the details of what you're talking about, but if you felt that your story wasn't handled as it should have been, you're always free to contact the verifier who read it, we're all reasonable people. If it really is passable, it would probably be re-read.
Also, the guidelines are there for a reason, I don't see the need for a story to contain any of the things that we don't allow. Speaking for myself, kidnapping is not a turn on.

And since we're discussing this at all, I've also been playing with the idea of writing a story where an established couple acts out a rape fantasy. The fact that it's a roleplay (and consent has been given) will be clearly emphasized at the beginning of the story, but the sex will be incredibly rough and demeaning to the submissive. Moreover, no safe word will be used-- and this is a mutual decision by both characters-- so the sex will, for all intents and purposes, come across as rape. It just, y'know, won't be, and at the end the couple will be fine.
Will I be allowed to submit something like that?
The lack of safe word will only be fine if nobody says, stop or no, or tries to put and end to the roleplay at any point. The rest of it sounds ok.

Strong feelings about a character being abducted or hypnotized and not forced to have sex? Why?
If you have a specific question concerning a guideline, feel free to ask it and someone who knows the answer would probably be glad to respond.
As for mind control, we allow stories involving people taking drugs etc, however, anything that would affect how a character normally behaves and is administered or caused by something/someone else (e.g mind control/hypnosis) isn't allowed. This applies to situations both involving and leading up to the sex.

I don't understand what the big issue is... Once I had a girl leave me because of the fact that I love screamo music. I don't understand. I don't care about what my lover listens to—if they like it, they like it. Why is it such a big deal to some people?
Did you have it constantly playing while you two were together? What levels did you play it at? Maybe there were other reasons and she didn't feel like listing them all.

I do try to remember to send a thank you note when accepted. It's only polite. Still trying to figure out how to stuff enough cash in that little note envelope though.
I like your thank-you's you're one of my favorite authors to deal with because of how pleasant you are. *gives you my nice person stamp of approval*

I didn't say anything was wrong with it. I was just wondering why that member thought that was a good idea, or why it would be useful.
I am able to see who recommended a particular story, and usually that moderator will have left a comment on the story. However, none of that usually has any bearing on whether or not I read the story.
It's like you're asking moderators to justify their actions and I don't really see why they should do that, but am happy to listen to your views on the matter.
Also, I'm happy to give a full list of all the stories that I personally recommended.
Quite right, we have nothing to hide, but I don't see it as a necessity.

I'm saying that if I read stories that you recommend and I find them to be not exceptional (IN MY OPINION) I'd probably be less inclined to follow your recommendation in future. If on the other hand I read them and liked them I'd be more inclined to think "Oh wow, OWA recommends it, she generally likes the stuff I do". You could even extend it so readers could follow individual mods recommendations in the same way that we can follow authors.
Good writing isn't solely about content and categories: some authors prefer long, sweeping, intricate plot-lines others have a poetic, adjective-heavy style - both of which i can take or leave but I can respect that other people may love that stuff - including mods.
You have a point there, but it still could go the other way and a good story shouldn't be passed up because someone doesn't like the taste of the person who recommended it, or the person themselves. We've had issues in the past where a mod rejects a story and that author gets mad and gives the mod's story low scores. I wouldn't want for that to extend beyond my stories and for them to be able to go to the RR section and attack stories that I've recommended.
The award is about encouraging readership, the fact that a story is in the RR section means that it's exceptional. To me, who recommended it shouldn't matter to anyone except the person who received it.
