Topic Intelligence is overrated? IQ trumped by EQ, MQ, and BQ.
Posted 20 Jun 2012 09:47

I agree that intelligence is not a guarantor of success in life. EQ and MQ are necessary components of a decent human being. Intelligence without these could be sociopathy. However, let us not contribute to the general anti-intellectualism in society by saying that intelligence is unimportant. IQ is not its only measure, but surely the general dumbing down we are seeing is not a good thing.

I recently saw something on television about young men falling behind young women on every measure of success. Part of it was attributed to their considering reading to be unmanly.

What we all need to be is decent, bright, inquisitive and well-rounded human beings. Ignorance has no redeeming value.

Now that we have the ability to sort messages into folders, it would be helpful to do so several at once as with deletions rather than having to do them one by one. I am certain that we all have a lot of them to file.

Topic Interest in You v. Your Writing
Posted 18 Jun 2012 11:47

I think that writing is an avenue for creative expression. My poetry comes from real emotions, but they may be remembered rather than current ones. The prose that I have written with Alphamagus comes from experience, imagination and fantasy and is therefore different than the poetry. The restaurant story is set in one that I like very much, for example.

I think in general writing must have some piece of you in it to be authentic, but it need not be autobiographical. It can tell in a story some insight that you have come to about the human condition with characters other than yourself.

I cherish my privacy (and anonymity on Lush) and do not share my intimate self or emotions with the world. For me that is unseemly and indiscreet, but we must each do what is comfortable for us.

I know that the poems have helped expiate some emotions for me and that has been very healthy. The stories are fun to write, perhaps because my writing partner makes it such a pleasure and they are intended to be playful as well as sexy and romantic.

The whole real me will never be on view on Lush.

Topic What says Summer to you?

PIMMS, strawberries and cream, smoked salmon, the sound of leather on willow, cut grass, thunder storms and rain, the mad dash for cover, the sweet smell after the rain

I love these.

Bare legs, breezy linen clothing, wild curly summer hair (no point straightening it in the humidity), and long summer evenings eating and drinking at outdoor patios. Invitations on friends' cruiser out on the lake. Somehow summer is the sexiest season of the year.

I agree. Parents who want their children to get a religious education should send them to religious schools, whatever the creed or denomination. The US is not a Christian country any more than most other countries in the developed world. They are all diverse and becoming more so. Church and state are separated constitutionally in most places for a good reason. Freedom is not to have religious instruction imposed in school or as the default mechanism in a society. Freedom of religion includes freedom from religion, if that is your choice.

If you want an example of how a theocracy works, look at Iran and how it adheres to democratic principles.

Only site I've seen it on is facebook, and then they only have a like button and it's for lazy people. I don't think many people would want this place turning into a facebook like place. *Shivers at the thought*

"The New York Times" has a "recommend" button with a thumbs up symbol in its comments sections attached to articles. I don't think we need it here. If you have an opiinon about a subject, it is not difficult to write a line or two.

Why do some people imagine themselves to be endlessly interesting - as if we are fascinated by their every thought and feeling? Is there no thought that can remain unexpressed? Is there no situation, no matter it impacts those involved, where its effect on them must not be announced and commiserated with? You are really not that important or interesting. Not funny or intelligent. Just narcissistic and attention-seeking.
