ok, this has been eating my brain a bit today, the subject i mean - first off, i don't think there's a right or wrong answer - everyone's going to sort of have their own opinion, and that's perfect - i really just wanted to hear them, see if they change my thoughts, make me think about why i might have one point of veiw over another, get exposed to ways of thinking i'd never considered...

now, suddenly, in the shower of all places, i'm struck with a thought - art vs. craft. it started thinking about photography - after all, to some extent, isn't it all about knowing which camera to buy, settings to use, lenes, etc - these are all things that you can be taught, like any craft - be it driving a car or programing a computer. So, why is it that someone can come along and take incredible photos and someone else takes pictures that are mundane? somehow, they are able to see things the other person can't see? is it intuition? craft? a feeling? an artistic eye?

and that's when it all went to hell... you could say the same about Renoir or Miro or Degas - did they simply learn their craft? years and years of practice taught them which brush to use, how to appliy the stroke, which colors to use? is what we call artistic genius, merely incredidble craftmanship?

when we hear Debussy's Preludes, is it the music written down that moves us, or the performance of the musicians? can't an argument be made that both are merely the result of craft? the musicians learing how to play the notes on the paper while the composer learned what chords would make the most pleasing sequence? certainly, he didn't just pick up a pen and write music without any formal training. craftmenship must have played a major part - so, when we hear a recording, who is the artist? it stand to reason that some recordings are better then othres - the muscians are to praise or blame? the director?

so, by this, can't we say that the artist with no training is the true artist? those who create without having learned the proper craft are somehow better then those fettered by technique and knoweldge?

yeah, it's twisting my brain as well... LMB said 'i know it when i see it' but then, i can imagine standing next to her and saying 'hey, this is art' to which she replies 'are you crazy or blind?'

oh, and there was the comment that porn can't be art, and i am racking my brain, recalling certain directos of porn who did more then shoot straight to video - they had a style, it was artistic, and i have to think that in their mind, they were elevating the medium to art... Alex DeRenzy and the Dark Brothers (thank you Google) are examples of such.

somethings, however, even i can't validate as art... but then, i think... great chefs create art as well, and even those of us who simply cook, create something? is it art? what if it's just about intentions? it's art because that was how we intended it?

What about art that makes you think, rather then feel? or art that feeds negative emotions, such as anger - it can even do it in sublte ways - i went to an art exhibit - one of the peices was a purple slab - no texture, no shades, pure purple - my partner hated it so much that we spent 45 minutes discussing why it wasn't art and, at some point, i began to wonder if perhaps that was the point? to make us think about what art was, to feel something about it, to draw out those emotions, just as intense as the awe one feels when confronted with the actual Night Watch, or when someone hears Ode to Joy - so perhaps, it's sole purpose was to inspire that journey, that discussion? in that, perhaps it achieved making us both think and feel? in the end, we were divided - i called it art, for those very reason, and she thought otherwise, her argument was that it was merely pretensious BS for eggheads to sit around and feel superior while they discussed why the common veiwer 'just didn't get it' - who was right, or were we both right?

what is art? it's a good question. what makes something art? yes, somethings are obvious - oil paintins by Van Gogh, Rodin's sculptures, Shakespeare's works, Michael Angelo, great Ballet, Mozart, Ansel Adams. But the, there is the less obvious. Pollack, Mapelthorpe, J. Cameron, Graffite artists, Eminem... why do we looks at some things and instantly recognize them as art, and other things and break out in heated discussion? what is it about a blank canvas with a single splotch of black paint that identifies it as art, or not art? is it the artist's intent? is it what thoughts or ideas or emotions it brings out in the veiwer? are popular movies or music art? what about porn or erotica? Ballet is, but what about the art of pole dancing? is there a right or wrong answer?

just thought i'd give everyone something to think about besides politics and religion - we have some truly great artists here, not only writers, but dancers, painters, photographers, and everyone has opinions. let's hear them.
