The cute, faint little noise she makes every time she breathes out. How am I supposed to sleep?
It was 12:42AM, my eyes were heavy with tiredness, and all I could do was softly stroke my sister's beautiful blond hair. Her legs wrapped around mine under the blanket made it feel like a forest fire under there, but I didn't want to move. That would just wake her up, and that's the last thing I wanted to do.
Although I couldn't sleep at night, it was certainly my favourite part of the day. The feeling of her lying next to me, her head on my chest and arm around my waist made me feel like I was the greatest man alive. I have to thank our horrible mother and father for our new relationship. If it wasn't for their constant fighting every time they came home from work, we wouldn't be so close. The yelling and screaming usually stops around 10PM and by the end, the tears from my sister's eyes would dry out and she would fall asleep. Every night was the same except for Saturdays and Sundays, but I made sure me and my sister were out of the house most of the day. Sometimes I think our parents forget they have children. But I don't care any more, I have Serenity.
"Serenity, wake up," I said, moving the hair from her eyes and rubbing the hand that was on my chest.
She mumbled and groaned, trying her best to open her eyes.
"Maybe this will wake you up."
I gently pulled her head to me and gave her a long kiss on the lips; I felt her smile as I did.
"I'm wide awake now!" she whispered into my lips.
I could feel her warm breath on my face. Her breath smelled good even in the morning; I couldn't say the same for me.
"Is Dad gone?" she said, looking at me with her sparkly light-blue eyes and rubbing my cheek with her soft hand.
I held her hand to my face and said, "I heard him leave. Mom is still asleep."
I pulled her hand to my side and got up a little bit. "Get ready for school, love."
"I love you, K."
"I know you do sweet-heart." I replied, hugging her warm body.
I released the hug and gave her a kiss on the cheek, "Go on, get dressed, and be quick about it. Don't want Mom waking up."
She got up and fled to her room and quickly but quietly as possible.
To say I was getting sick of this was an understatement. To say I told myself this before would be an understatement as well. I've been saying the same thing for the past five years. It wasn't like this all our lives. We were once a normal family. I just want my sister not to have to worry about getting slapped in the face for no reason. That only happened once by the hand of my father, who I then knocked to the ground with one swift elbow to the face. He never said anything to me about that. I only assumed he knew he deserved it but, wishful thinking. He wasn't the kind of 'man' to see his faults.
"All ready to go?" I said, with my casual-wear on, in front of my sister's open bedroom door. She hasn't slept there in about a year. She only goes in to get clothes. There's no room other than the wood floor in my bedroom for her stuff.
"All ready!" she said, a bit too loud, hugging me tight with her cute pink hoodie and tight jeans on.
"Child would you shutup! I'm trying to sleep!" mother yelled from across the hall from her room.
A dirty look came across my face as I pressed Serenity's head into my chest. I saw the look of fear in Serenity's eyes as she glared at the hallway. I don't think mother possesses the power to hurt anyone other than in verbal language. Although, I don't think she would even think to do that after I had hit father.
I moved her chin to face me and moved in to gently massage her lips with mine. This always cheered her up and made her giggle.
"Come on, school starts in twenty minutes." I held her hand and took her to the car.
The drive to her high school was only about five to ten minutes away, so we usually hung out by one of the benches against the walls.
"When are you going to repair the dent?" she said, rubbing my right shoulder through my thick black hoodie as I turned left on our street. She was referring to the giant dent on the hood of the car that dad did when he hit it with a baseball bat. He was drinking a good amount that night. I'm just glad it wasn't my sister who didn't feel the brunt of that. If that did happen, I'd hurt
"You know I can't afford it, hun. It's just a dent, not worth three-hundred dollars." I smiled at her.
She turned the radio on and we continued our drive to her school.
Eventually, we arrived and we had ten minute to spare. We headed over to the bench and sat next to each other.
"So, made any new friends?" I asked, knowing the answer.
She took my left hand and looked me in the eye. "New friends... You know I don't even have old friends."
"You're an amazing girl, everyone should be lining up to hang with you."
She reached and hooked her right arm around my back and held me in for a hug.
"I only need you, Kane."
"Me too," I replied, kissing her on the head.
"Look, we'll go out to McDonalds after school, okay?" She loved fast-food restaurants. Surprisingly, we don't gain much weight. Doctors might say we have fast-metabolism.
"Yay!" she got up from the bench and looked around: there was no one. She pulled me in for a long kiss, her tongue swirling around in my mouth.
"I'll see you in eight hours!" she said, pulling her lips away from me and running off inside the school.
I got up from the bench and slowly, the smile from my lips faded away. It amazes me how I still depressed every time she's not with me. She's the only person I look forward to and rely on. Even before our parents clawed each other's eye balls out every night. I remembered the days where we played with her barbie dolls. I'd play with the male doll, pretending that I was some psychopath murderer. It was great! I just can't find peace without her.
I walked off to my car, unsure of what I would be doing today. It's been like this since I quit my part-time job. I might read a book.
"Hey! You the one who put that bruise on Serenity's face a month ago?" a boy around the age of Serenity's said. He had scruffy black hair and a couple pimples on his left cheek. He knows Serenity?
"Who are you and why do you care?" I responded with my back leaning against my car.
"I've seen her around. She doesn't talk much, and I noticed the bruise. Did you do it or not."
His tone sounded angry. It was like he cared about her. He didn't even know her. He must have a crush or something. I couldn't help but feel jealous and angry.
"Maybe that's none of your business." I turned around to open my car door but was stopped in place when the boy placed his hand on my back.
"Listen pa-" I cut him off mid-sentence, pushing him against what seemed to be his van.
"Stay away from my girlfriend, or I'll beat you, bad
It was pretty apparent he saw us kissing, so telling him that Serenity was my sister would be bad for her. Who knows what this child would do or say.
I punched him in the gut before pushing him aside. He limped back to his car. I hope the school doesn't have live camera feed on the parking lot.
I got in my car and watched as the bastard drove off and onto the street, clearly breaking some laws of the road.
Before I could put the keys in the ignition, I stopped mid-way. I felt paranoid. I felt like I needed to stay and watch over the school. Maybe I should make sure that nosey prick doesn't show up again. No, there's no way I'm staying in this car for eight hours. I drove home.
When arriving home, I noticed my mom's car was gone. Good.
I got inside, locked the door, and ended up in my room and on my bed.
My phone vibrated. It was a text from Serenity.
I texted back, 'Too bad. Stop texting and do your work.'
I knew she wasn't going to stop. This was something we did when we weren't with each other. It was fun.
'What are you doing?'
'I was planning on reading a book.'
'You read books?!'
We eventually stopped texting and I ended up falling asleep. I dreamt that I still had my job as a waitress at my local diner. I made decent money and could afford to buy things Serenity wanted. I just wanted to make her happy. That's all I needed, nothing else.
I woke up and the time read 3:40. Just in time to pick up Serenity from school.
I rushed over to the high school and didn't bother to park because she was waiting by the curb. She hopped in.
"What's 1 + 1?" I asked.
She playfully punched me in the arm and kissed me on the lips before buckling up.
"You know I had to write an essay for my finals today. But all I could think about was you." she said.
My heart melted.
"So if I get below an A, it's your fault!" she exclaimed.
"You're too old for the playhouse, lets do a drive-thru and eat at home?"
Saying 'home' always made me shiver.
"I'd like that. I don't like nosey people listening in to our conversations anyways." she responded.
Speaking about nosey people...
"Hey, do you know a boy about your age, with black scruffy hair? Some pimples on his face?"
"Uhhm, it's high school... That pretty much fits every boy's description." she replied.
"You sure you haven't noticed anyone next to you recently?"
"No... Should I be worried, Kay?" she said with concern.
I shook my head while looking her in the eyes. I think he learned his lesson.
After getting our greasy food, we arrived home and decided to eat on our couch.
By the time we finished eating, I was full and Serenity was still sipping her soda.
"It's five, baby. You know where we have to go." I said, walking over to her.
She took my hand and gave me a forced smile.
We got in my room just in time before our parents arrived, arguing as usual.
She put her soda on the counter-top and locked the door.
I took my jeans and hoodie off and so did she. I laid down on my bed and Serenity swiftly followed, crawling beside me on her knees. She cuddled next to me. Soon she got on top of me and began kissing down my neck. I held her close to me.
"Serenity," I said, enjoying her soft kisses on my chest.
"Yes, Kay?" she said before kissing me on my forehead.
"Can you hold me?"
"Mhm." she said, snuggling her head into my chest.
Life is good so long as I have Serenity.
