Conspiring to Kill the Enemy

The time has come to take some drastic measures…
We disembark tomorrow
Eight days and seven nights
We’ve been there many a time
But this time, hopefully, it’ll be much different

I’ve heard it said that
After a marriage has stayed the course for many years
Mediocrity sets in, taking you from
“Passionate” to “comfortable” to “fine” to perhaps something even worse

I hate the concept
The mere thought of “good enough” or “fine” grates against me
Nothing that is worth doing
Should be attended to in such an indifferent and lackadaisical way

Since this rings of truth
And since settling is a despicable word
I must gird myself to do all I can
To help make this marriage all that it can be

I know it takes two to tango
But perhaps if I set the tone
If I would once again become sold-out to her
She would start to re-engage

I love her
It is a compelling love
One that makes me want to chase her down
Like a carnivore after its prey

So I will begin anew
And commit whole heartedly to this pursuit
To serve her, to listen to her
To be patient with her…to see how far we can go

So I will try to charm her
To rescue the beauty and re-capture her heart
The hammer will be drawn back and with a deadly blow
I will power the stake right through the vicious heart of…
Mediocrity

"Nothing that is worth doing Should be attended to in such an indifferent and lackadaisical way" ... well-stated - and perhaps we should all be better if we would once again let ourselves be sold out and commit whole-heartedly. Excellent!

The greatness of your love will not come back null and void. I believe in the law of reciprocity and your love and desire surely will prevail. Love your ability to put your thoughts on paper for all of us to feel.

Mediocrity, monotony, complacency...all enemies to any marriage. Good for you that you've committed to the battle!
