The image of you 
that remained when I woke 
was that smile you had that stole my heart 
so many years ago now.

I think you were at a beach, 
maybe Puerto Rico, 
after we were out of the rough patch 
and falling in love again.

The lilies I planted for you 
are nearly in full bloom now.
This year they look really striking,
maybe because of the rough winter we had.

They’ve added color to the old place 
that seemed to have left 
and they seem defiant of time 
as they come back each summer.

I’ve got a new love now
as I know you would have wanted.
And I know you would like her, 
she’s tough as nails just like you were.

Like you, she loves lilies, 
and she’s a nurse
