She gazes at stars

an appreciation
She gazes at stars

Asked to name herself, she said the name aloud

As if trying on a new sari

“stargazer”

What does she see in the night’s sky?

Does the scale and size of the void frighten her in her smallness?

Does she tilt her head back until a stellar dizziness delights her?

Does she laugh alone in the dark on her starry nights?

Do the stars cloaked in black velvet comfort her with their light?

Do her eyes reflect or absorb the sheen of a shimmering star?

Is it starlight that one sees when one sees her eyes?

Is she not too young to be this wise?

Is she even young at all or is she tasked to always be an elder spirit?

Will she not get younger as she wakes from day to day?

Can’t she prance and play like a newborn colt in a summer’s pasture?

She talks to us using the language of endearments

She casts a net of loving luminous grace and our souls don’t struggle as she pulls us

gently

in

to

her

She lifts us softly up and studies us

a smile on her face

There is no risk of injury here with her, surely?

Touched, we reach to touch her

We reach to touch her starlight shine

“Don’t “ she says

Don’t long for, Don’t desire, Don’t want

Show me then

how to sate this animal’s hunger

Show me then

how to quench this animal’s thirst

Show me then

how to quiet this animal’s need

Listen, she says

Listen to the sound of water

(Water flows but does not rush to do so)

Listen to the wind in the tree

(Wind blows but does not strain to do so)

Water is but water

Wind is but wind

What wind and water do

Wind and water do through being

Wind and water

What stars do is shine

Shine from a millennia gone in time

Seen this one night

And then gone forever

Be joyful to have seen

Be joyful to have seen her

Be joyful to have seen her shine

very lovely, touching and profound. I like how the words and lines flow as your lover says all life must. The gentle intensity of this poem is satisfying.
