Let us now try kindness
we have gone all the other routes
and it has led us to this
bitter ashes in our mouths when we should be singing
We started on such a good note
the pure rapture of saxophones played in the night
that echoed off the brick walls as we
drank a bottle of red and leaned against each other
Remember the night we played in the surf
as the sun extinguished itself into the night
the big yellow dogs that ran and greeted us, happy to be dogs
running free on a sandy beach, and so were we
Yes, the wind and the rain has altered the landscape
we created as our place in each other’s hearts
The relentless erosion of time and cares and woes
has chipped away at it, over the course of the years
Let us please now look back and remember
what drew us to each other in the first place
the happy recognition that we weren’t alone after all
that there was another who laughed at banana peel pratfalls
Another who enjoyed the taste of lips searched for in the night
Another who whispered to the other, “It will be all right”
We can do this, my dear, I know that we can
all you have to do is remember, and take my hand.
