Faith is young and naïve but full of passion for life. She walks with her hands tied with her groceries bags. Her mind, as always, drifts as she smiles at the sunny Florida day.
"Are there any gentleman left nowadays?"
Quietly she puts away her groceries, as her mind drifts to He Who is Unknown—only a shadow and a dream.
Days go by and the dream continues to haunt her.
Faith plans on going to the gym, but she never makes it there. On the way she sees this magnificent creature. He is tall, and his hair cut Marine Corps style, high and tight. However, he has his hands just like hers a few days ago, tied up with groceries. Faith offers to help and sheepishly he accepts. As coincidence would have it, he is new here too, and lives just under her place. She puts down the milk gallon she carries. Polite thanks, a few more words are exchanged, and a good bye with a promise of a tomorrow.
The night now is disturbed as the dream returns to haunt her, to awake in her something which felt almost inhuman.
The days, as mundane as ever, go by. It is a Sunday, the window is open, and the curtain barely sways in the early breeze of spring. Faith sits quietly reading and is startled by his voice coming through the open window.
The goofiest, sexiest grin she has ever seen peeks in. Faith stands, puts her book down, and walks to meet him outside in the balcony, not inviting him to her private space.
"Good to see you!"
Her heart beats as fast as a humming bird's heart.
"Be still, my heart," she thinks.
Hellos and a few words are exchanged, and a stroll is decided. The air is crisp and salty; the sun is whispering good night, giving way for the caresses of the darkness to fall. The route and destination unspoken and it is on a secluded patch of grass, in the distance a bridge, the water at their feet is now still and dark. Faith and Mikkel sit close, almost instantly as long time lovers. The ease of what is felt between them is what many would call kismet.
Timid as she is, she sighs, and blushes at his gaze. Hours spent in the nothingness of time. Faith thinks it's magical. Mikkel's hand rises and, with one soft caress with fingers on her blushing cheek, he smiles and his green eyes, she feels, glow. He leans to gently kiss her forehead.
"Time to head back, cutie," he says.
The dream returns. Faith wakes to sheets clinging to her glistening body. She decides on a shower, and to sleep again. However, the dream haunts her, but now she searches for his face and what she finds are those glowing eyes. Startled, she wakes up realizing she has put a face to her dream. Two months of dreams, walks, words, forehead kisses. She now has his entire face memorized—every eyelash, every curve, the crooked smile.
He disappears every few weeks, a mystery. She is lost to his voice, his scent, his light touch.
At work now she is told she will go soon to Keflavik, Iceland. Mortified, she waits to tell him. Days go by and he is not found. On her last night she quietly walks to their place of meeting, and as she sits, her thoughts drift to him, and her eyes dampen.
"Don't cry for me, cutie," he says.
He hears her heartbeat, the blood running through her veins, racing. He does not dare to come near her. She too is frozen, and feels almost as a prey. The dampness in her eyes has now formed a tear, which slowly makes its travel down her blushing cheek. Two long strides and he is at her side. One hand pulls at her tiny waist, the other at her face. His lips find their way to hers for the first time. She is rendered breathless, the kiss has her surrendered. His hands draw her closer. She leans her head on his shoulder as his embrace keeps her safe. All else is now a blur, and all other problems have disappeared.
A few moments of silence and he takes her hand in his. They walk in silence to her place and are now at her door
"You are safe," he says.
"But..." She is silenced with a passionate kiss.
"Shh. I will be here when you return."
