Topic: Word 2016 question
Posted: 25 Sep 2018 19:01

WOW - Thank you all for some beautiful on-target responses. I shall keep using my Word 2010 and to hell with the upgrade. I need a stable work-horse product, and from all of your remarks - I already have it. ! THANK YOU ALL

Topic: Word 2016 question

Hello, can some kind soul answer a question for me. I have been using MS Word 2010 for years and now considering if I should upgrade to Word 2016 standalone. (I have no need for all that full Office crap, just a good word processor)
Aside from offering two prices for the apparently the same thing, $129 and $79, Microsoft are masters at never giving a straight answer. They say their standalone MS Word 2016 Home and Student, is not for ‘commercial’ use. How silly is that if you are a published writer.
Also, some reviews are saying it won’t take add-ons, well I use Grammarly, does that mean it won’t work?

A bit lost here, anyone have some advice?

Thanks, Helen

( I have a Win 10 system )

Topic: Is it normal for a story to "get away" from the writer's planned outline, and sort of write itself?
Posted: 06 Dec 2017 14:17

When I create a character, they have an age, a location in time and a situation/predicament.
I have discovered that my character will then begin to tell their own story as they look around at what they see and experience. Yes, I try a nudge here and there, but the moment I feel something is not in keeping with that character, I back off, find a place of truth, and then allow that character to resume their adventure.
I think I was heavily influenced by early years on stage. I may practice the spoken lines while sitting in the green room but when standing in the wings I was steeping myself in my character’s back-story. Am I wet, cold, hungry, tired, exhilarated, distressed etc? Then I left my own self in the wings and stepped onstage in character. It had its own life.

I know – Perhaps not a disciplined way to write, but I have faith the character will tell their own story if I allow them to breathe.

They say absence makes the heart grow fonder. I will tell you now that it is absolute unadulterated horseshit. Absence and distance cut your heart into little pieces and leaves a hole inside that hurts. Katie. Oh my Katie… I had been attending a four-day seminar given by the International Business Women’s Association, hosted by the International Banque de France in Paris. The Wall...

Dad's Prescription

Present Day: “Dad… Dad, are you in there?” Silly question really because I know he is in the house somewhere. I work as a Family Physician in a local medical clinic and visit home a couple of times a week to check on my father who lives alone. This evening when I enter the house, it is dark, no lights, and the heating is set excessively low. I turn up the thermostat and switch on...

I am not sure if I was born before my time, or after it. More accurate to say, that perhaps I had a little bit of both somewhere along the way, but not enough of either. What am I talking about here? It was nineteen-forty-eight. I was one of those silly small-town girls who allowed her best friend to talk her into going to dance for newly commissioned officers at the local Army Depot. I...

Nephew

“I am NOT gay, I like girls. I really, really like girls. I am NOT A SISSY.” He was panicked, frightened and close to tears. His voice dropped to a whisper. “I’m not… a sissy… I just might have a strange fetish.” That fascinating disclosure emanated from my then eighteen-year-old nephew, David, while he was standing in front of me in the middle of my own bedroom. ~ ~ ~ I am the...

At last, I felt myself relaxing, smoothing out to the mellow tones of the Five Satins harmonizing. ‘… In the still… of the night…’   I gazed at it for a long time, indulging myself with the exquisite torture of self-denial.   Stroking my fingertips gently up and down the full length of its nine inches, I teased myself with simple anticipation, the sheer deliciousness of postponed...

I was annoyed… At first … Then I was amused. - - - I have lived in Midtown Manhattan for most of my adult life and Eugenia’s Creations just off Herald Square is my favorite boutique. I am a curvy girl and Eugenia designs specifically for ladies with a figure. I tend towards the slightly edgy side of strong tailored pieces, which means I don't do frilly stuff well. Nevertheless, I have...
