I've always pronounced it as Gif, but I read somewhere a couple of days ago that it is actually Jif. NEVER heard anyone else call it that though, and not sure if it's true.

I had this discussion the other night with my mother.

"I have the funniest gif to show you. Hang on. Let me find it."
"A what?!?"
"A gif."
"What?"
"A jif?"
"What are you talking about?"

I finally resorted to spelling it out...

"A g... i... f."
"Oh? Those looping vid thingies. Well why didn't you say so!"

d'oh! dontknow

I've only ever said Gif, because as @Buz said, Jif is a peanut butter product

We don't have THAT jif here, but we do have Jif scouring liquid, so don't you foreigners ask me to make you a Jif sammich next time you are in Oz visiting me.

It stands for "Graphics Interchange Format" so i say GIF as in "Go". I also say "AV" for avatar, not "AVI", because AVI is a video file.

Without an etymological root - it being and acronym as crazydiamond points out - there is no right or wrong way of saying it.

I'd go with the hard "g" along with the only other word in English to begin with the same three letters GIFT

Agreed can't say much more than that, really. Now let's see someone put forward an etymological argument for "jif". Also on the AVI thing I pronounce the individual letters.

I don't even know what it means when shown in its non acronym form never mind how to pronounce it. Does it mean hard core sexy picture swopping?

Well I've never "heard" it called anything LOL! But since these are .gif files according to the computer, then gif is what I would go with. Just like .com .jpg .net etc.

I have always pronounced it gif....but what do I know, hell, I don't even know what it means! I mean I know its a moving pic, but what does it really stand for?

Well I looked it up on Google....and it stands for Graphics Interchange Format.....so in my little mind gif sounds like it is how you would pronounce it....
