The media saying she is 'heavy' (to be a swimsuit model) is the exact reason why women of the world are self conscious about their looks and weight. This could be the start of a major rant, but I won't waste my key strokes as I am sure most who read this thread know exactly what I would say if I did continue with it.

I agree. It's sad that negative things are even said. She looks perfectly fine and healthy so why do we have to judge people so much?

She is a very attractive and sexy woman. She is a better reflection of American women than those wafer-thin models who never eat a meal. Give me a woman with real curves anytime!!!

I really dont think we can compare "catwalk" and "swimsuit" models or put them in the same category because they are "models". They are totally different because they are selling different things. It would actually make me sick to see a catwalk model in a swimsuit. Thank god they have their bony ass's covered up. As for the swimsuit model, I dont think you can beat a peachy ass, legs and arms with some meat on them, and enough boob to at least fill a bikini. As for Kate, I can see why they would say she is not in good enough shape to model a bikini, but I think she looks super sexy. Good on her for getting out there as she is, or how ever she looks on any given day. That, is sexy..

Kate Upton = beautiful!

Fuck "too big".

I'm sorry, but for most models a size 10 is too big. The whole bony-ribs-sticking-out-look maybe great for hanging fabric from, but when it comes to showing some skin there needs to be curves.

*sigh*

The fashion world is bullshit sometimes!!

Make love not horcruxes! >^_^<

Check out my stories, you'd be surprised what I can do :)

She is definitely more Playboy than fashion model to me. And actually - commercial models tend to make way more $ than the runway/editorial variety. And speaking of commercials, she is a major sexpot in this one.

She is smart to cash in on this type of modelling (the whole 'sex sells' thing) rather than try to force herself into a niche-market that she would really have to suffer to maintain the standards for. She will become more of a name doing this kind of stuff, having the confidence and healthy body image and keeping the 'controversy' going in the fashion circles rather than starving herself down and becoming just another coat hanger on the runway.

There's modelling opportunity for all kinds of girls - as long as you play into your natural genetics and know you can't do it all. And that comment goes both ways - you know a waif-type runway model isn't going to get hired for this kind of commercial either. It's not that big of a deal - there's plenty of work to go around.

As well - every female I know far prefers to aspire to swimsuit/playboy model standards rather than Gucci model standards. The runway figures are there purely to sell the clothes, not to tell us what we want to look like.

First she is beautiful. Second the bathing suit doesn't fit properly but she looks hot!! I love that she is supposedly "30" too heavy, because if that's the case "you go girl" love your curves!

Kate Upton has to be one of the most beautiful women to grace this planet. She is perfect in every sense of the word. Who ever says that she is overweight is obviously a fucking moron. I wouldn't kick her out of my bed for eating crackers.

Kate's gorgeous. Perhaps this bathing suit was made for someone smaller than she is, but that's no reflection on her. She's perfect to me. The bathing suit is an awful fit. She'd look great in this exact same bathing suit if it were made in her size.

I hadn't heard any of this, but it does make sense. She has runway-model stature (5'10" if I recall), so naturally, at some point, comments would be made in reference to her 'modeling' qualities. It's almost unfair to judge any woman vs. a runway model, even women of world-class beauty and appeal like Kate Upton. They're often not even "pretty", but through genetics and hard work, they fit a very specific body type and are highly skilled. Some do cross over to lingerie and retail fashion modeling. And so yes, I can see how Kate would be considered too heavy by 20 or so pounds, and not toned enough to fit that mold. And as head-shaking as the instant reaction to that may be, it might be that Kate Upton's ill-fit as a potential runway model is a prime example of how futile and just plain unhealthy it is judge ourselves on that standard.

I think the trap to avoid here is equating industry model standards with "what men want," or "what we as women should aspire to." The polling has been done, here at Lush and in western society at large, and men don't, by and large, seek out size-2, 6'-1" women. They don't look at Kate Upton and think "ugh, could she please mix in a few sit-ups? Jesus Christ, she's flabby."

Just because VS or any other fashion line (to say nothing of the haute couture houses) has a very strict and specific requirement for their models, it doesn't mean that their standards are a mirror of society's standards for women. Unless you're auditioning for modeling work at Prada, nobody's saying you should be a size 0 with a tiny ass and a bony face.

In my opinion, Kate Upton is damn near perfect, right down to the fact that her body isn't robotically fit and trim. She seems real*, and no less sexy or beautiful for it.

*though not necessarily attainable, of course LOL. But also not 'plastic', or with innate aloofness, the way models like Klum and Gisele, and even Brooklyn Decker seem to be.

This whole business about who should and shouldn't appear on the cover of SI is very affirmative, in that, it really raises the question of a conflict in values: on the one hand we have women who have "photogenic" looks and thus are used by business to market products to make money; but are such women healthy physically, and does the image that they project to young women who view them as beautiful and themselves as ordinary or "fat" have a healthy effect on their psyches??
I have worked with young women at a Uni all my life, and must tell you that the consensus is that the effect of such thinking is very harmful to young women. It is tragic to see women treated this way!!
This happens all the time, that is, the rumors about women like Kate Upton as I happen to adore Kate Winslet and she has been turned down for many roles because they say the same thing about her!!

I can tell you as a man, that to many of us, not all, granted, but a lot more than women suspect perhaps, both Kate Upton and Winslet, are gorgeous women, just as Beyonce is!

So to me, a man who has seen thousands of young women down on themselves because they don't look like stick people, including one of my own, the real questions is: What are we going to do with businesses that project unhealthy images of women to our young women that can
potentially harm them? Can we do nothing at all about it?
What can we do to help young women feel better about themselves?

Kate Upton looks good in a bikini to me. Variety is the spice of life. She's bigger than what the industry gives us, yet she looks super sexy anyhow. I think the modeling industry needs to expand their model range.

I think people seem to have difficulty differentiating between fashion model appeal and general sex appeal. The people that design clothing tend to lean towards very tall, very skinny women because those are the medium in which their clothing is best demonstrated. There is soooo much outrage over what this perceived "ideal" based on fashion model physiology. Nobody gives a shit, other than the people that are presenting the clothes for international sale. Most of the people that get upset are women that don't feel adequate because they don't meet these supposed ideals. When you look at fashion modelling... think of those women as clothes hangers from which designers hang their clothes. If you want to know what men actually find attractive, look at playboy, penthouse (if they actually still exist or...PORN.

Kate Upton is fucking gorgeous. Is she thicker than the usual fashion model? Yes. Does that decrease her appeal? Hell no. For all the guys out there...I really don't need to say anything because I think you feel the same as me. For the women... Please please stop using fashion models as this supposed ideal that you are supposed to live up to. And please stop referring to all women that are thinner than you as "Anorexic". And please please quite claiming that all men have this "thinner is better" attitude. Attraction is not a choice. And you should repeat that mantra to yourself everytime you turn the page in one of those stupid fucking magazines that you read. You read those magazines because that is what YOU want. You want to know what guys want...buy a fucking Hustler. Fashion media is for women, not for men.

Watch Kate Upton playing flip cup on Jimmy Fallon. Yummy. Should she model bikinis? I really don't care. All I know is that she looks damn amazing in that red dress and she look stunning in that game of war commercial. But please dont call her a "plus sized model."

Kate uptons body is so smoking

Only a person who expects women to look like ten year olds could ever call her heavy

She is beyond beautiful !!

These designers have got to stop dictating to WOMEN what is lovely.

I mean she has natural breasts flat tummy hips and a beautiful backside!

And yes I have a crush on her

She is what our teenage daughters need to think is stunning!!!

Not size zero models who have bad hair skin and bodies from lack of food!

Must... not... respond in this thread...

Sorry, I just can't help it. I think that a lot of people fail to recognize what the debate is all about in this particular situation. The question isn't: "Is Kate Upton too fat?". The question isn't even: "Is Kate Upton too fat to be attractive?". The question is: "Is Kate Upton too fat to appear on the cover of a magazine that features the very most attractive female bodies?". And my forthright perspective on this matter is yes, she definitely could be considered too fat on some of her pictures.

As another poster mentioned however, her weight seems to fluctuate a lot:

And she still made it to the yearly cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition two years in a row (2012-2013), so apparently the obvious answer to this question seems to be: "No, she isn't too fat". That said, she was relatively lean in those specific photo-shoots, and considering her important weight fluctuations I can understand why this question was raised.

Let's get real people: there is a point where 'too much fat' becomes unattractive, and considering the highly competitive nature of the beauty industry, you can expect that the standards are going to be pretty severe concerning what 'too much fat' represents in that very specific field.

Here's what both men and women consider to be the most attractive female body as established by a thorough scientific study (full paper here):

These aren't the standards of the fashion industry, they're the preferences of common average people. And I don't know about you, but to me the typical 'hot babe body' fits the bill a lot more than the one of Kate Upton in her heavier pictures:

And yes, I get this whole 'beauty has a broad definition, different people love different types of bodies', but the matter of fact is that there's still a certain body type that's going to be the most attractive for the most amount of people. I sometimes visit sex-cams websites out of curiosity (or else), and lately I stumbled across a model who can manage to attract an impressive amount of people in her room. The average girls can attract 50-100 people in their rooms; the hot ones generally attract 200-500 people; that specific girl easily attracts 1800-2000 people in her room on a regular basis. Not kidding, Jenna Jameson was even giving a show on that website at some point; she had around 500 people in her room, whereas that other model still had those 1800-2000 regulars in her room.

And here's what that girl looks like:

Is that really surprising to you? According to my own life experiences and the many opinions I've heard from men regarding female beauty, it's really not surprising to me... at all. And by the way, whereas a lot of cam-girls show plenty of pussy close-ups, fuck themselves silly with a dildo and even offer squirt-shows, that one girl barely performs anything explicit: she only occasionally removes her bra/panties and move around sensually. And she can still manage to attract 5-10x more men than most other girls, simply by flaunting her half-naked body.

Yes, she also has a cute face and a fun attitude, but considering that most guys visit her room to jerk-off, I'm fairly certain that her body has quite a lot to do with her success; and I'm not quite convinced that a girl with Kate Upton's body (at her fattest) could gather that many people in her room. To me, this is a rather obvious confirmation of what men generally deem as the most sexually attractive.

Of course, there are certain guys that deviate from the norm and who prefer heavier figures; hell, there's even probably thousands of guys around the world who prefer to masturbate to naked pictures of anime characters. But the fact still remains that there is such a thing as an 'ideal female body' that will please the most men, and companies who make money out of beauty/sex are well-aware of that fact.

Back to Kate Upton. The matter at hand isn't whether or not she's attractive; it's about whether or not she stands out among thousands of other models, and whether or not she has a body worthy enough to be featured on the cover of a magazine that presents some of the sexiest female bodies. Apparently Sports Illustrated deemed her worthy enough, but what if they didn't? What if she appeared at the audition at her fattest and got rejected (which easily could have happened)? Sports Illustrated mandate isn't to select models that are 'just good enough' or to reassure women around the world concerning what's attractive; it's about presenting models that will turn heads, provoke reactions and sell big numbers. And no matter who they end up choosing, you can be goddamn assured that the competition is still extremely strong... and not that much more lenient than the way that frail catwalk models are selected.

So yeah, there's a harsh competition within that industry, and fat definitely factors in regarding that competition. Kate Upton got chosen among leaner models, but that's not out of sympathy or because SI suddenly lowered their standards: it's because she has quite a few other physical features going on for herself. She has that very unique 'cute yet sultry' look about her, which apparently SI (and some other companies) favored over a leaner figure. I find it rather ironic when people perceive her as some kind of underdog that needs support and encouragement, and a model that the average woman can relate to; she's still one-in-a-million as far as beauty is concerned, and she managed to surpass thousands of other models in her career. I'm not quite sure how that makes her an 'underdog', or how being featured on the cover of SI two years in a row is supposed to be any 'relatable'. And sorry to those who'd like to relate to her, but in terms of exceptional beauty standards, Kate Upton has quite a lot more in common with all those typical flawless supermodels than she has with average women.

It seems to me that a lot of people simply have a hard time admitting that there's an obvious competition regarding beauty/attractiveness. That's pretty much what attractiveness is all about in fact: competition. The point isn't to reach a certain baseline level of beauty, the point is to stand out among members of your own gender and to seize the attention of the opposite sex in a definitive manner. There are no winners if there are no losers, as harsh as it may sound. Plenty of women advocate that men should be more indulgent when it comes to beauty, but the reality is that each one of them secretly dreams to shine among a throng of average women. I'm not asking you to agree with me on that one, no worries, but I'm fairly convinced about that fact myself.

Men are subject to that competition too, by the way. Compare these pictures:

Is the guy on the left attractive? Well, I'm sure that plenty of young girls would find him rather attractive. Now put that guy in the context of a very selective setting, say Superman's audition. Does he have what it takes to get the first role? Does he strike you as a commanding near-perfect semi-god from another planet who can stop an invasion of super-villains? Not quite, if you're being honest. As much as he's fairly attractive and has an healthy body, the public just doesn't want to see him in that kind of role; they want to see Henry Cavill pumped up on steroids with that "Oh my fucking god, I've rarely seen anything like that!" body. And the exact same phenomenon occurs when models get selected for the covers of internationally renowned magazines; people don't want to see a moderately attractive woman with a passable appearance, they want to see the very best of what can be offered. So yeah, Kate Upton's body-fat was likely thoroughly scrutinized before she was cast for her photo-shoots, I'm not sure why this should come up as a surprise to anybody.

I don't exactly have Henry Cavill's body myself, by the way. I have a fairly athletic body, but certainly not one that clearly stands out in the realm of athletic bodies. And if I was to audition for the role of a powerful superhero, it's very likely that I'd be told to pack on quite a few more muscles (there goes my dream of being cast as Batman). Does that upset me or make me feel jealous? Not exactly, my own experiences showed me that I can still manage to attract plenty of gorgeous girls, I really don't need a body that's one-in-a-million for that (and I'd even argue that my girlfriend is actually way sexier than Kate Upton, but that's just my very personal preference). And honestly, since guys with the appearance of Henry Cavill are one-in-a-million, it's really not like they're all that visible in my immediate surrounding; those near-perfect icons are so rare that they barely have any impact on the competition anyway. And I really won't be all that disturbed if someday I hear that highly attractive actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, Ashton Kutcher or Jude Law don't have the physicality to be cast as breathtaking superheroes.

Why do we let people dictate to US what WE think is attractive

So only size zeros should get to wear swimsuits.

I loathe the body builder type

I mean I used to go dancing with those bozos and they could only lift their arms a few inches.

As a mother of a teenage daughter who is a size SIX. Six and her friends are zeros

This is in direct correlation to fing magazines who expect women to have big boobs and size zero waists

So we have a whole generation of teenage girls not eating..gettting hair extensions because your freaking hair falls out when u eat zero who are uber bitches because they are hungry...have stopped having periods....

Because some fucker thinks that THAT is what WE as women should look like?

We need to hold the fashion world RESPONSIBLE for this crap they are feeding to our kids.

Now I am really sorry u have been turned down for assignments

Because u didn't fit into another assholes version of hot

Having seen the men in MAXIM magazine this month

I wouldn't even talk to them much less have sex with them

But for you to defend this industry and post pics of kate upton saying she isn't good enough

Is buying into the bs that karl largerfeld is trying to sell us

That anything over a size four is obese and worthless

And then am not buying it..not with all these teens and women fighting eating disorders and getting breast implants because some assholes says to be beautiful u have to look like the pictures YOU posted.

God I am mad I have a teenage daughter who has a strong athletic body who being made to feel huge because of bs like this!

Kate Upton is spectacularly beautiful, and her body is exactly as a woman's should be--fat deposits around the hips and breasts. Those skinny freaks SI and others have always preferred are just that--freaks.

Modeling is all about being judged for the perfection of your body. In my days, it was "You're too short", or "Your hips are too wide", but getting in the swimsuit edition of SI is harder than getting an Editor's Pick on Lush! Sure, Kate is ravishingly beautiful, and she's had her turn in SI, but if we're going to accept the concept of judging the creme de la creme, as we do with nearly everything, then yes, she's probably too big now. Competition is what keeps some of us us striving to be our best. Others of us see competition as unfairly judgmental and subjective. But unfair or not, being judged for being 'the best', is not going away. So Kate has to play by the same rules as the rest of the models vying for spots in SI.

I don't often crush on famous models splashed all over mag covers, but Kate Upton is magnificent. Perfect. Who is calling her too big?

And the whole skinny=perfection thing never really bothered me until I had daughters, and saw how society's strict and unrealistic definition of beauty fucks with their heads. I'm not gonna say everyone is beautiful, or that beauty is on the inside, yadayadayada, but defining beauty to mean only one wildly unrealistic body type is mindless and damaging.

And don't get me started on TV using 21-year-old models to play average teenagers. They are fucking up the body images of several generations of women.

Grrrrr.

I agree with Bethany above but with this qualifier:
But my love, what do we mean by the phrase "the best?" The best in what sense? Aesthetic beauty? If that is the case then the standards are only relevant in specific cultural contexts. In layman's terms, many other societies have judged woman's beauty with emphasis on different sensual criteria.
I remember being in Hawaii in 1974 and the bus drive told us that in Hawaii they like their women over 300 pounds (ca 24 stone) because the preferred "comfort to speed." Yet today, I would eat up Nicole Scherzinger, a polynesian, with a spoon! Would do the same with Gilian Anderson or Lucy Liu.

So on the "desirability scale," that is, "fuckability" I am sure many men would prefer Kate to anyone in SI. Note I said "many men."

I crave so much more than a physical connection. I crave your words and depth. I crave who you are and where you came from, your desires and fears. I yearn to know every inch of you beyond the surface.
