I like dirtymartini's post the best. To be totally honest I start with a bias, I don't like rap or hip-hop, a lot.

For me?

WHO GIVES A CRAP, AND, IF YOU DO, WHY?

I like a lot of things, people, stuff, ETC., but I feel the same way about ANYBODY with an ego like that. Football, baseball, basketball, hockey, politicians, religious leaders, ????. Any of it where people obsess over any kind of talent. They were either born with it or they learned it so why are they held up to be GODS in so many peoples eyes? He views himself as a god and will until he learns that all he really is is a $ (a dollar sign) to the people with the real power. The ones making the real money off him. When he isn't doing that for them any more he will cease being godlike.

I think it's mostly because the vast majority of the fans REQUIRE someone else to help them to be, "Not Bored." They can't entertain themselves. I've done hundreds of stage plays, a couple movies and TV shows and I understand the requirement for entertainment, but not obsession like this. He made $35M because these fans pay the exorbitant ticket and recording prices and can not stop. I have known people that deny things for themselves and their families so they can pay for it. For them it's a sickness.

I have 6 kids, 15 grand kids and 2 great grand kids and most of them and hundreds of their teen age friends always had a very similar comment, "I'm Bored, what can I do?" My job, as a father, was to teach them to think for themselves and enjoy everything for as long as they could without harming anyone else. I am a Taoist.

He is what he is because that's what he needs to be to survive, in his own mind. What do the fans think he thinks of them?

He doesn't!

You are all a "$".

I am always a gentleman.

Now, if we're going to say "well, literally speaking, he doesn't produce 'rock music', so he's not the biggest rock star", then I guess that's one way of looking at it. But a) the term 'rock star' generally means something broader than a specific music genre (Madonna is and was a massive rock star, even though she's never 'rocked'), and b) there's no disputing the fact that hip-hop has replaced 'rock music' in terms of popularity and cultural influence. Hip Hop, which makes up or directly influences most of the top 40 today, is what Rock used to be, and Kanye is it's biggest and arguably most talented personality.

If you took ten typical fans of pop music in 2013, I'm not sure two of them could pick Eric Clapton out of a lineup, and most wouldn't know who Freddie Mercury was.

And 9 out of 10 will say Justin Bieber is a GOD!! What does that tell you?

Anyone who claims to be the biggest anything most surely isn't!!

That taste is subjective. My daddy's parents thought Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross were worthless musicians. Not to say that Justin Bieber = Marvin Gaye; I'm just saying, new rock stars rise up, then everyone that treasures previous generations of rock stars declares them worthless. There weren't too many 50 year olds that thought a whole lot of the Beatles when they showed up either.

Speaking of the Beatles, not sure how you feel about them, but John Lennon did once declare them to be bigger than Jesus. If that ain't calling your own shot, I don't know what is.

I dont like rap at all but I dont think they are worthless musicians. But I dont think much of Kanye as a person.

Kanye West, the biggest rock star on the planet? Seriously?

IMO (and this is just My opinion folks) Kanye West is neither rock nor musician. To think of himself as the greatest rock musician on the planet is beyond laughable.

Not only is he not on the same playing field as Elvis or the Beatles or Michael Jackson or many many others - he's not even in the "cheap seats" when it comes to rock music.

KW is an egostical asshole with a God complex and a 2 year old's temper. He should consider himself very lucky to even be putting out music at all (that is, if what he does constitutes music).

Well... it's not really fair to name a bunch of dead guys as being better musicians since he *did* only say "biggest rockstar on the planet." geek

I'm not a major fan of Kanye or anything but as far as current artists that could be qualified as 'rockstars or superstars' making waves, he is pretty up there. Ego comes with that kind of stage and music genre. It's a persona.

21 fucking grammy awards later, and people are saying he's a joke? Really? LOL... Ok, then.

I don't really have an issue with him. I think he's hugely talented. I think he knows how to stay in the headlines. And I think a lot of the controversy is on purpose. He might be a bit of a dick or egomaniac but most of today's megastars are. I don't think it takes away from his impact on the music scene, whether you like him as a person or not.

I could agree with this if Kanye would be big around the planet as he is in the states. But he is not. As I see it this statement of his, would apply for Madonna and Britney. Justin B. was big but not for long period of time, children grew up and started to listen something else, which doesnt make him a 'rock star' but 'just a global star for shorter period of time'.

Those bunch of dead people did something under their 30 years of life more than you and I could do in our lifetime, not to mention their fucking talent, which you have to agree to.
They lived in different music era, its not to compare to, but their popularity can be measured, easily, and I dont think Mr.Kanye can fill the stadium of 100.000 people which granfathers Rolling Stones did on their tour in the begining of century outside the USA of course. clown

This ^^. Most people I know wouldnt have a clue who he is. However they would know who Bono, Jon Bon Jovi, Axl Rose, Mick Jagger etc are. Kanye West is an irrelevant speck in the musical spectrum.

I meant the 'dead people' comment in jest. I don't think Kanye comes close to being the most groundbreaking or talented artist of all time - not by a longshot. Just that today, in this current decade, without comparing him to past legends or superstars of previous decades, and just measuring him against other artists who are currently on the scene, he is near the top as far as accomplishments and accolades.

I feel like his antics and attitude have overshadowed his music in some ways, but paring away the bullshit of who he represents himself to be, he's done damn well for himself.

Quote wrote:

As of 2013, West has won a total of 21 Grammy Awards, making him one of the most awarded artists of all-time. About.com ranked Kanye West No. 8 on their "Top 50 Hip-Hop Producers" list. On May 16, 2008, Kanye West was crowned by MTV as the year's No. 1 "Hottest MC in the Game." On December 17, 2010, Kanye West was voted as the MTV Man of the Year by MTV. Billboard ranked Kanye West No. 3 on their list of Top 10 Producers of the Decade. West has also been included in the Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world as well as being listed in a number of Forbes annual lists.
In their 2012 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, Rolling Stone included three of West's albums—The College Dropout at number 298, Late Registration at number 118, and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy at number 353.

It would actually be interesting to start a thread of who people think is the *current* biggest 'rockstar/superstar' of the moment who is deserving of that title - as in this current decade's #1. I'm not saying it's Kanye - I like some of his songs but I don't consider myself a 'Kanye fan'. Having said that, I also won't dismiss what he's accomplished just because he acts like a d-bag sometimes.

PS - off-topic but it kind of makes me cringe thinking that Britney is (or will be) considered a legend of her time because she's globally popular. A manufactured girl that's never written her own music, has lipsynched every concert and performance, and piggy-backed on the formula for female superstardom laid out by Madonna. Having said all that, her accomplishments (however pre-fabricated) are impressive and I love many of her songs. It's hard for me to see her as a true groundbreaking 'artist' though. The same can probably be said for a lot of the top-selling singers/musicians of the past decade or two though.

"Rap the new rock 'n' roll. We culture. Rap is the new rock 'n' roll"...." We the real rock stars, and I'm the biggest of all of them."- Kanye West. As I read more of his quote I understood his claim more. He's not claiming to be the greatest "rock star" per se, but the greatest rapper and since "rap is the new rock n roll" by default he's the greatest rock star on the planet. However, his "logic" is still faulty because he is NOT the greatest rapper on the planet either. Not talking First he claimed he was a god and now this, obviously he craves attention.

Kanye West announces that he is the biggest rock star on the planet? What a Jerk off. Someone needs to slap him upside the head and bring him back to reality.

Just an interesting perspective here. i grew up with Hip Hop - do i like rock? yes, but i still enjoy hip hop as well. a lot of people's comments here are simply fueled by the fact that they don't like hip hop. that's cool. that said, to claim that hip hop artists have no talent, simply because you don't like the genre seems a little unfair. there are some brilliant rappers out there - the skill is different then singing, obviously, but what they do shouldn't be down played simply because you aren't a fan. personally, i don't care for quite a few rock artists, but i don't deny that they're quite good. and yes, there's some crap hip hop out there as well, just like there's some crap rock. hip hop is growing, it IS taking over as a huge force, and because of that, everyone who can hold a mic is jumping on it, just like, at one time, everyone who could afford a guitar started up a rock band.

just something to think about when you make a statement such as Kanye has no talent. how many of you who believe that have actually sat down and listened to his music? uh huh. i thought so. point made. :)

Live, love, laugh.

Rock Star denotes the Rock genre. Kanye makes noise which some people do seem to find appealing but it is definitely not rock!

Though somebody mentioned that the term "rock star" has transcended genre and has been used to refer to some musical icons that are not necessarily rockers, it doesn't mean that they are correct in their usage of the term.

Also, while Jimmy Page is still alive he holds the title of biggest rock star on the planet. I mean seriously, who doesn't like Led Zeppelin.
