While I like all of the above bands, my personal favourite would have to be The Smiths, followed closely by Joy Division/Warsaw, although my favourite song at the moment is 'I am the resurrection' by The Stone Roses.

No Happy Mondays mention?

I like Lamb too.

I can't decide between The Smiths, and Joy Division.

Best band has to be Oasis but there are many other notable bands that have shaped music culture. Bands like The Hollies, The Bee Gees, Herman's Hermits, Wayne Fontana, Freddie and The Dreamers, Joy Division and New Order. Begrudgingly you have to include The Smiths. I say begrudgingly because the guy's a complete jerk.

I may be wrong about them being from Manchester, but I am too lazy to fact-check. Echo and the Bunnymen are incredible. Someone please correct me if I am mistaken.

Oasis is my obvious answer.

BUT... I also adore The 1975. They're pretty awesome.

Oasis were the first band I fell in love with and Noel Gallagher is still among the top five people I'd love to have a drink with. The Stone Roses are probably the only Manchester band with an album I'd class among the very best ever made, but did precious little else. I like the Smiths, but wish I'd got into them as a teenager rather than my early twenties; they'd have meant so much more then.

It's tough but, on balance and right now, I'd say Joy Division.

I was going to say Oasis but finding out that the Hollies came from Manchester may force me to revise that.

In honour of my five years on Lush, here is the current version of my first Lush story. It was rewritten to fix up some issues a couple years in but the basic story remains intact.
