The faces/expressions made out of punctuation marks drive me crazy. Are we all three years old and unable to read words like grown-ups?

This is not cool (or kewl) but symptomatic of the dumbing down of everything in popular culture. It is a deliberate laziness and ignorance that will not lead to anything good. Try applying to a professional school or for an upper level position writing in text speak. I don't think it will make a great impression. Literacy matters.

(I just read what I wrote and understand that I am now officially an old curmudgeon, but I don't take it back.)

So agree. The aberration of written communication is endemic of falling standards. Although I do like the animations on here. fish

Of all our inventions for mass communication, pictures still speak the most universally understood language.

Can you imagine how irritating 'txt speak' is to a dyslexic? It actually pisses me off. I've replied "spell it out and resend it or forget it."

It annoys me so much that I stop reading the story. I am non native English speaker and when reading crap (and text speak is) I get lost and annoyed. I don't need to fight through one simple paragraph in erotic story for 5 min to decode it. I simply don't read it entirely if isn't well written. As far as messages and black-boxes goes with text speak, I don't reply to those. I don't mind slang and jargon, however written word in literature should be separated from the rest of communication forms.

Txt speak gets me everytime because I don't text much myself (and never have) so can't follow it. However, I'm an old school IT guy so pre-txt Internet abbrevations (which date to the early days of email when message length was actually an issue) like LOL, ROTFL, etc. are okay in casual usage. However, I'd never use them in a story unless it was in a quote from an email or something.

And, at risk of sounding pedantic, TGIF (cited above) isn't really txt speak and even predates email. The 1978 disco movie Thank God It's Friday used the abbreviation in its promos (I was there, I remember). Still annoying if you've never come across it before, but not strictly txt speak since it was already in the language when texting came along.

Older than that, even. The movie TGIF came out in 1978 or so.

Sigh, yes I'm old enough to remember that.

Text speak sucks period. Only when texting, nowhere else. Hell, I could care less if it was outlawed throughout the world.

I hate to see textspeak in a story. I myself am not very proficient in it, having only gotten a phone that was capable of texting in April. (Sighs remember when the word text used to be a noun?) It not only takes too long for me to figure out what is being said, but also makes me wonder what the author had that was more pressing than the story that I am taking time to read. I realize that language is a living thing, it grows, changes, evolves, shedding that which has become useless and multiplying that which is useful. I am guessing that we will just have to make the adjustment....

I might try it phonetically and see how it goes... But I'd probably just mess it all up and spell something correctly. angry7

All of them!

DO NOT enter your stories using your cell phone. Most of it this language(?) is because of them and I really don't like them. I was an electrical engineer and designed computers for 35 years. Cell phones were one I worked on and they are computers with a radio transceiver, which means it transmits and receives radio waves. Most transmit 30 to 40 milliwatts of power and 1/2 of it is going through your brain. Anyone who tells you different is lying to you to sell you a cell phone.

Nothing but a Faraday cage can protect you either because it blocks all electromagnetic radiation. You sit inside, your friend sits outside and holds the phone up close so you can hear and talk and you will never be irradiated by the cell phone. Anyone that tells you different is lying to you. Mostly they sell crap devices to gullible people that don't bother to check them out. These people tell others because the "Expert" said it worked and pretty soon it's a belief system. Yeah, like the functional retard we had for president for 8 years said, "My experts tell me there ARE weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.", and we all know where that got us.

English is an incredibly rich language and we should use it, not the junk the idiots use to enter text messages on cell phones while driving and that scares the crap out of me every time I get in a car. English includes all of the slang tongues too. It's all English and if you don't understand how to use it, read or write, you will lose to those that do.

I am always a gentleman.

I still don't even have texting - the phone is capable, I just don't pay the extra monthly fee.

I've seen it in chats on FB and other sites - totally drives me buggers, I'd never read a story that had more than the briefest glimpses of it

My dictionary said it's a Canadian city dweller that's on holiday on a ranch. Or a dandy! I'll plump for the Canadian.
As 4 txt spk I treat it like a crossword, I'm learning all the time.
