I wrote this poem last year after reading a forum thread here that someone started to remember 9-11...and btw, it was the third poem of mine inspired by a Lush forum thread...thank you Lush...

But I have to admit I'm a bit overwhelmed at how much it's taken off in the last year, and how much it's showing up on the net...

Municipal government sites like City of Eureka Springs, Arkansas...
http://www.cityofeurekasprings.org/

Local sites like The Friends of Redford Branch Library in Detroit, Michigan...
http://friendsofrbl.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Business sites like Michael Wasserman and Associates, Inc...
http://hotbrokerjobs.com/911-%E2%80%93-we-will-never-forget/

And blogs like this one by ChefGarfy...this one has good recipes too...
http://chefgarfy.wordpress.com/2011/09/09/2976-angels-called-to-heaven/

And I know it's being used in 9-11 Memorial dedications as well...and it's all very flattering, really...

The people who have contacted me about the poem seem to really like the fact that it concentrates on the better part of humanity that day...there is no mention of hate, or retaliation, or religion...it never once mentions the word "terrorism"...

It merely honors the men and women who were simply doing their jobs...

Recalling the better aspects of that day...the heroes...

We Shall Never Forget (9-11 Tribute)

Let the world always remember,
That fateful day in September,
And the ones who answered duty's call,
Should be remembered by us all.

Who left the comfort of their home,
To face perils as yet unknown,
An embodiment of goodness on a day,
When men's hearts had gone astray.

Sons and daughters like me and you,
Who never questioned what they had to do,
Who by example, were a source of hope,
And strength to others who could not cope.

Heroes that would not turn their back,
With determination that would not crack,
Who bound together in their ranks,
And asking not a word of thanks.

Men who bravely gave their lives,
Whose orphaned kids and widowed wives,
Can proudly look back on their dad,
Who gave this country all they had.

Actions taken without regret,
Heroisms we shall never forget,
The ones who paid the ultimate price,
Let's never forget their sacrifice.

And never forget the ones no longer here,
Who fought for the freedoms we all hold dear,
And may their memory never wane,
Lest their sacrifices be in vain.

09-30-10a.

Beautiful Alan!

I remember that day, in Scotland, with a baby, sitting watching the news, crying...

Poignant and timely Alan. I think this day affected the entire world in some way. My department at work (sales) were all sent home by our supervisor and we ended up going to the pub. Whilst there we drank a toast, in the manner of a wake, to those whose lives were lost, to those whose voices were silenced and to the brave rescuers and survivors. It was with Guiness actually and ever since then, every time I drink Guiness I remember.

Lawrence Binyon, writing about World War I, wrote; "At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them."

Very heartfelt and beautiful, Alan. Brought more than a tear to my eye. I'm glad it's being so well received.

Bravo Alan, you are a very gifted poet! =d>

It's nice to see that you have focused on the heroes, not the negativity about the whole event. You deserve to have this poem in the places that you had mentioned, and even more in my opinion.
My thoughts and prayers are with you, and all of the citizens in the USA.

Good job Alan. I had a couple of friends that were lost that day and I'm sure they would be proud that you remembered them that way. Thank-you, for them and their families.

I woke that morning to the words I will never forget. My radio alarm came on and the first thing I heard was the radio announcer screaming, 'OMG OMG! The world's gone mad! The world trade centre is under attack. Hijackers have flown planes into both buildings...' That was the moment I knew the world was never going to be the same. I thought it was the beginning of WW3. Such horrors. So much courage and sacrifice by innocent men and women. Strangers all around the world came together that fateful day and when the brave passengers of united 93 stormed their hijacked plane and ruined the hijackers plans, they showed the world that nobody can destroy our courage with threats of terrorism. So brave of them.

Thanks everyone...I Googled it again to see where it was used today in dedication ceremonies...let's just say that my poem was read around the world today...

A couple of ceremonies I thought were more touching...

At Martin Luther King STEAM Magnet School in Benton Harbor, Michigan sixth graders Trevor Clark and Mariama Murray read my poem at their 9-11 Memorial Ceremony...

And this one touched me because it was rather local...I lived in Washington Township, New Jersey for about six months...heck, they could have invited me to read it...but, my poem was used to close the 9-11 Memorial Service for the Township of Washington...

Here's a couple new ones that were brought to my attention...

My poem is part of a photographic display of 9-11 at The Municipal Building in West Windsor, NJ...

Actually, here's a better link on the West Windsor exhibit which runs until Sept. 30...

Oh, here we go...check out the pictures of fifth graders reading my poem in PA...

Picture number 10, I think...

And btw...just want to mention that this poem made it into some church bulletins...here's one...
http://www.fbcthomaston.org/connections/Connections%202011/Sept%2011/Connections.inside%209.11.pdf

And here's another...Emmanuel Reformed Church in Wisconsin...
http://www.ercwaupun.org/september%2011,%202011%20bulletin.pdf

You know, I've been trying to get my poems into church bulletins for a while now with no luck...last year I sent in "Incest Is Best" and "Bang You Hard"...I thought for sure one of the more so-called "reformed" churches would have went for it, but not so...

Not sure what's so different about this poem...oh well...

The Pennsylvania State Police in Harrisburg, which is the capital of PA btw, now have my 9/11 poem permanently up on their site...and while it's always flattering to see it used, it seems a bit extra so when used by police, fire, military, and other service people...and especially those in this Tri-State area, which suffered so hard at that time. In the words of Nicole Herb, Recording Secretary, and Grievance Chairman for the lodge..."I feel it is important to have it up all year. It touches everyone who reads it. Thank you."...no, thank you...it's more of an honor to me than you can imagine...
