Spotted this article and thought it appropriate here: Hygiene may be the least vain justification for ripping hairs off of your mons pubis, but it's not doctor recommended. Since getting Brazilian bikini waxes, which remove the entire patch of pubic hair from ones vagina, is an unnatural thing to do, women cite various reasons for the painful and expensive practice, as Ashley Fetters explains in her lengthy piece on the phenomenon over at The Atlantic. 60 percent of American women between 18 and 24 are sometimes or always completely bare down there not just because it's sexy, or the porn stars made it cool, or cultural non-acceptance of body hair, but because it's cleaner. "I work out a lot. I get sweaty," regular waxer Sophia Pinto told Fetters. "And it starts to smell when you've got hair down there. So yeah, it hurts, but I just feel so much cleaner." But is it really cleaner?

There's a difference between odor and cleanliness. Pinto and the like are referring to the at times unpleasant aroma of ones nether regions. But a smelly vagina doesn't mean a dirty vagina. In fact, The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists say that a clean vagina will have a mild stench, which is a why they do not recommend douching.

As for hygiene, Dr. Emily Gibson argues over at the medical blog KevinMD that this type of hair removal opens up female genitalia to all sorts of nasty sounding infections.

Pubic hair removal naturally irritates and inflames the hair follicles left behind, leaving microscopic open wounds. Rather than suffering a comparison to a bristle brush, frequent hair removal is necessary to stay smooth, causing regular irritation of the shaved or waxed area. When that irritation is combined with the warm moist environment of the genitals, it becomes a happy culture media for some of the nastiest of bacterial pathogens, namely group A streptococcus, staphylococcus aureus and its recently mutated cousin methicillin resistant staph aureus (MRSA). There is an increase in staph boils and abscesses, necessitating incisions to drain the infection, resulting in scarring that can be significant. It is not at all unusual to find pustules and other hair follicle inflammation papules on shaved genitals.

Not to mention, greater vulnerability to herpes and other STIs, cellulitis, and abrasions -- all just from waxing. There can also be more extreme complications. One diabetic woman went to the hospital with herpes and a bacterial infection after a Brazilian, leading researchers to believe that women with weak immune systems open the body up to greater chance of infection after a wax.

Scientists don't actually know why humans have hair down there in the first place, according to Fetters. "Some think it's to help trap pheromones, which connects us subconsciously to people we're attracted to; others, meanwhile, think it's simply there to keep our precious cargo warm enough for successful reproduction," she writes. But it's clearly not like the spleen: We need it.

Hmm... somehow I wouldn't think to put the words "mild" and "stench" next to each other.

Pretty much everything we do is 'unnatural' and moderately bad for our health... from waxing, tattoo'ing, smoking, drinking etc. It's all down to personal choice and level of risk we're willing to take on.

If you go to a proper, reputable salon, I don't think there is much to worry about in terms of infection or bacterial doom and gloom. You run similar risks going to a crappy nail salon or unclean 'spa'.

And I have never heard of the ridiculous theory that a full bush helps prevent herpes and STIs. If anything, hair helps to slough off and retain shedding viral cells from a herpes-infected partner. Other STIs are because of an internal body fluid exchange, so I don't know what outer hair is doing for prevention there either.

As much as some people want the full-bush to become trendy again because it's zero maintenance... I really don't think it's ever going to be coming back in style... unless maybe as a specialty fetish.

I think Dr. Emily Gibson is full of shit! She just wants to get paid to write some magazine articles. Maybe her man dumped her bushy dense jungle thicket for a smoothie and she's really pissed off! And now she's out to get all you smoothies.

Dr. Buz encourages you to stay smooth or maybe a cute little landing strip, just barely enough to tickle the nose!

I have been smooth for quite awhile and had no problems at all.

Yeah.. I guess I'd rather have fun with a fresh smelling shaved "dirtier" vagina than a "clean" one with a stench. What the fuck...

Even in the summer when I shave very close for thong bikini's I leave a little hair because my lover prefers it.

I'm a little disheartened that all the thoughts on a natural thatch are negative in this particular forum. I'm also disappointed by the need to defend a social norm and make it like the educated woman who has put forward arguments in the article to the contrary, is a 'weird' ignoramous. I'm fine with doing what you do, whatever suits, but I definitely think social conditioning has a lot to answer for in this particular debate.

There's always some risk to even minor cosmetic procedures. A "buyer beware" attitude toward most salon services is healthy IMO.

As most of you know I am a nudist. Seen shaved, el natural, trimmed, etc. Since starting to grow pubic hair I started to shave it (not all). My mom was shaved and asked her about it. As a child, I thought the semi-shaved/trimmed look was pretty.... As I got older, I learned what sexy means.. and sexy it is! I still shave to a thin short landing strip and never had any medical problems.

Keep in mind, most articles written in a negitive way regarding shaving or trimming pubic hair, have NO scientific data and are only opinions based on unconfirmed theories. No one has ever cited case studies or provided documentation. Is the article true, well, all issues mentioned are possiblilities, but notice there are no probabilities mentioned. The bases for the opinions/theories are collected from "the norm" of "what ifs" as in what if the razor is not sterile, wrong type lotion, not letting the shaved area air dry, etc...

So, do what you are comfortable, cleaniness is best, use new razors all the time... Waxing well, thats up to you.. I don't wax because there is a higher chance of irritation and infection of the pores. <--- That is proven.

I think the "doctors" and "experts" are promoting some b.s. for some reason other than "health", just like many do with medical marijuana, stem cell work, etc.

I would offer that we follow this woman's suggestion and promote positive body awareness by posting more crotch shots on our profiles!

As for stench...I myself enjoy a bit of the musky (not musty) scents.

A hardwood floor with a runner of manicured carpeting at her foyer, for instance.

The ancient Egyptians shaved their entire body. It prevented body lice and they thought it promoted cleanliness. They lasted for awhile I guess.

I'd rather go down on a smoothie or a tiny neat trimmer, than to have to put on a pith helmet and safari gear just to perform cunnilingus.
No jungle bush rain forests for me. Talk about healthy, what critters might be hiding out in one of those thickets?
