Quote:
A PETA campaign promoting veganism has sparked online outrage after viewers said it "promoted abuse".

The new Internet advert that was released on Tuesday shows a young woman in a neckbrace – purported to be the result of a rigourous sex session with her now vegan and virile boyfriend.

An accompanying website - BWVAKTBOOM.com ("Boyfriend Went Vegan and Knocked the Bottom Out of Me") was also launched with the advert and has been copping it since.

The commercial opens with "Jessica", a bruised woman who is stumbling home with a grocery bag in her hand, dressed only in a shirt over her underwear.
The narrator explains that Jessica is suffering from BWVAKTBOOM: "Boyfriend Went Vegan and Knocked the Bottom out of Me - a painful condition that occurs when boyfriends go Vegan and can suddenly bring it like a tantric porn star."

She manages to make her way up the stairs into the bedroom where her shirtless, spectacled boyfriend is mending a hole in wall.

She then throws a bag of celery to him with a half- mischievous, half-painful smile and he asks, "You’re back, what you're feeling better?"

Women's rights groups and viewers have been quick to pan the advert, calling it a campaign that glorifies abuse against women.

Full story and video here.

While I applaud PETA's moralistic efforts, I have to say the ad is rather distasteful. I thought it was an ad for a domestic violence helpline or something, until near the end.

If I were a censor, I'd have a hard time passing that one.

You have to agree, it's designed to get people discussing it, which is the main aim of course, so hats off to them for achieving that goal.

What do you guys think?

Well, if it were a Lush Story I'd bounce it for, 'knocked the bottom out of me.'

(And anyway, EVERYONE knows that vegans are crap shags.)

I think it's both fine, and funny as hell. You know it's not a serious advert as soon as the narrator comes out with the "knocked the bottom out of me" line. And if that weren't enough, check out the sly smile she gives him at the end. It's obvious that she really is ready for more.

People need to lighten up.

Well - it does get the controversy going, you're right. It's an ad that's getting noticed.

I think the concept is playful and has a lot of potential, but the ad itself is 'meh'. The neck brace was a bad move. They should have had the girl sitting on a giant bag of ice with a dizzy yet satisfied expression and wild, messy bird's nest hair common to morning-after carnage while he makes her some kind of vegan-breakfast and suggests another round while waiting for the toast to pop. Then again, that image probably wouldn't generate as much attention as the one they used.

I think they crossed the line. It actually makes me angry at PETA.

As noted, I think PETA is bullshit. Sorry. I teach my kid to respect all animals, but never bullshit, no matter what spin sell approach some take. There are many facets to this argument, and Bullshit, speaks volumes.

Now who's coming over this weekend for BBQ ribs and chicken?

I think wether the ad should air or not - the ojective was acomplished. We are debating PETA, giving it attention and the cause. All this ad had to do is air once for it to make enough noise that now, PETA is being discussed and the issues brought forth. -- Mission accomplished.

I thought it was funny.

Let me ask you this - what would you females and males think of the roles were inverted?! If the guy was coming home with the GWVAKTBOOM?

I agree with Alpha Blonde. The neck brace was a bad move. I think the wording of "a painful condition" with the neck brace made it worse. If the neck brace wasn't used, the comment "painful condition" would have come off as different than with the neck brace. It wouldn't make one think violence ... Just my thoughts.

I think its kind of funny actually, but I agree the neck brace was a bad move.

I wonder if PETA would make a big deal if the National Livestock and Meat Board, the group that had the '" Beef, It's What's For Dinner" Ads did a similiar one except you see the girl with a neck brace and her BF eating steak and it was BWCAKTBOOM: "Boyfriend Went Carniverous and Knocked the Bottom out of Me" ,LOL!
