http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/38-5-million-lotto-winner-cheated-co-workers-232140371.html

Americo Lopez was sued by 5 coworkers after he won the jackpot of a lottery. He claimed he won on a separate ticket that he bought personally. The court disagreed and Mr. Lopez lost his case and was made to pay his 5 coworkers $2million dollars each of his $24million post-tax money. After taxes they will have approximately $1.2million dollars a piece. So, they all went in equally for lottery tickets and the breakdown is...

Americo Lopez = $14million after tax

Each other individual = $1.2 million after tax

I don't understand. Either they went into the deal equally or they didn't. If the did, then the $24million post tax money should have been split evenly between all 6 winners. $4million each. How did they fuck up that simple bit of math?

Maybe there was enough doubt in the judges mind to give him the majority since he bought the ticket himself.

The judicial system is influenced by the political system?

Group lotto is a bad idea. It is akin to a "friendly" game of poker. And, as my attorney friends will quickly say, "A contract merely forms the basis for litigation."

In BC (Canada) and I believe it is the same across the country, there is a "Group Buying Agreement" form that is usually used (quoted below).

Sounds to me that .... the judge put the onus on the non-buying members to have ensured that they KNEW for sure that the ticket was partially theirs or not. By providing them with some type of settlement, it sounds like the judge gave them the benefit of the doubt that they were included, but because they couldn't prove it ... well .... makes sense to me that their share was that much less.

There are plenty of scumbags out there that will do what they can when an opportunity presents itself to be dishonest.

Lesson .... know your partner - in any endeavour relating to money. (including Pre-Nups, Post-Nups, Joint Ventures of any kind .... otherwise, you are giving a lawyer the opportunity to buy a new boat with your retainer!)

Record who is participating in each draw
When group members participate in a draw, it is always a good idea to have a written understanding of which group members have contributed to the ticket purchases. Use the Group Buying Agreement below.

Group Buying Agreement
With Group Play, it's important to have proper documentation that identifies who is participating. The Group Buying Agreement (GBA) is available free of charge and helps coordinate who is taking part.

If the group membership does not change from draw to draw, one GBA can be completed and kept on file for future draws until a change within the group happens.
If group membership changes for each draw, a separate listing should be done per draw to identify the active participants.

Appoint someone as the group's trustee.
This group trustee or administrator can coordinate collecting funds, buying tickets, tracking any winnings, posting draw results, and perhaps one day, sharing the exciting news of your lottery win and distributing any winnings! When purchasing a ticket at retail, the trustee should print his or her name on the front or back, along with the words “In Trust”. This indicates the ticket belongs to a group.

Don’t write your company name on your ticket
Even if the group is organized through your workplace, don't write your company name on the ticket, as this could imply the company has a stake in the prize.

Use legal names
For large prizes, the name on the ticket must be matched to the claimant’s identification. Putting personal or group nicknames on the ticket (i.e. “Lucky Lottery Group”) could create delays in a prize claim.

All group members must be at least 18 years old
It is the policy of WCLC not to sell its products to, or cash prizes for, any person under 18.

Photocopy selections for participants
You can provide each member with a photocopy of the group's Selections prior to the draw so each player can track the group's winnings if they wish. If that's not possible, the group Selections should be posted.
Remember, to strike out the barcode on the copies, or fold the ticket before copying so the barcode doesn’t appear. Only an original lottery ticket can be used to claim a prize, and photocopied tickets are not to be checked on lottery terminals.

Understand what happens if a participant does not contribute for a given draw
Be sure there is a clear understanding among the group of what happens when a semi-regular or regular group member is away and does not contribute into a draw. Be sure this understanding is communicated to all possible participants. .

who knows, maybe the info you got was wrong. the media doesn't always get everything 100% correct. Or maybe there was something else.
