Men Prefer Pink Female Genitals to Red, Study Finds
By Stephanie Pappas | LiveScience.com

Red lips, red hearts, red negligees — there's no doubt that red is a seductive color. A common explanation for the sexiness of red suggests that men are attracted to the color because it reminds them of genital arousal, much as the red swellings on female baboons' bottoms signal receptivity to male baboons.

But this folk theory doesn't hold up to the harsh light of science, a new study finds. In fact, men are more attracted to pink genitals than red.

"It's too simplistic to basically say, 'Oh well, our closest primate relatives have these genital swellings and therefore men are reacting to red coloring,'" said study researcher Sarah Johns, anthropologist at the University of Kent. Instead, the appeal of red must lie elsewhere, Johns told LiveScience.

Seductive Red
If red clothing or lipstick acts as a proxy for genitals, it stands to reason that men would prefer redder vulvas on women, Johns said. But no one had ever tested whether they actually do. So she and her colleagues decided to find out. [5 Myths About Women's Bodies]

The researchers first needed some similar, non-pornographic pictures of female genitals, a task that was "quite difficult," Johns said. Finally, they found a website set up so that women could anonymously submit photographs of their vulvas as part of a project meant to educate women on the diversity of genitals and improve self-esteem. The researchers picked four similarly angled photos and retouched each of them into pale pink, light pink, dark pink and red.
"We were really careful to make sure that the re-coloring looked natural," Johns said.

Ranking Red
The researchers then asked 40 heterosexual men to look at all 16 images in random order and rank them on a 0-to-100 scale of attractiveness. The results showed that instead of preferring red, the men actually showed the least preference for red vulvas.

"It basically showed that there was no different between the three pinkish shades, but the reddish shade was ranked significantly less attractive," Johns said. She and her colleagues published their research April 6 in the journal PLoS ONE.
The red used wasn't bright enough to mimic a sexually transmitted infection, Johns said, but it's possible the shade still brought to mind inflammation. Still, the fact remains that red has been shown to be an eye-catching, "dominant" shade, especially in competitive situations. Why remains an open question, Johns said.
"Certainly the effect of red is there, but taking this kind of sexual signal out of the equation means we actually can explore why this is the case," she said.

Not surprising. Who the hell has a red pussy?

I'd think a guy seeing a red vulva would think rash, herpes, STD or some other unfortunate vaginal issue.

It can be cute if a girl is wearing like a matching pink bra and panties sorta thing, but any colour can be seductive depending how the wearers wear it

Of course men like pink privates, silly scientists! That's where the phrase "one in the pink..." came from, surely? Red, however, on clothing is very super sexy, to me anyway - matching red underwear and luscious red lips for example is just guaranteed to make me putty. So yeah I'll have red underwear and lips and pink pussy, thank you.

Red pussy lips? What the hell? Never seen any of those myself. I have seen various shades of pink.

Why do women love for guys to wear pink shirts? My wife is always trying to get me into a pink shirt & when I do finally wear one she goes nuts over it, all feely and touchy and so are all of our women friends. I would not have any pink in my wardrobe except my wife gets me pink shirts & ties. I wear a pink dress shirt or tie to work and all the women comment on how good it looks. In fact they usually have to touch the shirt or tie. So what's the deal there?

It's the same effect as a hot, masculine guy holding a cute little puppy or a newborn baby. It's the contrast of tough and sweet that triggers something in us girls. Hard to explain, but it definitely works. And it's just kind of unexpected and refreshing, so it gets our attention in a sea of boring blue, white and striped shirts.

I love a touch of pink on a strong, masculine guy that can pull that colour off and look good.

Just to point out, not all girls like pink on a guy... this one doesnt. I especially find irritating the guys who wear pink just to show how 'secure with their masculinity' they are... yea right.

I thought I was the only one! Above the fact that pink has now begun to be seen as a weird ass display of masculinity I just don't find it a nice colour on guys....or even really on me, for that matter, I tend not to go beyond wearing clothes that have a little bit of pink on them. To me it's a bit like yellow....few people can truly pull it off and look good doing it.

Alas, I can't pull off yellow either

I hit my best putt ever - 35 feet uphill on a water-soaked green with the ball sending up a rooster tail of water droplets, straight into the hole - while I was wearing a pink shirt and white pants. And I wasn't at all making a statement about my masculinity. It was a cool shirt to wear on a hot, muggy day. And after the girl o' the day stripped it off me and rocked my world later on that afternoon...

It became my Lucky Shirt.

That said... Red is the color of hunger, because it's the color of fresh meat before it hits the fire. It's the color of victory because it's the color of hot blood pumping out of a vanquished foe's artery. It's the prehistoric, primal color of success. All the psychological studies in the world can't change hundreds of centuries of genetic programming...

I have a "nice" oxford cloth dress shirt that is a "very pale pink"...so pale that I've had trouble a time or two distinguishing it from white until its in a bright enough light. I really love the shirt but its getting too "small".

I'm finding now that with aging...hair almost totally white, but still "thick"...that pastel color shirts just don't seem like the right color. I now feel the best dressed in black slacks and white shirt.

DOLL....as usual, I like your replies!!

Pink! NOT ON MY GUY THANK YOU!
It's infuriating to me to see men in pink. Its not showing how masculine you think you are, it's daft.
I hate it.

Yep... still hate it.

I absolutely will not wear yellow, except for a pale yellow. Any other yellow may resemble Georgia Tech colors and I will not do that. I also will not wear orange. No orange at all. Orange is Florida, Auburn, Tennessee & Clemson colors. All those universities are arch rivals to my UGA and no way in hell will I wear those colors.

Buz, I can guess that your closet is full of red & black for your Dawgies but I have some purple & yellow you could wear to remind you of the LSU Tigers!

Hehe yea, British people are far too apathetic to have extreme university rivalries. Oh, i guess apart from football, but football and football loving people dont really feature in my life.

Geeze, I love this site

I saw this thread and decided to weigh in about how I basically hate people telling me 'real men wear pink' but was super pleased to read the vulva discussion - by the way I agree with the new survey - pink is going to attract me more that a raw red colour.

Anyway, then I saw the hijacking and just broke out laughing. Good going guys.

I will share one tale with you that involved my wife erroneously thinking it was a good idea to buy me an over priced pink polo shirt for my business casual work ensemble. I thanked her profusely for her generosity, told her how useful it would be and promptly used it to wash the car. Who would have thought my wife could get so obscenely animated!!

Pale yellow looks great on men, but you're right about any other color yellow. Yuck.

Hey! University of Virginia
colors....orange and navy (and I know they aren't threats to anyone, really) .

C'mon...come back to the orange. ;)

On a side note, pink is a great color on some guys. Maybe it's the prep in me. But seeing Uni boys in madras shorts (or white and blue seersucker) and light pink Izods is so sweet. Yum. Luckily, both hubby and his adult sons are quite preppy, because it's heavenly on them.

I love pink on a man! But it all depends on the guy. I loved it when my ex dressed up in pink, but then again he was over six feet tall and buff, so the muscular masculinity was always there.

I remember reading that before the '50s, pink was considered a man's color because it inspired vigor and confidence while blue was considered a female's color (dainty). Interesting change over the past 50-60 years.

I'm turned on by any man that has the balls to pull off pink. It's extremely sexy!
