As an author, I've sent messages to people asking them...

what exactly they liked about my story. I happened to notice a few pages where a person added one of my tales to their favorites list. Since sending them correspondence, I haven't received anything in response sad

Are some readers afraid to give feedback or is asking for it a frowned upon practice here?

Personally, if I wanted to spend some time to give my comments on a story I would leave a comment on the story itself... I tend to ignore all messages related to stories unless it's a 'thank you for the vote' type of message from a close friend.

This would have been better off in the Ask The Readers section though I should think..

People will give you feedback if they so desire...asking for it sort of puts them in a spot, like what if they don't like your story kinda thing...

I've learned, from my own experiences as well as others, on Lush and elsewhere, that you should appreciate whatever feedback you get...and hopefully take away something from it...

But, if you go asking for unsolicited feedback...you're looking for trouble...just sayin'

People come on here to read...some leave feedback...some don't. I guess maybe they don't feel comfortable talking about your story. Don't take it personally.

I will score and comment on stories as I want or time allows. If an author sent me a note asking me why I liked their story, I would probably ignore it as well because I would feel like they were giving me homework to do. Oh great, I just got assigned a book report to do. It would bug me.

Also, I have a few friends who've mentioned that they won't score/comment stories on specific genres (i.e., incest, crossdressing) because they don't want people to see what their preferences are. Just another thought.

Like everyone else said, appreciate the feedback that you do get! smile Good luck!

I try to keep my comments short in the space given. If I get a "thank you" for commenting, I ALWAYS reply. Usually, I'll extend my comments further. If there was something I didnt like, Id much prefer to say in private. Some people dont have time, others do, others might not have been back online since you sent your thanks. Take it with a grain of salt. People are sometimes busy, others have had their say and dont feel it necessary to comment further.

There are those of us who by contributing to this site are looking to improve upon our work. Without comments, this exercise is futile. I'm sure it's a two way street. No input by the readers means that less and less of us will write what you want to read because we won't know.

Again, my above comment seems relevant.

I've been curious enough to ask the occasional reader what particularly they liked about a story they had listed as their favorite. I'm just surprised that a question, posed privately and without text abbreviations, can't be given a simple one sentence response.

I guess that we will have to be satisfied with not knowing how to please the reading populous. It comes with the territory. :)

You know, and first off I want to make clear that I happen to think Lush is the nicest story site I've seen...

But, you know, and I think we're all adults here...you come here, you hang out in the forum, you make friends here, and then you ask people what they think of your story?

Ain't that kinda like asking your mother if she thinks you're good looking?

My mum says I'm really pretty when I wear my hair down (but only then).

I am the flip side of asking for detailed stuff, unless I know the person pretty well, in which case I have a bit more confidence to ask (and get a truthful answer).

My downfall is that people take the time to comment, and I am terrible for writing to them and thanking them for taking the time, even if I didn't like what they said. I get in such a pickle about who I have and haven't written to, and I don't want to seem like I'm pushing, or something. I need to work out a system for that (thanking, I mean, not pushing).

Perhaps, if people wanted, they could start a thread advertising for somebody/more than one who would specifically read a single story (more and people would shy away) to critique them? I wouldn't be brave enough for that, but I'm sure others are. It could be done via PM, but if people are very serious about wanting feedback for improvement, I would say that could be the way forward for some braver souls than I. Over on the blue site, I believe there is a hidden forum for just that purpose, if one signs up for the focus of it, but there's nothing to stop people here advertising for that specific task, surely? I guess it all comes down to how brave you are, and how anxious you are to sift through the comments of those who might take up the request. Just a thought.

I agree. If I wanted to give feedback on a story I would leave a comment or message you myself.

George Bernard Shaw made some very insulting remarks about the writing of William Shakspeare. The lesson I take from that is that no matter how good you may be, there will always be someone who will not enjoy it.

I put my work out there and have been fairly fortunate that most readers seem to enjoy it. If they wish to comment I will often send a thank you. If they don't that's up to them. I have come to accept that my writing is often technically flawed so I'm thankful that there are those who are capable of overlooking it.

Well it is sometimes hard to explain why you liked a particular story. I mean finding the right words to express how you felt and what particularly drew you in. That may be why some people keep their comments short and can't really expand it further.

As a beginning writer, I know how it is to be self-conscious. And how it is to have over a thousand story views but maybe 6 or 7 comments...or none at all. I also notice that while people follow me as an author, they don't comment on my stories. However, if they've taken the time to favorite what you write, give them credit for that. Take that as positive enough feedback. And heed the comments that you do get, and keep writing the way you do. It'll evolve as your imagination evolves. Just give it time. I mean, I've never seen J.K. Rowling walking down the street with a suggestion box. Your writing shouldn't cater to what people do or don't like. Trust yourself enough as a writer to do what pleases you, and that's what people will appreciate/respect. Sometimes people have no clue what they want in a book until they read it and enjoy it. Especially in the case of erotica because there's so much that can be explored in our natures simply by reading in detail something that we otherwise wouldn't find particularly appealing. But I digress...

The point is, people shouldn't have to be hounded just because you wanna know why they liked your story. The more you write, the more they'll reveal why. How/what you write shouldn't depend on how people feel about it.

Please quit sending couched spam messages to read your drivel.

Calling those messages - invitations, does little to dress them up, imo. When Stephen King releases a new work upon the world, I don't receive a junk email notice to inform me of his efforts.

Yes, you know I am referring to you.

When someone sends me a message like this, I don't read it and delete it.

I NEVER send out a message saying "hey, I've written ... please read .... why did you not post a comment but I saw you scored it .... etc etc"

I RARELY send out thank you messages to people for scoring/commenting my work. If someone has PM'd me a comment about a story I will reply to that directly.

I don't even respond to RSVPs! People who know me and those who do not, are lucky to even have me swirling in their presence, I figure.

You and I should tear up the town some night, sister! Bring lots of cash, we might need it for bail!

Let me say I'm not an author but I felt the need to respond to this thread.
When I read a story I try very hard to score it. I do not always feel like leaving a note saying it was great or I thought it sucked. Some stories I really enjoy and will comment. If I get a notice that one of my friends has posted a story I will read those as i find the time. What I don't like is random people asking me to read their stories and commenting. It is nice to receive a thank you by mail for whatever I might have said about a story. What drives me nuts is when I score something and the author demands a comment. I don't always like commenting.
I read for personal pleasure and greatly enjoy a varity of subject. If a story is well told and I feel like it could be a reality or it makes me feel like I'm part of the action I will score high. I never judge on grammar or spelling I suck at both.
