I tried to publish a story and it was rejected due to "bad dialogue structure". Silly me, I thought I was writing an erotic story and not a paper for English class. Nevertheless, I have looked over my piece and cannot find the offending sentence structure. Maybe someone can read it over for me a second time and help bail me out of grammar jail.

Thanks in advance!

Can you spot the errors here?

I too got rid of my clothes too

I did not process your story, but authors are always free to message the verifier who processed their story if they're not happy with the outcome. Calling them the grammar police isn't exactly . .. progressive. ..

Yes, the errors in that quote were fairly easy to spot. More difficult is punctuation in dialogue. Every editor seems to have different standards in that regard.

Actually they don't, I took a peek and your main issue was inconsistency, if you want, I can pm you an example, I doubt that you want all your errors publically pointed out.

I would appreciate that. Thank you for your help.

No problem. Check your inbox.

However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't still try to get someone to help you with editing it if that's a problem for you.

A lot of people struggle with formatting and punctuation of dialogue. The above link will take you to a primer on the subject that will answer all of your questions and provide examples of how to do this correctly.

This is the form that we want to see in all stories on Lush.

This is an excellent guide by the way.
Helped me considerably the first time. Well worth a read.

This has been mentioned many times by many authors. However, the reality is that English is not just for the classroom. Its function is to enable us to communicate better. By utilizing correct grammar and punctuation, you enable the reader to enjoy your story without distractions. This provides a better experience. Think of it this way: If you are going to have a hot steamy session with the object of your desire, would it be better when you can focus on your lover? Or, would you prefer to have screaming children, barking dogs, and sirens in the background? Which is more satisfactory?

I thought Grammar Police was cute Sweetaboo. Your errors were pretty obvious but I can understand being in the moment too. I am glad I am not a wriiter or a comedian.

Writing for Lush is a great way of exercising the skills you were taught in English class. I'm sure Mr Holleran would be delighted if he knew what I was doing with his teachings smile

Grammar jail is great: as one of the guards, I have to say that the pay is lousy (there is none) but the uniforms are cute.

The mods are in the same accord and we are just volunteer members serving the Lush community. Our goal is to keep a certain standard of quality. That makes this site much easier to enjoy and read for everyone.

If you want to call me the grammar police, please get me a cool uniform (SWAT style) and some handcuffs. Handcuffs can be fun!

A cool uniform does not include any of those silly looking French police hats!

+1 billion. I agree with this completely. Whenever people complain about how other people take grammar too seriously, all I hear is, "I suck at grammar and can't be bothered to educate myself." It's like talking to someone and hearing them say, "So I got arrested by the traffic police just because I blew through a red light and ran over a nun. Geez, some people..." The rules are pretty simple, it's easy to find someone to help out, and your reader will have a much better experience if you write properly. It's incredibly jarring when someone breaks the rules, and it ruins my immersion in a story.

My first effort was rejected several times, but I did get referred to the guide mentioned. As a result my next effort was published after just one edit, so I must have learned something from reading the guide.
Part of my problem is that I speak and write English english, not the same english as these colonials speak and write, but I try to make allowances for them. lol, just joking guys.

I'm glad you added that last sentence. A good number of the Story Moderators are British and we allow for both American English and British English. We certainly don't accept it as an excuse for sub-standard writing.

To me the argument that it is only a sex story makes no sense. The story mods are not enforcing standards worthy of graduate school in English. If we were, the content of the stories would be judged as well, which is not the case other than for its compliance with site guidelines.

The expectation is that stories be written with correct spelling and grammar and with appropriate punctuation. All of this is taught in most English-speaking countries in middle school and/or high school. It is the same in writing a business letter in your job or a written presentation for your colleagues. It is not optional, but rather the accepted norm of written English. This is not an elitist standard that Lush imposes on writers.

If your story is rejected, you will be given a list of resources to read and notes from the story moderator about corrections that are necessary. Read the notes and the linked resources carefully and you should be able to edit your story. If you have questions, ask them in a PM to the moderator who read your story. They will usually assist you. Aggressive denial of the necessity of being literate is not helpful. You show respect for the site, your stories and your readers by doing things correctly.

Well, I agree the, the editors here are power hungry, and they refuse to post certain stories because of PERSONAL standards. I have written some from various times in my life and the grammar and punctuation was done for a specific effect. If they don't get it too bad, I post elsewhere and trust me I have gotten good reviews. And by teachers and professors, so I figure it is their loss. They will never censor me and I just refuse to edit certain pieces. They have the right to reject, I have the right to keep as is and post elsewhere. To me it is the reader that loses!!!!!

The verifiers here take time out of their lives (most of us from busy schedules) to verify the stories which would have sat in the queue for weeks on end otherwise. We try to help authors make their stories better so that they can be proud of their work. Not taking that extra time to edit a piece or proofread it, shows a gross disrespect for anyone who reads your work.

I've dealt with you on several stories and you never said that any of your numerous mistakes were for specific effect. Most verifiers let authors know that they can be messaged if the author needs further clarification. Purposely using bad grammar and then not explaining that there's a reason behind it makes absolutely no sense to me.

If you refuse to edit your work, then that's your choice, there are numerous authors who work hard at their stories and do their best to make them better and are glad when errors are pointed out so that they can be fixed and their story can be improved.

If you feel that someone is rejecting your story on a personal standard, you are more than welcome to report them. I doubt many readers feel that they've suffered a loss from not reading your unedited pieces.

We work hard to help keep the site at a certain standard and most of us don't care that we rarely get a thank you or acknowledgement from authors after extensively editing to help them make their work better, but rude posts like this one are uncalled for.

I can only speak for me but poor sentence structure ruins the mood or any story for me.

Aside from the title you have the right idea. It's always a good idea to have a 2nd set of eyes looking at a story before it gets published in any form

I have had several of my stories rejected, but have never taken it as anything other than a sign that I still have more to learn. I work really hard at editing my story, and it's very true what one winged angel says about how rewarding it feels, when you have fixed all the errors.

I enjoyed telling stories, but my writing skills didn't match up, I was embarrassed about my terrible spelling and grammar. I decided that I couldn't let this stop me, and am so thankful if anyone points an error for me. Thanks to my wonderful lush friends my confidence, and hopefully skills are growing.

While I'll be the first to thank the verifiers here for the outstanding work they do, I can understand where some are coming from.

First of all, I believe the OP made a great statement by titling it "Help... I've been arrested by the grammar police"
It was witty and funny and in no way, shape or form disrespectful. It grabbed your attention and she got the help she was asking for.

After that was taken care of, it went straight to hell.
I take offence when people assume everyone has received an education. Not everyone has, and when its so pointedly blared out in the forums it reminds me of my many failings in life. My lack of education being a BIG part of my failings.

I have no confidence in my spelling, sentence structure and grammar. I constantly second guess myself while editing my work. I also get no feedback if I ask. Nor do I want to hound people about it with my many questions.

This is not high school. And yes, I probably should've learned it all there... but I didn't. I am learning it here.

So please quit being so ignorant and rude when someone writes something and the Grammar Nazi's feel the need to descend on the typos, poorly written sentences or misused punctuation and rip it to shreds.
Not everyone had the same chance as you, the grammar nazi, to receive a proper education.
(I am not directing this at any of the verifiers I've dealt with by the way - I have received nothing but a great deal of help from any that I have worked with)

Let the butthurt continue.

Exactly. I meant no disrespect to the editors whatsoever. It truly was an attempt to get some help with my story, and I ended up getting the help I needed. The corrections were made and the story has been published. I can't thank one_winged_angel and naughtynurse enough for their assistance.

So there is no need to turn this into a shouting match. All is good.

For what it's worth, I have read some really bad stories with good grammar. Given the choice between a story that has every "I" dotted, every "T" crossed, every word spelled, every use of punctuation perfect, but also has every tired porn cliche, has bad characters, unbelievable situations, and bad dialogue and a story that is well thought out, well conceived, has believable situations and characters and good imaginative sex description, but also has a few misspelled words, misused punctuation, and a few typos, I would rather read the latter.
