10. Eddie Van Halen
9. Keith Richards (Rolling Stones)
8. Jeff Beck (Yardbirds)
7. tie: The Edge (U2) and Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath)
6. Mick Ronson (David Bowie on "Ziggy Stardust", Mott The Hoople, etc)
5. Brian Jones (Rolling Stones)
4. tie: Eric Clapton (Cream, Yardbirds, etc) and David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)

OK, what's your list?!

This is just for fun: not to be heatedly debated.

ties are cheating - you have 12 listed. i say we toss you off of lush! who's with me? *gathers pitchfork bearing mob*

And one group:
The Ventures, a group every guitar picker back in the 60's seemed to want to emulate.

Hm. Not sure I can manage 10, but here's what I got:

Steve Howe (Yes, Asia)
Dave Gilmour
Mark Knopfler
Eric Clapton
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Alex Lifeson (Rush)
George Harrison
Pete Townsend
Jimmy Page
Jeff Beck

Hey, I made it. I'll also give an honourable mention to Harry Manx. He's blues-folk-world music rather than rock so I didn't include him, but he is fantastic.

That's the thing with rock guitar (and blues guitar, one of the sources from which it evolved, for that matter). It's not all about complex melodies and chord progressions, but about making the most of something fairly simple.

There are examples of rock guitarists who are capable of more complex stuff (Steve Howe of Yes, for instance, blends jazz and classical musical ideas into his playing) but you can also be a great rock guitar player with a fairly simple, straightforward sound.

Nikki,

For real, Hetfield is one of the greatest right hands in metal (and rock). Sure he's not a pyrotechnic widdler like a lot of the folks cited here, but in terms of tight, clean downward picking, melodic creativity, speed, songwriting and understanding of assembling guitar parts in the studio environment, I must petition his inclusion.

Plus he does all that shit while singing!

And yeah, I forgot Paul Gilbert. If we're going to have a mention of Buckethead, we can't even talk about that until PG is on the roster!

8. Billy Gibbons
7. Ritchie Blackmore
6. Keith Richards
5. Alex Lifeson
4. Duane Allman
3. Steve Vai
2. Jimmy Paige
1. Jimi Hendricks

The list is purely rock out with your cock out rock.

P.S. Frank Zappa, Eric Clapton, and Jeff Beck, I consider more than rock guitarists. SRV, Jeff Healey, Bonamassa and the usual Johnson/blues god...are exactly that. Blues men. No dis, just a different, beautiful world.

Finally, a list I can get behind. I just have to swap Gibbons and Vai...and all is good in my world.
