Where do most of the writers get their ideas from?

Well, I don't have one up on here yet, it's with a proof-reader as I type this.

I also have another in process as well as a poem.

Outside the Lush world, I have several published in magazines, a few contest entries (including some 2nd and 3rd place awards) and one in a lesser-known publisher's anthology.

With that out of the way.

I watch the world around me, think of events in my own past or listen to what others are talking about. Stories abound out there, it's finding the ones that pique your interest enough to flesh them out.

Being open eyed and eared, keeping watch for even the littlest things can spark imagination and lead to a story.

Real life experiences wherever I can unless it's for a category I don't normally write about like story Competitions.

Usually a loan from the Spank Bank. But sometimes I base it on actual events.
My latest story is a racy little piece about what happens when someone cute from work invites you over to watch Netflix and Chill.

It varies. Sometimes it's inspired by my own sexual experiences or those of friends of mine. Other times it's a fantasy that evolves from intense sexting and dirty talk. And sometimes, it's a little of both. smile

The intersection of my imagination with the copious amounts of porn and erotica that I've consumed over the years. Sometimes I'll tap into things I've read and even do some research if an idea switches on a bulb. Some characters, situations, and settings draw from life (e.g. the escort in "His Secret, Her New Passion" draws on my own experiences with some "professional ladies") but what happens is pretty much all fantasy. My real sex life wouldn't make for very scintillating reading.

My ideas are usually sparked by a word or phrase that makes me laugh (my latest idea was sparked by some mushrooms growing on the lawn). Sometimes, the urge to write pounds my head, so I ask a small handful of friends what I could write a story about when I can't think of something myself. If the idea starts flowing, I write it.

Every now and again, I feel like I want to explore or try to understand why some people like certain things, so I write about that.

Most of my story ideas pop into my head while I'm in the shower. It's not as though I'm thinking about stories... it's just that the ideas seem to get washed out from wherever they've been lurking.

Sitting on the bus is another good time as there are lots of interesting characters and snippets of conversations - that's where my character, 'Amber' came from. I seem to get a lot while I'm at work. I know to carry a pad and pen at all times because some of the stuff is priceless and it'd be a shame to forget / lose it. I often start laughing to myself at something a character has said. I got some very peculiar looks when I came up with this snippet of conversation for 'Not Dead':

"I'll have you know that I'm a champion wizard," Angharath volunteered. The lead imp turned back.

"Champion?" the imp sniggered. "Champion at what? Pie eating?"

Angharath swelled with pride. "You've heard of me?"

Single lines such as this provide a framework for my stories: "Even for one comfortable in the tortured dungeon of the other place, where dragons were two-a-penny, those eyes were worrying."

You need to explain what 'the other place' is. Who is comfortable? and so on...

My ideas come from my fantasy, but are fueled by desire. Not so much for any actual activity, but from reading. Historical novels, erotica, fiction, biographies, etc. Once I get a sotry started though, the rest is strictly a work of my imagination.

i steal them from Abi and Doll - shhh! don't tell them, though!

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

I like to cast my mind back to previous encounters I've had, or one's that I would like to of had but never got the chance. Of course I spice them up a bit lol. There's nothing like remembering a sexy encounter you've had gets the creative juices flowing.

A couple examples.

I have a seven story series published at smashwords. The seventh volume is about a young woman who has impulses toward dominance and submission. Both concepts seem to excite and fascinate her. Now, I'm aware that in the BDSM world/lifestyle there are many 'switches', people who go both ways - I suppose similar to people who are bi-sexual in the realm of more conventional sexual expression. So I was wondering how one went about sorting that conflict out, and got into writing fiction about it. As odd as it may seem, the opening event in the novel was inspired by a letter I'd read years ago in the Dear Ann Landers advice column!

I have a story called Even Steven I just submitted here that will be showing up whenever it gets through the screening process. The germ of the idea for that story came from a Dear Prudence advice column. Although, the story takes the letter/dilemma to an extent far beyond the issue in the original letter writer had presented in the column.

Advice columns can be a great source of ideas either for stories or for events within stories. The columns deal with all sorts of human conflicts, problems, emotions, relationships - the sort of stuff that makes for great fiction.

I wish my stories were based on real life experiences...

My ideas have a habit of popping into my head while driving to work. Usually a character comes to mind, or maybe a brief snippet of a scene. Typically, it has to ferment for a long time before I try to write a story around it.

Most ideas come from the top of my head,or I get inspired from a show, reading a story, real life,or even playing a game.I just switch things up in my story so it does not sound like i'm copying.
